Started my two-week Scottish vacation in Edinburgh, where I stayed at the lovely 14 Hart Street B&B. Gracious and helpful hosts, James and Angela, offered suggestions and advice, shared stories and experiences, and prepared delicious and hearty breakfasts. Large and comfortable rooms – complete with a courtesy tray of whisky and wine – coupled with a great location made this... More

My partner and I stayed here for three nights in early June. Its position is excellent, situated on a quiet street within easy walking distance to the main center and other attractions. James and Angela are the perfect hosts, from the moment we arrived to the minute we left they could not do enough for us. The room we stayed... More

How did we love this B&B? Let me count the ways! 1. 14 Hart Street is in a great location. It is on a quiet street, yet close to the bustling city of Edinburgh. We found it easy to walk to the Royal Mile, to several major museums, and to plenty of restaurants and pubs. 2. We got a warm... More

We found 14 Hart Street the perfect place for our two-day stay in Edinburgh. James and Angela were very friendly and accommodating, the room was comfortable, charmingly decorated with art and antiques but with modern en suite bathroom, and a window view into a lovely garden. The breakfast was delicious with fresh fruit, yogurt and cereal, and a range of... More

James and Angela are the perfect hosts! Both were so accommodating for my very late arrival to some of my weird runners needs! I stayed for 3 days at the end of May. My room was very clean and very comfortable. After running the Edinburgh marathon the soft and comfy bed was amazing. Breakfast as great, the location is great... More

We have just returned from the most wonderful 3 night break in Edinburgh, and staying at this beautiful B &B made the experience a memorable and fantastic one. James and Angela are perfect hosts - from an immediate warm and friendly welcome as soon as you walk through the door to the moment you reluctantly say goodbye, they are both... More

My wife and I stayed here in late May. We loved everything about the place. The location was ideal; the room was comfortable, with an excellent bed; the bathroom (though small) was clean and efficient, with a great shower; the breakfasts were outstanding; and James and Angela were wonderful hosts and really fun to talk to. Plus, there were other... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
