We were pleasantly surprised to arrive at this ultra-modern Residence Inn within walking distance of the National Museum and the Castle. Extremely well equipped room with easy access, great WiFi and flat screen TV. Super beds and bathroom!

we stayed here before dropping off our son at the university. The hotel is very modern, part of the very stylish redevelopment of the Royal Infirmary site. (The development is not finished, so one might think that there would be noise etc. from construction, but that was not our experience at all.) This means that the hotel's location was excellent... We stayed here for the first weekend in September. Great hotel. Room was a decent size with a kitchenette. My only complaint was there were no utensils but we didn't call the front desk to ask since we had our own. Room was quiet. The hotel is in an off-the-beat path but we had no problem walking to Edinburgh Castle... More

My husband and I stayed here for two nights in July. The location is good for walking to all the sights. This is much nicer and more modern than the ones stateside. The room was very spacious with a king bed and sofa and chair. The small kitchenette was nice. The room and bathroom were very clean. Our adaptor broke... More

Stayed here two nights and then returned for another at the end of our trip. Great and safe location near the university, lots of good restaurants and convenient to the Royal Mile and Edinburgh sites. Good breakfast, comfortable beds, large functional room, great shower; add a most helpful staff and you've got it all for a good hotel.

We've been here for a week. The location of this hotel is very good. 10 minutes by walk into the centre. Under the hotel you have Sainsbury's, if you need to buy anything. Peter's Yard in the next block is great for breakfast, and lunch soups. Very nice place. There were issues with the card, as we used them in... More

Simply a first class experience! My daughter and I visited Edinburgh for 3 nights at the end of a longer Eurpean holiday. We picked the Residence Inn because of our comfort with Marriott's properties and its excellent location (very close to the heart of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival). From the moment we arrived, it was clear we made a great... More

Staff were friendly & helpful, self service breakfast, hot & cold, was good & the hotel is in a good location. Not too far to walk to the city centre & nearby secure parking make it ideal! The only downside was that the room was really hot. There was a fan already in the room though which was greatly appreciated.

We stayed at this amazing spot during the Fringe Festival. The location is FANTASTIC. Quartermile is just a great spot to stay - a real old meets new and super hip. The staff went above and beyond from start to finish. The breakfast was better than anything I've ever seen in the UK. There's a great local bakery for lunch... More

This hotel is a great option for family and friends traveling together. The location can't be beat and there are plenty of places to eat and stores in easy walking distance. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms are spacious with big beds which are very comfortable. There was also a kitchenette and couch in the room. The... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighborhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighborhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
