Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighborhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theaters and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.

We stayed here while up in Edinburgh for a friend’s wedding at the Traverse Theatre and the hotel staff couldn’t have been more helpful and friendly. I stayed at The Cally earlier in the year and can confidentially say Angels Share beat them hands down. We arrived on the sleeper, and after a call the day before to arrange it, we were able to check in early so we could get to the wedding without being a sweaty mess. The hotel is very centrally situated at the west end of Princes Street so it was a short walk to the Traverse. We stayed in Shirley Mason which was big enough for our overnight stay but didn’t skimp in the size of the bathroom. Breakfast was good - the beef and haggis sausage was excellent. I’d happily stay here again but next time I’ll make sure I book directly

I chose this hotel on account of its location within easy and safe walking distance of the Usher Hall. It's not easy to book a single room for one night on the last weekend of the Edinburgh Festival so I paid more than I normally would, hoping it would be value for money. It was easy to find and tucked away around a corner off the main busy areas, so reasonably quiet. I found the check-in process over fussy, asking me to give info which they already held – email address and bank card details – so it did not create a welcoming impression. I was told I had a "wee" single room, which to English ears sounds quite cosy and inviting. Actually it was really tiny and dark, with an unrelenting view of scaffolding on the next building. A double bed with a mountain of pillows was crammed

Hi 293gillianc, Thank you very much for taking the time to review our hotel. I am disappointed to learn that you were unsatisfied with your stay. I would like to take this opportunity to apologise that the room did not meet your expectations. We try to be very clear that our single room is a small space, suitable for only one person. Good location near main shopping street, opposite end to the train station. Nice reception area, with beautiful bar. Had room on the third floor, quiet and clean. Upgraded to the slightly larger room, ok size especially with large suitcases. Not sure I’d want a standard room due to size. Had breakfast one morning, very good and big size. Would definitely stay again

Fantastic hotel and staff. My husband and I stayed at the hotel for a week while visiting Edinburgh. The location was perfect, close to everything yet on a quiet street. We walked to most of the attractions from the hotel and the restaurant in the hotel was great for breakfast or dinner. We are looking forward to another visit.

Edinburgh at the end of August is always going to be a crapshoot given the thousands of people in town for the Festival, the Fringe and the Tattoo, but we were fortunate enough to get a reservation at The Angels Share. The location really can't be beaten, very central and within walking distance of many bars, restaurants and event locations. Rooms were clean, well appointed and comfortable. We didn't eat there, so can't comment, but Jane and Hollie on the front desk couldn't have been nicer and more helpful, so thanks a great deal to both of them for really making our stay more memorable. I'd recommend the hotel.
