The Royal kings Arms is a city centre hotel in Lancaster. Although it may have seen better days, and would have been stunning in its heyday, it offers a refreshing alternative to those sterile "chain store hotels" at a fraction of their cost. The warm, comfortable room matched the warmth of the welcome from the great reception staff. Interesting experience...

A very warm welcome on a very cold day. We got out of a cold wind into a very nicely heated and cosy hotel. The staff are , as always, very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is very relaxing and a lot more interesting than modern chrome and glass boxes.

Stayed there for ten nights as hotel in Carnforth was not available. Thus commuted twice a day from his hotel which is 11 minutes' walk from the train station. The hotel is a sweet old thing with creaky stairs and ditto elevator. Bathroom was nice and recent. Room decor dated - stuck in 1947, but with a telly. Breakfast room...

Had a lovely stay at the Royal Kings Arms over Christmas. Got treated to the Castle View room complete with four poster bed and lovely chairs and coffee table. Disregard the bad reviews - this is a lovely hotel with charm and is immaculately clean. Refurbishment is promised for 2017 which hopefully will not detract from the character of this...

A listed building has strict rules about internal and external changes; it cannot be turned into a chromed 21st century squared off structure. I could see the improvements done. I would go there again if given the opportunity. What´s a touch of faded paint to share accommodation used by Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins? The staff were friendly and helpful;...

Yes it needs a bit of TLC, but it's spotless, the staff are amazing, the breakfast is lovely in a glorious dining room and as near to the station and city centre as anyone could ever want. So put away your knives and see it for what it is - a beautiful old hotel, being run to the best of...

If you want to stay in Lancaster city centre, you can stay in the new, identikit Travelodge nearby (and "enjoy" their £4.95 Breakfast Box) but for the same or a little more I prefer the faded grandeur and splendid, waiter-served "Full Lancashire Breakfast" of the Royal King's Arms. I work in Lancaster and stay here whenever I do not want...

We only stayed one night in Lancaster and did not eat in the hotel but if you want a room in the middle of a city with parking then the Royal Kings Arms is ideal. The castle was to the left of hotel entrance and the city shopping centre was to the right. The room was clean, the shower powerful...

This place felt a bit like the place that time forgot. My room was grotty; the skirting boards were crumbling, and the wall flaking by the toilet. My duvet was about as thin as I've ever experienced. Floor boards creeked. The lift was ancient. I haven't seen one like it in decades. All that said, the reception staff were very...

My very first break away with my fiance 8 years ago and have since been back a further 3 times. Great location love the big open rooms and antique style, last time we stay though was starting to look tired. Food lovely and very accomodating would recommend to anyone once tidied up. Lovely bar near by called the pub and...

Dear brettonbabe, I would like to thank you for your review and your positive feedback. The team and I have made many changes to the hotel in the past few months which have been noticeable to many of our guests. A full refurbishment is in plan for the new year and we are working hard to continue to maintain and...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
We always offer the best prices to our guests direct through hotel reception so be sure to call us first. Fantastic all round venue in a central location, ideal for weddings and functions, everything under one roof. In the heart of the historic city of Lancaster, with views of its famous castle, stands the Royal Kings Arms Hotel. Originally built in 1625 and later rebuilt in 1879, the hotel was immortalized by Charles Dickens in his tale of "The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices". This Grade II listed hotel has 55 comfortable en-suite bedrooms, including the luxury Castle Suite, with its four poster bed and views of the castle, the entrance to which is just 50 yards away. With origins dating back almost 1,000 years Lancaster Castle, a Grade 1 listed building, occupies a city-centre hilltop location on the site of three successive Roman forts and has been described by English Heritage as "not only the North-West's most important historic and archaeological monument but also of international importance". Other historic buildings in Lancaster include the Judge's Lodgings and the Doll Museum. The sea plays a big part in Lancaster's history and the Maritime Museum is a fascinating place to visit. Beyond the city, the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales are within easy reach, while the seaside resorts of Morecambe and Blackpool are a short drive away. Breakfast is available when checking in at reception, we do have car parking facilities at £5 per car per stay at the rear of the hotel. ... more   less
