We stayed here with our tour group, so we had no choice in the accommodations. The first thing that struck me about this hotel is the smell, I still cannot put my finger on it but it is peculiar. The rooms were not comfortable. The hotel is like a maze as you have to go up several stairs and then... More

We stayed 2 nights whilst travelling for 3 weeks....stayed in some very expensive joints and some cheaper. The Royal has very basic rooms but real clean...no glamour but...excellent food. Warm and friendly welcome and lovely nights sleep. First with wifi in rooms.! At the price....I say bang on.

Very tired looking hotel. It felt like the heating was on and the room was very stuffy and hot. Bit of a rabbit warren inside. Was kept awake by noisy rugby team about 2.30am (not the hotels fault). Very dated, needs big revamp. Hotel was v busy when we were there and I guess it is on the tourist trail... More

The Royal is a dated hotel that really needs some serious revamping. Initial check in was slow with a receptionist who didn't have a lot of interest. The hotel is "maze" like to try and find some of the rooms whether it's up or downstairs around the whole building without and really clue to where the rooms are. Didn't bother... More

This is the worst hotel I have stayed in ever!! Yes, the linen and bed sheets were clean. Yes, everything worked. Yes, the breakfast was adequate. But how this hotel can claim to be 3 star I will never ever know! I booked a single room at the Royal online and looking at the photos it didn't look too bad.... More

Go for a back room if you want to sleep through the night. We had a front facing room and every night when the bars let out there would be drunk shenanigans going on very loudly. As other reviewers indicated the hotel is not sound proofed at all. I had my ear plugs and closed the window so it only... More

Stayed here a couple of nights ago while cycling the 500 with a friend and couldn't find fault. It was welcoming, spotless, friendly, the breakfast was speedy and good quality, and great value. It is a little traditional but that adds to the charm.

First impressions are so important in the hospitality business and unfortunately ours were not good. Whether approaching from the front entrance or the back, this hotel shouted "tired and can't be bothered". The staff member at reception was lethargic and disinterested, the back entrance was flooded so we had to paddle in; the lift was barely operational and it was... More

I had a fantastic stay and loved the charm of this hotel. Please don't be put off by the harsh reviews left by individuals that I'm not even sure have been to the hotel! The staff were all local, welcoming and friendly. On my first night I had the homemade soup and the tagine in the bar which was delicious,... More

This hotel is a bit tired could do with upgrading. But on saying that it was good value. They bedroom was clean and bed comfortable. A good breakfast was also served with a good selection. It is a good stop over from John O,Groats. There is a Bistro attached too the hotel which serves food from 6pm.
