My wife and I have stayed at the Adria House on three separate occasions all during different seasons of the year. By far this is the most comfortable, quiet, and immaculately maintained of any guest house/small hotel in which we've stayed in the UK. A good part of that is due to the hosts who have kept their childhood home... More

We enjoyed our stay at Adria House. Eddie and Maria are gracious hosts who are very knowledge and enthusiastic about their city. The hotel is an old Georgian Townhouse that is a class A property so it contains many features of the era, and has been well restored. Breakfast was hearty with a good range of items on offer including... More

An old, gracious family home, now a b & b Adria House is run by a brother and sister who grew up in the house. The rooms are very spacious with large bathrooms. Ours had a beautiful view of the garden. Once again no lift but host Eddie was more than happy to lug our very heavy suitcases up the... More

This B&B is perfectly located between the city center and harbor with numerous nearby attractions and restaurants within walking distance. Its location at the top of a hill across from a park provides a nice degree of seclusion and good views also. The house itself is a gorgeous Georgian with an interesting history. The rooms are immaculate and spacious with... More

We stayed here for the festival. The hotel is stunning, rich in history. The building is 200 years old. The brother and sister that run the hotel are very friendly and made us feel very welcome. I highly recommend this hotel.

Our family stayed 3 nights (2 rooms) in Adria House. Great B&B just behind Calton Hill (so in practise quite near Edinburgh city centre, about 10 min walk to Princes St.). A charming, about 200 years old house with lovely rooms (not only the hotel rooms but also dining and "living" room). Our rooms were roomy and very, very clean.... More

I booked my 88 year old Dad into Adria House for 12 days in July. He's a little creaky and fairly deaf, so had a few trepidations about how he'd / they'd cope. All worked out wonderfully, thanks to Maria and Eddie being exceptionally kind and experienced hosts. The classical period property is perfectly located in a peaceful leafy terrace... More

Adria House is a wonderful B and B in a quiet, safe neighborhood. You will be welcomed by the delightful owners, Maria and Eddie, who are siblings and hosts, both very personable and helpful and serve a full breakfast. The commons and the bedrooms are well-appointed and spacious. Definitely would return, and the cost is reasonable.

We had a lovely, beautifully decorated suite with plenty of room, which included a sofa, writing desk, coffee table and 3 beds. The location is perfect as it is just a few-minute walk from restaurants, entertainment and public transport. Edward and Maria took excellent care of us, including procurement of a beautiful floral bouquet for my sister's 82nd birthday!

We stayed at the Adria House in March 2015. It was ideally located, a comfortable walk from Waverley Station and just around the corner in our opinion from Princes Street. An ideal location. We had a good climb to our room at the top of the house and were greeted with a fantastic bathroom attached to our comfortable double bedroom.... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The family-run Adria House offers charming, comfortable accommodation and good value for it's central location. It is within easy walking distance of the main bus and train stations and also near many of Edinburgh's principal cultural, historical and retail landmarks. Situated on Calton Hill within a UNESCO World Heritage Site and once a fashionable society house, the Adria House embodies much of the Georgian architecture and decorative elegance associated with the period found within Edinburgh's New Town. ... more   less
