I really enjoyed my stay at The Place. It is close to Edinburgh Waverly train station (5 minute walk). There is a light rail stop in front of the hotel (we did not use). We stayed in a room on the lower level, which still provides ample light etc. Modern room with all necessary amenities. Not sure I understand prior... More

We had visited the Place for a cocktail making session a few years ago and were impressed by the trendy bar and reception area so we booked for Saturday night. We parked outside the hotel and were told the parking was just across the road in an NCP car park fee about £15 for 24 hours.. The staff were very... More

One mid-week night stay in The Place - a stylish, comfortable and clean hotel. Handy location for exploring Edinburgh - few minutes walk to Princes Street. Staff were welcoming and helpful. Only 3 stars as - I was on the top floor and there is no lift - while okay for me this wouldn't be for others, had to wait... More

We stayed four nights in a small but clean, comfortable and quiet room below street level. The hotel is very well located. Not only is it just a few minutes walk from Old Town and Princes Street, but it is just across the final stop of the tram from Edinburgh airport. The staff was welcoming and helpful. Only downside for... More

I suspect there may be different levels of rooms. We had a tiny room, barely big enough for the two single beds. Micro bathroom, and access was through several flights of stairs and several manually opened doors, a challenge with luggage. But rooms clean and comfortable, staff very friendly and helpful. Tram stop across the street and central location very... More

This hotel is in a street just away from the busy area, the only drawback is the haul of the luggage up 4 levels. This was hard work with the only help being a young lady who not only was willing but very able. Our room was like an attic but lovely, really enjoyed it. The breakfast was good but... More

We checked into the Place, waited patiently 4 hours for our room. Unbelievable that they would rent a room underground with no windows, no air conditioning, small room couldn't open a suitcase and no wi-fi useable in underground "coffin room". We paid 167 pounds sterling and did not last 1 hour in this supposed 4 star hotel. We found other... More

Very well located near the centre of the city, modern trams stop nearby. Staff very helpful and work hard. But it is an old building, with high ceilings, typical of the Victorian era, about 5 flights from basement to top, but each flight is about 25 steps! Even with staff carrying luggage it was hard work on old knees to... More

The three nights I spent at The Place were very comfortable and I could recommend it. Did not eat in the restaurant so cannot speak to that. Only negative would be that the room was quite small, however, this is common in these old, revamped buildings which are common in Edinburgh. That is not a big deal to me, it's... More

Visited for a work function. The heated terrace was very clean and decorated appropriately for upcoming Wimbledon. The bbq food (although served later than expected) was really good and offered a variety of options. Would have liked more staff to be visible, at times the bar was only staffed by one or two person.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
