Myself and a friend stayed here for one night in the twin room and can highly recommend. The hotel is superb value for money, very clean, friendly, welcoming, lovely breakfast. The only criticism is that the bathroom was a wee bit dated but overall im not sure this is anything to write home about as it was very clean and...

Stayed at this beautiful old house for two nights and will DEFINITELY be returning! It has a very impressive façade and faces out onto a small park with lovely views. It is also in a great location as you are out of the main hustle and bustle of the city centre but within a short walking distant to all of...

Charming quiet location, but sufficiently central to get to everything. Even walkable from the station, if you have a wheeled suitcase. Room rather small but facing a lovely back garden, rising up a hill. Bathroom a bit dated. Breakfast excellent and lovely sitting room for guests on first floor. No lift. Friendly proprietor. No TV in room, which is stated...

Thanks Gilly, delighted you had a great stay. We are only a very short walk to the city centre. People are amazed you can stay on a street like Royal Terrace and be so close to all the action! Hope to see you again soon. with kind regards Patricia and Matthew

What a fantastic find! The main drawback was that my friend and I had a room on the top floor which, with no lift, was significant as I have osteoarthritis in my knees and almost threatened to spoil my break. Don't book with Lastrooms.com as they were more interested in my booking rather than my comfort! I definitely needed a...

We had an amazing time in Edinburgh a few weekends ago and the Halcyon Hotel certainly played its part. A beautiful old building to begin with, the Halcyon has a certain old world charm to it. They have a back garden that is just beautiful, and once the leaves fall an incredible view. I also have to mention the breakfast,...

We lucked out with a very large, spotless, well-appointed room on the ground floor when my husband and I were in the city for his reunion at the University of Edinburgh. It turned out to be an excellent location for us. The proprietor was charming and very helpful with getting us an early morning taxi on our day of departure...

Hi Debbie Glad you had a lovely stay and felt you had 'lucked' out! :) Our offer is very different to the standard hotel chain, we like the personal family run hotel approach... cosy, nothing is a problem and big hearty breakfast... Hope to see you again soon. with kind regards Patricia and Matthew

I first stayed at the Halcyon in 2013 and did not hesitate to book there again when I knew I would be heading to Edinburgh. It meets all my requirements - clean, comfortable, convenient and quiet - but also ticks other boxes such as affordable with friendly and courteous service. I stayed in a double/twin room with en suite both...

We checked into Halcyon relatively late, and we still greeted with a friendly smile. We received the key to our room, and since this was both my boyfriend and my first B&B stay, we didn't know to expect. Well, we were pleasantly surprised - the room was huge! It had 3 beds in total, 2 twins and one full (I...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
