A large room with a sofa, 2 very comfortable beds and fabulous breakfasts. The house is within walking distance of Princes St. and the Castle etc. Best of all was our host Aileen who could not have been more welcoming and friendly. She gave us helpful tips and advice to make the best of our time in Edinburgh and even... More

My fourth trip to Edinburgh and my fourth lodging location; two other lovely B&Bs and the 5 star Balmoral Hotel...but I'll be coming back here. I could write a book about how wonderful this place is. It all begins with Aileen - friendly, engaging and just a downright sweetheart. We were a golfing foursome. Our two rooms were immaculate, mine... More

I can't say enough wonderful things about this property. First, Aileen, the owner, is outstanding. Friendly, outgoing and helpful to start. Plus, once you are there she doesn't bother you unless you need her. Next, the room (we stayed in colonial) is very nice and well appointed. Plus you can come and go in privacy through a separate door to... More

We are not quite sure which is the best, our wonderful host Aileen or her accomodations. Very comfortable and big room, well located. Her hospitality was amasing, she went out of her way to make us feel welcome. Her made to breakfast was scrumptions. As for Aileen, she took pride and joy in making our stay most memorable. Room offered... More

What makes the Victorian Town House such an outstanding place to stay? Everything! First and foremost, the owner, Aileen, is sincerely hospitable and obviously enjoys interacting with her guests. Her lively demeanor and friendliness make this establishment feel like home. And she prepares a wonderful hot breakfast to get one's day started off right! I stayed in the Caledonian Room,... More

We only stayed for two nights, but wish we had stayed for longer. Our room was huge, clean, and had everything we needed (plus more - chocolates and whisky provided by Aileen). The location was great for us. It was very close to the haymarket train station for trains in/out of town and the tram/bus to the airport, but still... More

The owner (Aileen) is the Best! Perfect hostess in that she is conversational, but does not overstay her welcome. Her food was delicious, and the breakfast room was available 24 hours a day (we used the refrigerator for sodas). She recommended a wonderful Indian restaurant nearby that we walked to and the food was outstanding. It is very difficult to... More

Aileen was the ultimate hostess! My daughter and I spent 3 nights there this week and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We took the tram in from the airport and it works wonderfully. Just a short walk from Haymarket to the townhouse. We walked from there to Princes and High Street, got lost a few times but always found the way.... More

Beautiful townhouse with separate basement entry to bedrooms. Close walking distance to rail station, restaurants, quick-carry grocers, and bus stops. Best of all is Aileen! Aside from gorgeous themed rooms with en-suite bathrooms (ours was African themed with a fireplace), sitting lounge and welcoming Scotch whiskey and chocolates, the breakfasts are full service Scottish breakfasts cooked by Aileen herself. I... More

My family of four stayed in two rooms this May for a 3-night stay and simply can't say enough positive things about The Victorian Town House. Staying with Aileen is like staying with your favorite Auntie - the accomodations are fantastic, with large rooms, delicious Scottish breakfast and very convenient location. As stated in the title, there is a reason... More

Staying in West End

Neighborhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighborhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theaters and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
