Let me preface this by saying I HATE giving out bad reviews (this is my first bad review ever), especially for small businesses. It is extremely hard to run a business and people pour their lives into it, and people can be extremely negative on reviews. I usually will try somewhere if there is some bad reviews, and make my... I don't normally bother writing reviews unless a place is particularly good or bad. Brodie's is without question the latter. It's cheap and the location is fine. That's about all you can say while being positive. The place is utterly revolting. A toilet that doesn't flush but which is still apparently in full use, a sink and a faulty door... More

There was a note on the bedroom door that said something along the lines of 'We like to think that Brodies offers one of the best examples of a city hostel in Edinburgh', to which I could only think 'are they kidding?' There are some perfectly lovely hostels in Edinburgh - the High Street Hostel just over the road being... More

We booked this hostel because it has an absolutely central location in High Street, therefore you can not stay more central in the old town part of Edinburgh. Additionally, the price per bed / night is relatively low so we booked a whole room for our selves. The check in and out was quick. With this said, with location, price... More

We stayed in Double room (not a en-suite) for 2 nights. 1. The SAGGING MATTRESS. So uncomfortanle, you can feel the back pain. We arrived really late on the first night, and we were too tired to ask for the change. Next day, we left 5am and came back 7pm, asked if they could change our mattress, the guy said... More

Both the facilities and the service were shocking. Facilities - As soon as you step inside the door, the foul smell hits you and permates the whole building. The buidling is dark and dingy. The walls and floors are stained. The bathroom and shower areas are not secure. There is no secure storage for bags, they are left in the... More

Perfect location for popping in and out when around the city but really that is the only positive. Really overpriced for a double room seeing as it was just a dirty bed and nothing else in the room. The noise level at all times of day was incredible. People pounding up and down the halls and coming in shouting at... More

Real simple hostel, old, smelly, cold and noisy… The receptionist already adviced us not to expect much from our double room. This warn was quite fair, as the double room is spacious (this ist he good thing) but it is super old in general: old and noisy bed, freezing as the window does not close properly and the only heater... Worst hostel experience ever ! When we arrived at the reception, the only persons we found were two junkies sleeping and dealing in the living room. We had to wait at least ten minutes before the receptionist arrived. He seemed completly stoned ! We asked him about the wifi. He told us it was 3 pounds a day but he... More

For such a great location and price, we should have known it was too good to be true. The entire hostel smelled like wet dog, except for the showers smelled like poop. It was surprising, since the staff always seem to be cleaning. The beds were comfy but the room was dark and sad and the blinds were broken. The... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
