The hotel is lovely - our room was more than comfortable - the food was great and the staff efficient and friendly. The curry at their sister hotel across the road was magnificent. It is hard striking a balance these days between safety and comfort but I feel the CHH falls short. There is no point in having notices requiring guests to wear face coverings and not enforcing it. I asked the receptionist and he said they can't make people cover up. But most guests and all staff went about without coverings. It is inconvenient, I know, but the rule is there for a purpose and it can be enforced - just don't serve people who do not comply.

Came here for our anniversary, very pretty hotel in the middle of the Village. Lovely staff and the deal from secret escapes gave more than we expected. Afternoon tea was very romantic with a lovely warm fire. Definitely would visit again.

We have just returned from a most enjoyable stay at The Cotswold House Hotel. The location and ambiance of the hotel is charming and our (classic) room was spacious and comfortable. We found the breakfast menu to be first rate especially as both smoked haddock and smoked salmon were available without extra charge. Pre-ordering breakfast choices the night before was not a problem and the range and quality of ingredients was excellent. Breakfast staff were both friendly and efficient and we enjoyed 3 excellent breakfasts. We also enjoyed 3 dinners in The Bistro again with excellent service and interesting and well presented food. The menu choice is somewhat limited so 3 consecutive evenings is about the limit of how many times you would want to dine here in the evening. On the first evening there was an additional specials choice but no specials on nights 2 and 3 which was disappointing. A nice touch is the provision of beautiful Robert Welch cutlery which is locally designed in Chipping Campden and gives a real sense of local craft skill in The Cotswolds. We would advise potential visitors of 3 things to be aware of - this is an old and historic property and anybody with mobility issues would need to check their needs in advance as there is no lift so stairs have to be used; the bath in our room was deep with no separate shower and the spray head provided could not be fixed to the wall; security is a potential issue as the room door lock was just a simple Yale lock and both the rear and side hotel doors are open during the day and not locked so external people can easily access the hotel without being seen as we were not aware of any CCTV. There was no safe in our room and we would advise guests not to leave any valuables in their room. The hotel has its own car park at the rear with access from a road at the back of the hotel but it is something of a trek from the car park to the hotel as the hotel has a long garden. Overall a most enjoyable stay in a beautiful part of the world in a hotel with character doing its best to deal with Covid issues although the lack of a hand sanitiser at the rear entrance was disappointing and a deficiency.

We booked a 3 night stay to celebrate our wedding anniversary,on arrival we were shown to a beautiful suite which exceeded our expectations, after a lovely relaxing afternoon sitting in the garden adjoining our room we ate in the Bistro restaurant as the fig tree restaurant is currently closed, the service was extremely slow, the waiter did apologise, our starter of a sharing platter was delicious but the main course was mediocre.we then went back to our room to discover that a large amount of money had been taken from a walletin our room,we had our room key with us at all times and never left the hotel,we immediately went to reception to be told that the only other key was master key so therefore the finger must point directly at a staff member, the police were informed and we were given crime number.after a sleepless night we decided that we couldn’t possibly stay any longer as we didn’t know who was involved ,it proved to be a very distressing time for us both but fortunately we found another lovely hotel in the Cotswolds although our anniversary visit was totally ruined.we feel that the lack of customer care given by the hotel was beyond belief.

Response from Craig Webb, General Manager at Cotswold House Hotel & Spa
Responded 1 week ago
Dear Mr Wren Thank you for following up our correspondence with your review. Firstly let me reiterate how sorry I was to hear that you had money missing. Since your report of this we too have felt very sad that our place of work has been targetted, and we share equally the feeling of loss and invasion that this brings. I fully understand your desire to point the finger at myself and my colleagues. It would stand to reason that if I had a key to your room, then it must have been me who is the culprit. On further investigation, we found a weakness in the French doors in the room that opens up to the outside. The police investigation has come to the same conclusion, coupled with the fact that 2 houses also had break-ins on this street on the same night would also point to a mini local crime spree. It is a real shame that the in-room safe was not utlised and the cash left out on the table, we have of course rectified the weakness on the exterior door, and we have also added an extra lock to the French doors. I am sorry you felt my customer care was lacking. I was very empathetic to you, called the police immediately, followed up with you the same evening, checked on your and your wife's wellbeing, followed up again on the Monday, and continued to liaise with the police and yourself throughout. In addition, allowed you to leave without paying your £450 bill. Kind Regards Craig Webb General Manager

Dirty spa, barely warm food, bored and uncommunicative reception staff and simple essentials (ie teaspoon with coffee or seasoning on the table was missed). Really sad when people are desperate for & much looking forward to a break
