The rooms wardrobe smelt of dampness so I didnt hang my clothes in it. The bathroom was not clean the toilet seat needed relaced the glass on bottom of shower was dirty. The finale was the hand sink was placed right next to the shower preventing the shower door to open more than halfway. This made it impossible to get into the shower without injury unless you were like a matchstick.
the breakfast was excellent either a continental or cooked there was more than enough to choose from.
And ideal for the city centre shopping or the train station was only three minute walk away, where you can get a train to the SECC.
The hotel is very handy for Central Station when you follow the signs for the Hope Street exit. Also very near to a Wetherspoons, Coop and Tesco.
The hotel's street presence is nothing more than the doorway with the reception desk straight inside on the right. We arrived early and were able to leave our bags in the storage room which seemed to be a good size.
Check-in later in the day was very simple. The room was much larger than I expected with a double and a single bed, desk, chair and wardrobe which housed the safe and iron. Plentiful supplies of coffee, tea and milk where available as well as 2 bottles of water. The downside to the room was the bathroom which had a sloped floor and everything was in need of an update, although was still serviceable and worked fine.
Breakfast in the morning had a choice of cooked food (self service) and cereals and fruit. Everything seemed fresh and good quality.
All the staff we dealt with were friendly and polite.
Will consider staying here again. Yes it's not the 'best dressed' hotel in the world at the moment, (there are signs of improvements being made) but you definitely get a lot for the price.
On entering you are met by friendly staff who greet you nicely and quickly check you in. We were in our room within minutes of entering which was great. The room was comfortable but old style in need of modernization but clean and basic.
The hotel is antique and traditional old Scottish style with tartaness everywhere which I personally like. Apparently the owner loves the decor and wants to keep it authentic.
Breakfast was good with a buffet hot spread of typical english/Scottish breakfast, cereals, pastries and juices with an assortment of coffees. I asked for a vegan option however was informed this wasn't available due to hotel policy not wanting to introduce vegan options which I strongly believe isn't a good sign as any business needs to change with time and not get stuck in the past.
The room was basic but the noise from the room above us was unbearable and kept us awake all night. I really don't understand why they were walking around all bloody night.
Recommendations
Great location, old style hotel with average breakfast.
Recommend hotel make old wooden floors more silent and comfortable for guests.
Include vegan options for breakfast.

The cooked breakfast was very good given the price paid, including the offer of second helpings and top ups. Not gourmet by any means but standard catering affair. COVID measures were good with staggered access to the food and masks required (consistently worn by staff, hit and miss by other guests) but it was quite busy in the dining area. Staff were helpful including when I needed to get our TV remote batteries changed.
I had been put off by some reviews but it seems many of these were due to use earlier during COVID. However keep in mind there is construction happening directly opposite the hotel, we were at the back so didn't have any construction noise, although we were woken in the night by some people knocking loudly on another door down the corridor - not specifically the hotel's fault but quite irriating.
Security in the hotel is a little lacking as anyone can walk in, there's no key card needed to get past the reception to the corridors, there is a safe in the room though. There was luggage storage in a locked room, however no effort was made to actually check I took the right bag out when collecting (although if someone really wanted my clothes then...).
At £40 for a refundable double room including breakfast on a Saturday night I was very happy with the value for money.
