As anyone who knows me knows, my love of this hotel knows no bounds and I wish it was nearer so I could visit more! I'm delighted to say once again our stay has been perfect. Thanks to Colin for arranging our terrific theatre package to see Wicked (which is amazingly good value) once again the theatre seats were great,...

Where can I start? I booked the theatre package through Colin, the events manager for a few of us back in February to stay and see Wicked at the edinburgh playhouse, as the months went on more people wanted to tag along, I called Colin whom not only arranged the rooms but also the theatre tickets direct from the theatre...

We were lucky enough to stay at The Place for 2 nights in November. Arrival at the hotel could not be easier with the tram stopping directly outside. We were greeted warmly on arrival at reception and they were more than happy to check if our room was ready before check in time, which luckily it was. We were not...

Stayed here for one night over the weekend, hotel decor is lovely, and hotel is well placed for city. Staff were great, all friendly, helpful, polite and courteous. We were able to leave our luggage before our check in time whilst shopping and again after check in until our train journey. Our room was lovely, clean and spacious enough for...

This is a lovely friendly hotel, the staff are very friendly and helpful. Rooms are nice, not huge but big enough. We ate one night and enjoyed it. Menu not large but what we had was lovely. Good breakfast also . The only downside I would say are the stairs, there is no lift so if you can't do stairs...

We didn't chose to stay here - it was because my husband had meetings and the hotel had been selected. As I was on maternity leave, I joined him with our 5 month old daughter and we extended our stay. We arranged with the hotel for a cot to be available in our room and it was ready and waiting...

Two night stay with friends for a theatre break. We were all in various basement rooms -front and back - and had no complaints about noise. However the rooms did seem to vary in size - and facilities. The room I was in had only one bedside table (and not placed between the twin beds) - and no bedside lamps!...

We booked The Place as we were going to the Playhouse, it's about a 3 minute walk. The rooms were very nicely decorated and spotlessly clean. Our room was on the 2nd floor ( no lifts ) at the front but never heard noise from street. The water pressure in the shower could have been better but apart from that...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
