I stayed here with friends as we were visiting Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival. My friends and I are all in our early twenties and are graduates, so we were after student-style cheap accommodation that would act solely as a place where we could sleep for the night. The basic quality of the rooms was not a problem for me... More

Well, positive point: -The staff, which is really kind and helpful -The location, which is really central and allow you going around freely -The reception open all night long Negative: -No mirror in the room. -The room wasn't so clean... not the blanket or the bed stuff but the floor. -It's a quite old building which needs a lot of... We booked a 6 room apartment with 2 bathrooms. We were a group of 6 friends. Unfortunately, the shower in one of the bathrooms was not functioning. We reported it early in the morning before our city tour. When we returned in the evening, the shower was still not fixed. Upon reporting it, the attendant told us that the shower... More

I stayed two nights here. It's student accommodation during term time, so that gives you an idea of what the rooms/buildings are like. I stayed in a single room within a 6-bed all female flat (which as a woman travelling alone I was really grateful that they offered). Inside the room was a single bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers and... More

I stayed at this hostel for two nights during the Fringe festival and it did not disappoint. The hostel has been converted from old students halls of residence, so it has a similar appearance and feel to such an establishment. I requested a private single room, which has a private room with a bed, desk and wardrobe, along with shared... More

It's basic university digs with a single bedroom, shared bathroom and kitchen. All spotlessly clean and comfortable. The location is great to get into the city centre and see all the tourist spots. The guys on reception were very friendly. All in all, a nice cheap way to stay in Edinburgh!

The Metro Hostel is University Halls during term time, and it shows when you visit. The accommodation is very basic, but it's cheap and cheerful. You can rent a single room within an apartment - shared kitchen and bathroom, or for larger groups you can rent an apartment. I was a little apprehensive, travelling as a single woman, but it... I decided to extend my stay in Edinbugh during Fringe, and this was basically the only place I could find to stay that wasn't hideously overpriced or far from the center, so I took a chance on a youth hostel (let's just say I am not a youth!) The location is great, although it is loud at night during the... More

The Metro Hostel is located in the inner city of Edinburgh. Rooms are clean and you can use several common kitchens. The hostel has a good value for the central site. Its maybe not a hostel for partying, but the price is unbeatable (34 €/ night for a single room). The service could be better.

I was very pleased: a simple but clean and cheap place to stay right in the city center. Very helpful and friendly staff, felt welcome and safe. I'll definitely come back when I'll be in Edinburgh again!

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Edinburgh Metro Youth Hostel will open for almost two months this summer, taking over Edinburgh University's halls of residence on the Cowgate, to provide budget accommodation for visitors to Scotland's capital in July and August. Edinburgh Metro accommodation is in single rooms only, within private apartments of 4, 5 and 6 rooms available to book. Each apartment has shared bathroom and kitchen facilities, with reception open 24 hours. Edinburgh Metro Youth Hostel is ideal for groups or individuals visiting the city. Wi-Fi during your stay: We do our best to deliver a free Wi-Fi service but apologise that connectivity, particularly in our rural locations, can be intermittent due to the level of our current broadband provision along with high usage when the youth hostel is busy. Please be assured we are endeavouring to improve where we can. We thank you for your patience and understanding. ... more   less
