Butler House, Luxury Guesthouse - formally the Dower House of Kilkenny Castle built in 1770. This historical house is situated in the centre of Kilkenny City, adjacent to Kilkenny Castle. An integral part of the Kilkenny Castle Estate, Butler House was home to the Earls of Ormonde, who also built the castle, stables and coach houses at the rear. Sweeping staircases, magnificent plastered ceilings and marble fireplaces are all features of this 18th century house. The house is a combination of contemporary furnishings and period elegance. Butler House boasts fourteen special rooms and suites, all with their own individual character. Designed to provide maximum comfort, each has a modern bathroom, and is decorated with soft coordinated fabrics and furnishings. The balance of old and new is prevalent throughout the rooms – contemporary furnishings are combined with the magnificent original features, which afford guests an impressive sense of comfort and space.

Good location, surprisingly lovely garden in an urban setting, efficient and friendly service, excellent food. What more can you ask? On a 3-day trip through Kilkenny and Kildare to reward ourselves with some post-vaccination freedom, we followed a night here with two at a highly rated castle/golf course hotel. I would rather have reversed it- one night in the castle finishing with two here. It really is that nice. My only comment is that while we had a really spacious room, it was street facing, and we would have preferred a garden view. I'm not sure if the difference is clear on the website, or if there is price difference or even a size difference, but that's my fault, not the hotel's. Next time, I'll know.

Firstly, it needs to be said that the staff in Butler House are some of the friendliest I have ever encountered. From the reception staff to the ladies waiting on us at breakfast everyone was so warm and genuinely friendly. Secondly, the location is absolutely ideal its a 5 minute walk to shops, pubs, restaurants etc as well as soo close to the beautiful Kilkenny castle. Our room was lovely, on the smaller side but really clean and modern. The Tv had loads of channels too. The room could get quite warm and stuffy as the windows don’t open much but to be fair there was a fan provided in the room (we didn’t need to use it). The bathroom was really spacious with a separate bath and shower. The breakfast was top notch and they were extremely generous with all the delicious options (and no judgment when you asked for seconds 😋) We ate dinner here one night, the view from the restaurant/breakfast room is gorgeous and the food is filling and delicious. I recommend the prawn and chorizo linguine! Overall we had a lovely stay, I would definitely recommend staying in Butler House!

This is a gorgeous outdoor venue with a beautiful garden , set in a lovely sun trap. Take a walk over after the castle and ramble around taking in its beauty. Quaint, quiet and calming. There are wild flowers, a pond and remarkably the remnants of Nelson’s Pillar. Well worth a visit; 10/10.

3 of us stayed here last month in Room 51. It was a garden view superior suite. Extremely spacious with a great shower and comfortable bed. Very clean and adhering to Covid restrictions. Staff genuinely couldn't have been nicer and went out of their way on several occasions for us. The gardens are amazing and a lovely element to a city hotel. The breakfast menu had a huge amount of choice. Will definitely be back :-)

Myself and two pals stayed for two nights last month. The location is excellent, right in the middle of Kilkenny. The staff couldn't have been nicer, having the chats and helping in any way they could. Breakfast was extensive and a talking point each morning. The gardens were breathtaking. We commented on how it would be beautiful for a wedding. Our room was so big with a double and single and three armchairs and coffee table and fireplace. The room was definitely a bit dated and we did comment about how much could be done with the room but it was still lovely with a beautiful bathroom. We'll definitely be back.
