Faulty Towers springs to mind!! Room was very tired and dirty in places. Exposed gripper rods between the bedroom and bathroom which we both injured ourselves on. The restaurant staff really let the hotel down, very inefficient, no customer service, unenthusiastic, rude, untrained and one girl inpaticular was unkempt with some disgusting habits. The Spa staff seemed lazy leaving dirty towels and gowns on the loungers long after guests had left the spa. I had to ask for the hot water, tea and milk to be replenished whilst the spa receptionist sat at her desk drinking tea and on her mobile phone. I get the feeling that the staff know that they are providing a poor service as even the receptionist didn't ask how our stay was when we checked out. On a positive note the food was very nice and far better than you would expect after the diabolical service. The other staff are really letting the chefs down. Serious management intervention is needed in my honest opinion.

Bit of a disappointment to be honest. The hotel, from the front, looks very rustic and boutique however, from the inside it’s tired and a bit grim. We paid just under £300 for the night, and our room had stains above the bed, the window sill had large sections of paint missing…. The shower kept running boiling hot one minute and freezing cold the next! We fancied a cup of coffee this morning only to find the cafetière was dirty inside, so we gave that a wide berth. We had two bottles of water in our fridge, but our friends who stayed in the room next door only had 1… so when we returned from the wedding, they had to share one bottle between them. Not ideal when you have been on the drink all afternoon. When we checked out, a discretionary charge of 10% had been added to the bill, we were told we could have it removed- so we did. Don’t have an issue with paying a charge if we have been provided with a service- we weren’t paying £27 for someone to carry our bags to the room. Which was literally all they did. We left our bags at 2pm, returned at midnight… and left at 10.30am this morning. Staff were friendly, but massively overpriced and very disappointing!

Very nice place very central to Chipping Campden very good meals with great and friendly service, some feed back to the management however I paid a very high price for the pleasure of staying at your facility but do not like being charged 10% Gratuity after I had already tipped your staff handsomely prior to check out and also I would like to mention other “penny pinching” tricks such as charging your guests for a 300 ml bottle of Coke and I am served a 200 ml bottle, this may sound petty but when your guests have already paid a very high price (through the nose) for the moderate room and these tricks a tried to get that little extra from your visitors it leaves a very bad taste in one’s mouth, so although I gave you a decent rating I would not recommend you to anyone else or stay with you again, until you change these penny pinching tactics to squeeze extra money from your guests.

Response from Craig Webb, General Manager at Cotswold House Hotel & Spa

Hello Terrence Thank you for your comments. I am truly sorry it came across that way. The 'gratuity' added to the account at the end is an optional service charge and can be amended by yourself without question. We have 3 sizes of coke we serve, and if the server inadvertently charged the wrong size, I am certain that was just a mistake. I will speak to the bar staff to ensure they take more care. We encourage guests to check each bill for accuracy before paying as mistakes can happen. kindest Regards Craig Webb

So far the most surprising break. Reception good. Bart was a lovely host in the bar and the restaurant. The room was surprisingly big with an array of amenities. First night mean was ‘excuse the language’ bloody amazing. I had a tomato salad starter and duck main followed by cheese board. The quality was brilliant. The wine , one I hadn’t had since the House of Commons was deep and luxurious. I would recommend anyone wanting a break to come here.

Stayed here for the August bank holiday weekend. The location of the hotel is great. The staff is hit or miss. The breakfast crew is lovely. The rooms are in need of updating. We stayed in one of the garden suites/cottages which had seen better days. We paid a pretty penny for this room so to have old tatty furniture, peeling wood panelling in the bathroom was not really what we expected... However, the worst was yet to come. I had a dress that I left on the bed before heading out for the day, go missing. We know it was there and it seems to have just vanished. Giving the hotel the benefit of the doubt, I asked the front desk to check if the cleaning crew had taken it by mistake. However they came back saying they could not find the dress. So clearly it was taken because I am pretty sure my dress did not have wings. What actually was more disturbing was that the staff was not concerned in the least and actually shrugged it off , without so much of an acknowledgement/concern or apology. However looking at the reviews, it then came to light that there have been cases of theft in the garden rooms recently - and the hotel has been consistent in their indifference. So it is a known issue. So in the end I feel lucky that I only "lost" a dress (others have had cards stolen!). In the end, for the price, this was not where we would come back - so stay here if you want to carry all your belongings with you wherever you go.

Dear Wonderlust 73 To clarify the turn of events. The dress was left behind after your stay. Housekeeping bagged and labelled it and passed it to reception to contact you. Reception contacted you but did not get an answer. You realised your dress was missing and called the hotel, speaking to a receptionist that was not aware of the situation. We contacted you to clarify which address you would like it posted to. We posted the dress to you. We are accused of stealing your dress. Kind Regards Craig Webb

Beautiful location. Front of the hotel very grand looking. Added bonus of electric car charger which we used. Our accommodation was a cottage garden room which was OK. No frills. The bed looked huge, but when we got in it, we soon realised that it was 2 single mattresses put together, one slightly higher than the other, so not as comfortable as first impressions gave. The bathroom needs attention as the wooden bath panel was blown and there was so much black mould around the bath. There were quite a few cobwebs in the little room where the fridge is. When we arrived we had sandwiches and drinks in the bistro bar which was nice. We had dinner booked in the main restaurant. The chap who first greeted us was very friendly and attentive. We ordered cocktails and were served by a young lady who spilt them on arrival. Although she apologised she did not bring a cloth to wipe the table so we asked another staff member. We ordered steaks. My husband's was better than mine. I left over half of mine but when our plates were collected with a half eaten steak, noone asked if the meal was OK. We had breakfast the next morning which set us up for our journey home. I would not return to this hotel as there are many more of higher quality. We paid £290 for one night plus a £70 bar bill, so a little too expensive for what we received.

We had our wedding day here in June and it was a fantastic venue. The venue’s wedding co-ordinator and the rest of the staff worked so hard from the planning stage to the day itself, we really felt look after and didn’t have to worry about anything- despite it being a busy weekend for the hotel. The food for the wedding breakfast was stunning, as was the rooms in the hotel. Our guests were really impressed with their rooms too. Thank you to Mandy and the rest of the team for making our wedding day perfect.

We were staying at sister hotel across the square, but booked in here for dinner in the restaurant. The menu is the same as in the bistro, but the restaurant setting is beautiful, overlooking the gardens. We chose to eat 'tapas style', but sharing a selection of dishes from the starter menu and it made for a first-class dining experience. The food was excellent quality, well presented, and the service was very good indeed. We couldn't resist the dessert menu either and then enjoyed a couple of drinks outside on a lovely summer evening. First rate all round.

We booked the spa package through spa seekers took a while to get it all confirmed but once we were there everything was flawless. We were upgraded to a garden room which was beautiful and very clean. We used the spa and also both of us had full body massages which were lovely (however aching a lot today!) Evening meal you get £40pp which is more than enough - now here’s the weird part me and my husband ate the exact same for dinner however at 1.30am I was woken with crippling stomach pains and D&V. Had about 30 mins sleep, couldn’t face breakfast and couldn’t use the spa that we had pre booked in the morning. Obviously with things like this it’s very hard to pinpoint where you’ve picked it up from so can’t blame the hotel entirely but will be interested to see if anyone else experienced this.

Cotswold House is nestled in the heart of Chipping Campden, a beautiful Cotswold Village. On arrival, we were delighted to learn that we had been given a complimentary upgrade to one of their garden rooms, a little row of cottages in the garden at the rear of the hotel. We were shown to our lovely room, along a path flanked by English lavender. We had booked the Spa between 4.00 pm and 6.00 pm and enjoyed a couple of hours relaxing in and by the pool. Unfortunately, during those two hours our room was burgled and credit cards stolen. The perpetrators had been very tidy and the theft only came to light the following morning, when whoever had taken the cards, called the hotel and asked to be put through to our room purporting to be a family member. When the call was put through he changed identity and claimed to be calling from HSBC, then followed an elaborate and extensive story culminating in attempts to acquire personal information including PIN numbers. We reported the incident to reception who were completely disinterested. We asked for help calling the police and were given none. We informed the police ourselves and an officer attended. They are now investigating the incident. The hotel confirmed they had CCTV covering the door to the room. Attempts by the police to obtain copies have failed, as the hotel have claimed they are unable to access the footage. The hotel confirmed that this has happened before, but not in the room we were staying in. The hotel made no attempt to inform other guests staying in the garden rooms of the incident, to alert them to check their own cards. We did not see anyone from the hotel management team on the day of the incident and to date, have received no correspondence from them apologising for what we experienced. I am incredibly disappointed at the lack of concern shown by the hotel team and feel that they have not shown any professionalism in the handling of the incident. Future guests please be aware of the vulnerability of these garden rooms and do not leave any valuables unattended. There are some very clever, devious teams operating in the area. Sadly what should have been a relaxing short break, was very distressing and completely upset our trip to the Cotswolds.
