This was our third time to stay with Gerald, and we consider him family (I hope that's ok, Gerald!) His home is a short walk (downhill!) from the train station, and is convenient to all the attractions in both Old Town and New Town. There are fantastic restaurants only a couple of blocks away as well. The street is quiet, and the rooms are very clean and comfortable, with everything you need at hand! Gerald serves a full breakfast with many choices to eat and drink, which he personalizes to your tastes and time schedule. He even provides a small refrigerator in each room, and tea, candy, and whisky!

Please do not hesitate to stay with Gerald, you will not regret it! He is absolutely the best!!

My review was incredibly delayed due to personal reasons, however it was too fantastic an experience not to talk about. Gerald’s warm welcome and the whisky he generously offered absolutely swept my disappointment from the trip away(my bf made a cute mistake by not catching the plane haha). He is such a wonderful English gentleman that listens and don’t hesitate to share his own experience with you.

The apartment itself is undoubtedly elegantly decorated, presenting you with walls full of nice paintings and pictures. The room we had has a cozy double bed, equipped with a mini fridge and a spacious wardrobe. A nice view as well ofc. I’d say pretty much everything u would possibly need on such a trip. U would have access to ur own bathroom, perfectly clean and ordered. In fact I didn’t bring my cleansing balm on the first night and used the facial wipes Gerald kindly provided there. The cleaning lady is also very very helpful and hardworking.

Moving on to the breakfast part, I believe as u can see from the pictures down below, everything was as lovely as it can get. U are served with a full English breakfast along with various selections of yoghurt, fruits and cereals inside this cute little bright kitchen of theirs. This is usually enough food to support a whole day outside with no exaggeration. Gerald and his helpers at times cook something different for breakfast as well depending on what they get from the market, for example salmon.

I was once an undergraduate at UoE, hence I was not originally expecting my accommodation there to make a huge difference to my trip, as I’m sufficiently familiar with the city. However, in the end both my bf and I agree that staying at Gerald’s place was absolutely a wonderful decision. It has in fact made our trip even more enjoyable, romantic and unforgettable. That’s why I called it home-like. U go travelling to a lot of places and stay somewhere temporarily, but not many of them make u feel like it’s indeed part of your experience there.

If u happen to discover this b&b and are still trying to decide whether this is the one, I absolutely suggest u to give it a try!

Zizang :)

Geralds place was our highlight of our trip to Edinburgh. Gerald is one of the most genuine gentlemen i‘ve met. The best thing was the breakfast he cooked for us during our stay. The room and the toilet was very clean. The apartment itself is decorated very nicely and he also gave me a tour about the paintings he has collected during his life which was very interesting. Also the cleaning lady was very friendly and did a wonderful job. The location of Geralds place is very convenient you can walk to all the attractions. I can‘t think about anything negative i could say about Gerald as a person or the place. We even exchanged some very meaningful gifts.

Thank you Gerald for your hospitality and your great breakfasts.
I can only recommend Geralds place if you‘re planning to visit Edinburgh:)

Gerald's place is a gem in the heart of Edinburgh. The rooms were really well equipped and the property was stunning. Gerald loves his art and it makes the place so special.

We were offered a cooked breakfast every morning and it was truly exceptional. The food was delicious and Gerald was excellent company; we looked forward to breakfast with him each morning!

Gerald couldn't have done more to advise us on where to visit, where to eat, what to see etc. He was so helpful and knows Edinburgh incredibly well. He recommended an excellent restaurant called Fhior which was one of the best meals I've ever had.

The location is fantastic, and although you're right in the centre of things, the property is opposite some extensive gardens which makes the place really peaceful at night.

Everything about Gerald's place was excellent and I cannot recommend it enough. Gerald himself is a kind, funny, interesting and thoughtful man who made our trip really special, and we left with a new friend. If you're reading this review, then stop now and just book here! You will not find anywhere as fantastic as Gerald's place!

Gerald's Place was a wonderful start to our Scotland vacation. Before we even arrived, Gerald provided us with pages of information, suggestions, and orientation to our arrival in Edinburgh. Gerald's Place was located in New Town, close to parks, restaurants, shops and yet away from the bustle of the center of the city. There are only two rented rooms and my wife and I were in one and our traveling companions were in the other. The rooms were comfortable, and most important for us, quiet and peaceful at night. Our mornings began with a generous, made-to-order breakfast where we could choose from fresh fruits and vegetables, cereals, eggs, fish et. al. Gerald is a fascinating man who has lead quite an interesting life: with a little cajoling he will share some of his many experiences with you. We lingered over breakfast to enjoy Gerald's company. Of note, Gerald is an art collector, and has managed to find space for a lifetime of acquisitions.

Unfortunately, during our stay, I had an accident, and Gerald went out of his way to help me navigate getting care through the National Health Service; as well as supplying me with medications and ice packs. He went well beyond what I would have expected from an innkeeper. I should also add that his restaurant recommendations were terrific. I would not hesitate to return. Not the least in part because of my regard for Gerald and his warm hospitality.

We had the most wonderful time in Edinburgh and a large part of that is because of where we stayed. We could get anywhere we wanted by walking in 15 minutes or less and there were bus stops nearby. Gerald’s place was immaculate, and very well thought out. He had lots of little touches to make our stay extra special. His breakfast was the perfect fuel for our long days of exploring. He had amazing recommendations for restaurants and also lots of advice for activities. Gerald was a wonderful host and it was a pleasure to meet him and stay at his B&B.

All the reviews you will read on both trip advisor and booking are absolutely true!

This is a beautiful home in a wonderful part of Edinburgh - in no time you're in the hustle and bustle of the old town and not far down the hill there are quirky shops, cosy restaurants and the botanic gardens.

Gerald welcomed us so warmly and left so many thoughtful touches - chocolates, tea, china cups, whiskey and even bath gel that bubbles up! (to name just a few)

He was very conscious of keeping us and his other guests protected from Omnicrom so we didn't get a chance to enjoy his breakfast, but Gerald generously covered our breakfast costs for eating out.

He is a lovely man and a true host! We will definitely be back!

Gerald was an absolute gentleman. The guest house was clean, pleasantly old fashioned and quirky like its owner. It was more of an art gallery than a guest house but it was tastefully done and worked in the house very well. Gerald has a huge amount of recommendations and comprehensive lists of local attractions. We enjoyed the tea, whiskey and chocolates in the rooms. Breakfast was arranged at our convenience and we had the option of all the usual cereals and fruits along with a cooked Scottish breakfast or very tasty smoked salmon with eggs. It was in a good location.

We booked Gerald's Place after reading the stellar reviews and were not disappointed. While we did not have the opportunity to meet the legendary Gerald, his housekeeper filled his shoes most admirably. The accommodations were convenient, clean, and cozy. Breakfast featured more food than we could eat and bonus treats of chocolate and scotch made the stay even more terrific. Conversation and recommendations were all helpful. We highly recommend this place.

Gerald‘s Place is the perfect place to explore the city of Edinburgh and to get in touch with the most welcoming and wonderful host ever experienced. The apartment is located at the center and gives you the chance to get to all sites within a second. It is immaculately clean and the breakfast is a treat. But the icing on the cake is the host: Gerald, thank you for all the help, recommandations and heartwarming conversations, you made us feel at home.

Answer from GERALD
Edinburgh, United Kingdom13 contributions6 helpful votes
there is - 1 on street parking - metered : 2 off street parking nearby - St James multi-story car park : 3 a comprehensive INFORMATION attachment with a section on CARS, sent with every OFFER : 4 Edinburgh is a hugely cultural compact capital City - not much space for cars [trams / buses / taxis / commercial vehicles use up what little space there is in the centre ... which is where geraldsplace is - at an incredibly convenient location in the centre at a leafy peaceful safe and secure street - one of the finest in Edinburgh New Town ; thanks, Gerald
