My daughter entered a competition on Facebook for a Mothers Day overnight stay at The Fiddlers Elbow in Picardy Place, Edinburgh. On our arrival we were made very welcome by the staff and shown to our room which was on the top floor with stunning views towards the Forth. We then headed to the bar and all drinks £2.50. For...

We got this hotel through a voucher deal. When we arrived we were met by the staff and shown to our room which was due to be at the top of the hotel. When my wife said she had arthritis, we got shown to Room number 1 to make it easier. It was really clean and faced onto the main...

My niece, who's 3, could have made a better meal. Only about 3 drinks on tap & even the first pint was off. Toilets not much nicer either. Terrible. Avoid like the plague. Shame as it used to be nice.

Myself and my partner stayed here on the 9th of December after booking a deal through wowcher for an over nigh stay with bed and breakfast. Partner booked this through a groupon deal for two nights inc dinner and breakfast. Having stayed in some of the best hotels in Edinburgh, was a bit nervous after reading the comments left on here. However, we had a great stay. The rooms were very clean and quirky. Yes there is a climb to the rooms, yes its very noisy...

Arrived in Edinburgh on Friday afternoon, having booked a two night stay at this hotel a few months before. We were extremely disappointed, not to mention angry, having driven over 300 miles, to learn that the hotel did not have our booking. Apparently, the hotel was under new management, the previous owner had gone bust and the current owners were...

Booked a table for two for 6 p.m. last Thursday courtesy of a Groupon voucher. When my friend and I arrived the pub was extremely busy and very noisy. OK, it was Thursday late night shopping - but the clientele were not all shoppers and were primarily young drinkers. To get us a table, a member of staff had to...

Came here for a three course meal and wasnt impressed at all. The rather large teleision was on and there was no music or ambience. The starters came with soggy salad which was very off putting and the goujons were prettly tatstless. My main of macaroni had no flavour either but did enjoy my dessert. The service was good but...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
