Yes it needs a bit of TLC, but it's spotless, the staff are amazing, the breakfast is lovely in a glorious dining room and as near to the station and city centre as anyone could ever want. So put away your knives and see it for what it is - a beautiful old hotel, being run to the best of...

If you want to stay in Lancaster city centre, you can stay in the new, identikit Travelodge nearby (and "enjoy" their £4.95 Breakfast Box) but for the same or a little more I prefer the faded grandeur and splendid, waiter-served "Full Lancashire Breakfast" of the Royal King's Arms. I work in Lancaster and stay here whenever I do not want...

We only stayed one night in Lancaster and did not eat in the hotel but if you want a room in the middle of a city with parking then the Royal Kings Arms is ideal. The castle was to the left of hotel entrance and the city shopping centre was to the right. The room was clean, the shower powerful...

This place felt a bit like the place that time forgot. My room was grotty; the skirting boards were crumbling, and the wall flaking by the toilet. My duvet was about as thin as I've ever experienced. Floor boards creeked. The lift was ancient. I haven't seen one like it in decades. All that said, the reception staff were very...

My very first break away with my fiance 8 years ago and have since been back a further 3 times. Great location love the big open rooms and antique style, last time we stay though was starting to look tired. Food lovely and very accomodating would recommend to anyone once tidied up. Lovely bar near by called the pub and...

Nice big hotel well priced, just needs a lot of work to bring it up to a good standard, very tired decorations, carpets. lift is from the last century... I believe that from next year the hotel is going to have a face lift. So will wait till after to return.

Stayed here one night, interesting place, would have been fabulous in its day. Had to pay at check in always a bad sign, however the rooms where OK, clean, warm, loads of hot water. Also good wifi unexpectedly. Good breakfast, staff a bit 'creepy' on reception and parking was expensive (£5) but it was secure and right in the middle...

Dear williamsn1005643, I would like to thank you for taking the time to write some feedback on the hotel. To address some points you mentioned in your review, many hotels including the big chain hoteliers charge guests before they have even arrived in the hotel, our policy is to charge on arrival and one of the reasons is to ensure...

This place would and could be amazing! We stayed on the 4th floor with a lovely old fashioned lift to help us up! The room was big and spacious, just desperate for some love, new plaster and a bit of care. Someone has tried to put a quick job on the room by painting over some wallpaper that seems to...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
We always offer the best prices to our guests direct through hotel reception so be sure to call us first. Fantastic all round venue in a central location, ideal for weddings and functions, everything under one roof. In the heart of the historic city of Lancaster, with views of its famous castle, stands the Royal Kings Arms Hotel. Originally built in 1625 and later rebuilt in 1879, the hotel was immortalized by Charles Dickens in his tale of "The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices". This Grade II listed hotel has 55 comfortable en-suite bedrooms, including the luxury Castle Suite, with its four poster bed and views of the castle, the entrance to which is just 50 yards away. With origins dating back almost 1,000 years Lancaster Castle, a Grade 1 listed building, occupies a city-centre hilltop location on the site of three successive Roman forts and has been described by English Heritage as "not only the North-West's most important historic and archaeological monument but also of international importance". Other historic buildings in Lancaster include the Judge's Lodgings and the Doll Museum. The sea plays a big part in Lancaster's history and the Maritime Museum is a fascinating place to visit. Beyond the city, the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales are within easy reach, while the seaside resorts of Morecambe and Blackpool are a short drive away. Breakfast is available when checking in at reception, we do have car parking facilities at £5 per car per stay at the rear of the hotel. ... more   less
