We were allocated a room on the top floor which meant walking up & down 69 steps. Window in the room was broken & patched with a piece of paper. From reviews on Booking.com, this seems to have been like this for quite some time. We had no hot water during our first night & the next morning. Wi-fi was... More

First time visitor to Edinburgh and wanted somewhere quite central for work purposes. Stayed at the Ballentrae west end for two nights. The initial greeting was friendly and I was taken to my room. I booked for a single but was given a room with 2 single beds, a double and a pop up bed too. It was huge for... More

The hotel is in a great location 5 minutes from Haymarket train station and in walking distance of the town centre. The room was nice and clean, very quiet, we slept well. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The only downside is the breakfast, a bit basic and the service needs improving but for £5 it's not too bad.

I needed somewhere to stash my luggage, a bed and a shower. This place had them and it was good for what it was. And you can easily walk to many of Edinburgh's attractions from there (this was the main reason I booked this hotel). My main gripes are stairs (no elevator) and decaf sachets of coffee. Otherwise I liked... More

Me and my girlfriend had a room booked there and spent a little bit of time planning our day and night in Edinburgh. We arrived at the hotel to fins the reception was stunning. We then went to our room and it was tiny and dirty. We thought ok its one night and gave them the benefit of the doubt.... More

I stayed for one night with my partner for her birthday . The location is about three minutes to the Haymarket tram station and is positioned on a quiet little road just behind the West End . If you wanted a walk into the city centre it was about 15 minutes away so location wise it was good. It's about... More

I stayed here with my boyfriend for one night for a rugby international. As he pointed out, because of the location, they don't need to try. On arrival other guests told us to ring the bell and be prepared to 'take root' whilst waiting for someone to check us in. To be fair, a lovely girl came quickly and did... More

Given the price of this hotel, and its location, it's hard to be too fussy. Having said that, I think blood on the duvet, a rocking toilet, and filthy carpet are unacceptable even for this price. If you're staying 1 night then you could probably get away with it. Anymore than 1 night and you're going to feel pretty uncomfortable!... More

My boyfriend and I stayed last month as I recently got a new job in Edinburgh and it happened to be our anniversary. We were very kindly upgraded to the Honeymoon Suite which was very large with a fireplace and a 'living area'. The room was relatively basic, but had everything we needed, so I can't fault it at all.... More

Staying in West End

Neighborhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighborhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theaters and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
