The staff is really cool there, they're quite all not from scotland, so they can be travellers like you. We had a private room, quite small but enough to sleep. It was clean too. The common aera are not ultra clean but not dirty too. Prices are pretty cheap and the emplacement is perfect you're near from everything. Wifi is... More

I checked over the reviews on my train up to edinburgh on the site prior to check in. The first one I read was 'worse than prison'! I was really expecting somewhere grim. I was suprised at what I found. Yes, the place is a bit of a dive. It's smelly in the hallways, someone has defiantly been sick on... More

Horrible hostel. Cold showers, bad beds, unfriendly staff, even chancing toilet paper was too much effort. They speak bad English and are rude. Rooms are dirty. Only the location is nice. There are enough hostels around, so don't stay here.

Spent a week here between more permanent accommodation and was surprised by how good a price I got considering the location. The room was basic but clean and warm at night. My outer room wall was undressed stone which I quite liked. I had a window facing the street but I didnt find the noise too unbearable. Noisy on the... More

Oh my god...everything you read about this place is true...it is horrific. It was dirty, grubby and old. The toilets and showers were horrible...hair everywhere and half of then not working or the cubicle was filled with junk. The exterior doors did not lock and the lock on our room was so flimsy I felt unsafe at night. The room... More

Not comfortable at all, just localization was good. Staff silent, they even didn't show where is toilet or kitchen, didn't say anything about closing hour. No microwave in second building. Floor was extremely dirty, under beds where really big amount of stuff after previous guests so i even don't want to think how long time ago it was cleaned... BUT... More

Although the location is perfect, it was really a pity that only one of the three showers worked. I had to queue with other people waiting for me. Far from a relaxed stay you would say. On top of this, there was also only one toilet available for the whole first floor. Another thing is that it is strange in... More

I stayed here for the first time about 8 years ago, and I remembered it being OK, so, as it was the cheapest place I could find at the time I looked, I figured it would be OK again. I'm not sure if my standards have increased or whether literally no maintenance has been done to the place since 2008... More

Stayed here for one night because everything else was so expensive due to the Edinburgh festival. It was still overpriced but it was the cheapest in the best location. 6 bed dorm was very basic, just 6 beds, no lockers or anything else. I didn't have a problem with men's bathroom but i have become immune to toilet smells in... More

Very loud and dirty. The bathrooms were gross and smelled weird. I could only bring myself to shower once in 2 days. I guess I only payed for location. Terrible experience. Some of the staff were rude and the towel I was given would was not big enough to cover me, pretty much a hand towel.

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
