We spent two night here. The room was comfortable and clean and the staff could not do enough for us. The location is ideal for sight seeing and is within easy walking distance of the city centre and shopping/eating areas. Getting here from the airport is very easy - get the tram outside the airport and travel to the terminus... More

Stayed at The Place , which is easily reached by all types of transport , bus station nearby as are car parks and tram stop directly outside the Place. Checking was very smooth and the staff , although busy were only too keen to help , especially since at this time of year when the Festival / Fringe are in... More

This Hotel is in great location just by last tram stop from airport within walking distance of all Edinburgh central attractions. We asked for top floor room (no lift). Clean comfortable room with nice ensuite. Wi fi was free but so so very slow as mentioned by many reviews, we resorted to 3G.

We had two single rooms for two nights which were quite compact but as we only used them to sleep in they were ok. We were there at probably the hottest time during August. The rooms face south so they can get rather warm. Opened the windows and closed the curtains to help with the warmth of these rooms. We... More

Stayed here for 2 nights on our first real visit to Edinburgh for the Fringe. Booked online and to be honest had no real concept of where it was in relation to anything. As it turns out it is very well placed in the new town and, for those going to the Fringe where the Stand comedy venues are. It... More

Well maintained Adequate breakfast options The not so great things No lift, so check before you book. The receptionist did offer to carry my luggage to my room but people with bad knees... More

Terrible room booked for 1 night (thankfully). Unable to even breathe, the room was so hot even though the temperature outside wasn't. Window wired shut which I would say is a fire risk. No air con apart from a fan which we were unable to use as it was so noisy (couldn't even watch tv with it on nevermind sleep).... More

This is a beautiful hotel, 5 minutes from Waverley station and the city centre. I stayed with my 12-year-old boy who was delighted by the unexpected, subtle Harry Potter theme of the room, which was a huge superior twin, very stylish with a beautiful bathroom. The menu was quite small but enough choice. This was a great base for our... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
