We stayed here for Hogmanay 2006/07. We were just pleased to have found somewhere that didn't break the bank for this time of year. We booked on a bed and breakfast website and had no idea this place is basically a youth hostel. As other reviewers have said, the place is filthy. Our room was just a little cleaner than... More

We booked for 3 nights a double en suite room and when booking over the phone I had to pay for the first night giving them my credit card details. On arrival we had to pay all the rest, otherwise they wouldn't give us the keys. The staff was very unhelpful and inconsiderate, it was pouring down and we had... More

Stayed at Palmerston Lodge for Hogmanay 2005-6. The entryway is nice looking, but the rooms were nothing like it. They were disgusting; gum on the walls, floor needed vacuuming, broken ladders on the bunk beds. Tried to avoid showering, as the bathrooms were even worse. DO NOT STAY THERE.

Decent location, very nice buuilding and full of character. If looking for a comfortable reasonably priced hostel in edinburgh this would be a great choice.

Staying in West End

Neighborhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighborhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theaters and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
