Lovely room, I stayed at the top of the house, apparently the smaller of the rooms but it was easily big enough. Immaculately clean, throughout and a great breakfast in the morning. I was well looked after.

Stayed here for one night while on business in the area. Very friendly hosts. The house has been very well restored, nicely decorated and very clean. Comfortable bed. Only grumble was room was cold but it was a very cold night and it is an old house with high ceilings and large rooms. Would not put me off staying here...

I had stayed in this B&B before and the service was out of this world. I decided to go back for a 2nd time and the service was still exceptional, my journey took longer than expected and the B&B called to make sure I was safe. Introduction was so welcoming and the room overlooks the crashing waves of the sea,...

Wow! What more could our hosts do to make our stay so memorable? The house is splendid, Royal Dornoch room extremely comfortable, breakfast matching any five star hotel. Cannot recommend PH highly enough. Would definitely stay again.

We stayed at this place only for one night after coming from Orkney. The owner offered to pick us up at the ferry and was also very nice to give us recommendations for our way onwards. Overall we were very impressed by the hospitality and generally on how nice the owner was. The room (we took one of the ones...

Raymond and Carol were the perfect hosts. The house is beautifully decorated and furnished, and our room was spacious and very comfortable. We had a delicious breakfast, and Raymond kindly gave us a lift to the ferry terminal for our trip to Orkney. Thank you also for providing good sized towels. Even some hotels only give you a pocket handkerchief....

This is a truly fantastic B&B! The room (Royal Dornoch) was absolutely immaculate with everything you could possibly want and very spacious. The breakfast was worthy of a Michellin star! Try the waffles with bacon and maple syrup - delicious! Carol and Raymond are so kind. I wish we had stayed longer but would certainly return and wouldn't hesitate to...

A very welcoming B&B with little touches such as a chocolate on the bed and a local map pack, this was a great touch and had I known this I would have maybe stayed longer and kept Thurso as my base for 2 days rather than 1. Thurso is fairly central for the far North as a spring board for...

Spent a memorable night in the 'Brora' room at historic Pennyland House, birthplace of Boys' Brigade' founder, Sir William Smith. The warm welcome I received from owners Raymond & Carol was second to none, as was the quality of my beautiful room and Raymond's cooked breakfast, using top quality local produce. Will definitely return, next time with my wife.

The Pennyland is situated a short 10 minute walk from the town centre. First impressions are of a well maintained & cared for house with ample parking and an outside deck area with sea views. We were in the Carnoustie room. it is decorated and fitted out to a high standard and is spotlessly clean with comfortable beds and a...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Pennyland House is located on the edge of Thurso in a quiet, but convenient location and boasts wonderful views of the Orkney Islands, Dunnet Head, Scrabster and Thurso Bay. It is a three story building dating back over two hundred years. Built in 1780 it is historically noted for being the birthplace of Sir William Alexander Smith, the founder of the Boys Brigade. Over the past few years we have sympathetically renovated this historic building and turned it into a comfortable and interesting bed and breakfast for our guests. Although not yet rated, we are confident that you will not be disappointed with the quality and service during your stay with us. We have enjoyed putting our personal stamp on Pennyland House and have tried to reflect what we believe people want in a 'home from home'. ... more   less
