This is a lovely find in a part of the city I'd never been to before. Although it's not in the centre you're just a few minutes stroll from the huslte and bustle that Edinburgh has to offer. The accomodation itself is more traditional than modern, but that fits the style of house it's presented it. It feels really homely...

We are a mature couple and booked just one night at A Georgian Residence. We enjoyed our brief stay so much we asked Mrs. Shanks (the very charming and hospitable owner) if we could stay another night. Unfortunately the large room we slept in on the 3rd floor which overlooked the back garden wasn't available for the 2nd night, but...

When I arrived I could not believe this was where I was going to stay it was such an amazing house. Lovely big rooms with great views. The breakfast was excellent and Florence Shanks could not have been more helpful, a wonderful hostess with great knowledge of what is on in Edinburgh and great places to eat. I will definatly...

An elegant Georgian terrace nestling in a very attractive yet peaceful part of Edinburgh's newtown. The accomodation is quirky but well furnished with period pieces. Mrs Shanks is very welcoming and has good knowledge of local restaurants and sights, and is also happy to lend a key to the well maintained and extensive communal gardens nearby. The breakfasts are varied...

Spacious room, superb breakfast, central location. However, the best aspect of this charming Georgian residence was the lively and interesting breakfast conversation with others from around the world. The owner, Florence Shanks, is hospitable and interested in whatever is happening in Edinburgh. As there is no elevator, there was a bit of a climb to our 3rd floor bedroom, but this...

The breakfast is good and the service too. Florence is an excellent host. The residence is situated in a fantastic location and one can easily walk to...

This is a lovely Georgian Townhouse - service excellent. We were at the top of the house, around 70 stairs(!!) but we are fit mid 40s - well I think we are! :) Lovely sheets and great Queen size bed! Lovely dining room for breakfast and Florence and her colleague (whose name I didn't get) were excellent in looking after...

A large, very pleasant room with nice selection of teas and good quality biscuits, towels, shampoo and soap. Florence - the owner - was very obliging and breakfast was good quality, served at a communal table seating about 10 guests. Quite a lot of stairs, so not very suitable for anyone with mobility problems, but fantastic central location.

We spent a total of five nights at 11 Moray Place during May, and on the second occasion we felt we had come home. Florence has a wonderful home and it was a privilege to stay in a gracious house so close to the city centre and yet have peace and quiet. Our room was spacious and well appointed, the...

As a B&B operator in Australia, we were delighted with this lovely Georgian residence. The servcie was first class and breakfast a delight. I had kippers for the first time in several years. Florence is a lovely hostess but because of her age, she cannot help with luggage and with the stairs some people may find this difficult. A tour...

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
