Stayed here for two nights at the end of a tour - the hotel is lovely and the location is great. The rooms and bathroom are modern and very clean. This would have a higher rating if it wasn't for the stairs! You have to maneuver so many stairs to get to any of the rooms and they are horrible... More

After a long journey by road we three couples drove into Edinburgh. With extreme difficulty we pulled up outside The Place on a busy road only to be told by staff there was no car park on site. Our van wouldn't fit the car park a block away so we drove the streets for a park. When the six of... More

First when you walk in looks nice and glam. Very contemporary and welcoming. Checked in, staff were very friendly and made sure we felt welcome. Didn't get told check out time so had to call down in morning. Lovely comfy bar area, prices a bit expensive but great place to relax and chill at ease. Room was very spacious but... More

Only a short walk from Waverley Station after travelling on the sleeper, and staff were very helpful when we wanted to leave our bags at 8am. The room was large, with excellent, panoramic views across the New Town to the Firth of Forth and beyond. It was also very peaceful, with no traffic noise and minimal sound from other visitors... Yes, a mixture of good and annoying. I'll start with the annoying. Like many others found, the stairs were a nightmare. We are both pensioners, and getting a heavy case up over 60 stairs was awful, particularly the narrow, winding stairs up to our attic room (3422). The hotel really needs a lift - the stairs, to a certain extent,... More

Staying on the third floor had its perks but the amount of stairs was not one of those! The view from our room was spectacular but the room itself was very awkward to move around in as the roof was very low and there was very little space.

Had a lovely weekend in spacious rooms with our friends. Breakfast included, just at the end of the tram route from the airport and not far from restaurants and bars. Everyone very friendly and helpful. Would stay again. If you can't climb stairs you'll be in troubles there isn't a lift!

I stayed in one of the basement rooms as it was all they had available, described as cosy...........no window, but a velux window that could be opened with a remote control. Only snag was when it was open it was incredibly noisy, kitchen sounds, tram and traffic noise etc. If it was shut - silence but the room got incredibly... More

Travel light if you are residing here or ask for lower floors. Many stairs! Which can be arduous task to climb up the steps if your luggage are heavy. Friendly, but non-intrusive staff. We were barely in the first few days of our trip when we visited the Place. Quiet place, along the whole stretch of street lined with boutique... More

yes the standard room had a great view but you are required to walk up 70 stairs every time you re enter the room.the size of the standard room is small the bathroom is a good size.the room was stuffy with only a small opening in the window.perhaps a larger room on a lower floor may provide a higher rating.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
