Stayed in the hotel for work in Glasgow... reception area nice staff all very friendly excellent breakfast. My room though I know I took a budget room but I had higher expectations. The bed was uncomfortable the mattress should have been replaced.

The rooms wardrobe smelt of dampness so I didnt hang my clothes in it. The bathroom was not clean the toilet seat needed relaced the glass on bottom of shower was dirty. The finale was the hand sink was placed right next to the shower preventing the shower door to open more than halfway. This made it impossible to get into the shower without injury unless you were like a matchstick.

The room was basic but very clean the heaters in the room were controlled by the us so it was very comfortable.
the breakfast was excellent either a continental or cooked there was more than enough to choose from.
And ideal for the city centre shopping or the train station was only three minute walk away, where you can get a train to the SECC.

Wanted a handy base for an overnight stay in Glasgow and the twin room for £39 seemed too good to ignore.

The hotel is very handy for Central Station when you follow the signs for the Hope Street exit. Also very near to a Wetherspoons, Coop and Tesco.

The hotel's street presence is nothing more than the doorway with the reception desk straight inside on the right. We arrived early and were able to leave our bags in the storage room which seemed to be a good size.

Check-in later in the day was very simple. The room was much larger than I expected with a double and a single bed, desk, chair and wardrobe which housed the safe and iron. Plentiful supplies of coffee, tea and milk where available as well as 2 bottles of water. The downside to the room was the bathroom which had a sloped floor and everything was in need of an update, although was still serviceable and worked fine.

Breakfast in the morning had a choice of cooked food (self service) and cereals and fruit. Everything seemed fresh and good quality.

All the staff we dealt with were friendly and polite.

Will consider staying here again. Yes it's not the 'best dressed' hotel in the world at the moment, (there are signs of improvements being made) but you definitely get a lot for the price.

The hotel is in a great location and right in the city centre next to central station.

On entering you are met by friendly staff who greet you nicely and quickly check you in. We were in our room within minutes of entering which was great. The room was comfortable but old style in need of modernization but clean and basic.

The hotel is antique and traditional old Scottish style with tartaness everywhere which I personally like. Apparently the owner loves the decor and wants to keep it authentic.

Breakfast was good with a buffet hot spread of typical english/Scottish breakfast, cereals, pastries and juices with an assortment of coffees. I asked for a vegan option however was informed this wasn't available due to hotel policy not wanting to introduce vegan options which I strongly believe isn't a good sign as any business needs to change with time and not get stuck in the past.

The room was basic but the noise from the room above us was unbearable and kept us awake all night. I really don't understand why they were walking around all bloody night.

Recommendations

Great location, old style hotel with average breakfast.

Recommend hotel make old wooden floors more silent and comfortable for guests.
Include vegan options for breakfast.

Great location. We were given a room on the 4th floor not realising it was a smoking room and smelled awful. A quick call to reception and we were moved to the 3rd floor. Bedroom so much better! Building site across the road so don't expect a long lie! Not the hotel's fault. Breakfast was buffet style with quite a lot to choose from but the cooked part was cheap sausages and bacon and overcooked eggs but cereal toast, fruit etc. was fine. Basically you get what you pay for. If you are looking for a cheap hotel in the middle of the city then this one is fine. Reception staff were very helpful and cheery.

I stayed with a friend for one night. The location is excellent just minutes from Glasgow Central station. Our room was spacious and clean although there were signs of age such as wear on the carpet - not dirt just scuff marks. Our bathroom appeared to be recently refurbished with great water pressure and temperature - although the bath wasn't usable as the plug didn't fit the plug hole.

The cooked breakfast was very good given the price paid, including the offer of second helpings and top ups. Not gourmet by any means but standard catering affair. COVID measures were good with staggered access to the food and masks required (consistently worn by staff, hit and miss by other guests) but it was quite busy in the dining area. Staff were helpful including when I needed to get our TV remote batteries changed.

I had been put off by some reviews but it seems many of these were due to use earlier during COVID. However keep in mind there is construction happening directly opposite the hotel, we were at the back so didn't have any construction noise, although we were woken in the night by some people knocking loudly on another door down the corridor - not specifically the hotel's fault but quite irriating.

Security in the hotel is a little lacking as anyone can walk in, there's no key card needed to get past the reception to the corridors, there is a safe in the room though. There was luggage storage in a locked room, however no effort was made to actually check I took the right bag out when collecting (although if someone really wanted my clothes then...).

At £40 for a refundable double room including breakfast on a Saturday night I was very happy with the value for money.

When staying at the Alexander Thompson we paid full price for a room that had no warning of the dawn to dusk building work going on immediately outside our window. I had surgery early that morning and the recommendation of 3/4 hours of rest definitely didn’t happen due to constant power tools being used. None of the staff were interested in our issue and even emailing them to suggest they stop letting the room for future bookings was a waste of time. Very disappointing they’re only thinking of their pockets rather than any form of customer comfort.

I come away from here still unsure what to think of the place... We were greeted by a guy on the reception who was complaining to a fellow guest on how tired he was. He did indeed look like he had been out all night. As a previous worker in the hotel industry, first impressions are important especially front desk. All other members of staff were lovely and very helpful especially the breakfast team. Speaking of breakfast it was excellent, such a wide variety of things including your typical hot breakfast also cold. The breakfast room itself is beautiful, very clean and a nice decor. 10/10 on that part. The bar area/lounge were also lovely, warm and cosy. On to the rooms, this is where it gets dissapointing. The main light in a room is not good enough it is a single bulb which is normally found inside a bathroom however they do supply lamps which was not a problem as such. The walls were marked and some paint was peeling, could do with a touch up. The light curtain in room 303 could also do with a clean as it's stained. On to the bathroom behind the toilet on the floor is a mess, within the toilet around the rims is a mess, mould. The door to the bathroom is not in good condition, marked and dented from the wall. The shower was good, warm and spacious. Overall it was a good stay but attention to detail needs to be carried out in this establishment.

We stayed for one night and had a wonderful experience. As the hotel had been so cheap we had not expected much, but were absolutely pleasantly surprised. The facilities were excellent, we booked a twin room and it had a double and single bed, the TV was enormous, there was a shower and a bath, room were clean and the lovely old features had been kept. Blackout curtains were great too. Breakfast was good. The staff were all helpful, friendly and lovely, from reception to dining. The location is excellent. We parked in the nearby Q car park on Jamaica street as recommended by the hotel and recieved our 50% discount too. An all round excellent stay. Thank you!

I think breakfast is served from 7-10 am. Just to warn you they stop serving at exactly 10am. The staff will take away everything on display at 10.05 and so by 10.15 all food will be gone including the coffee machine turned off. They don't care about their guests as their pricing structure has breakfast as complimentary.
