Stayed here for 3 nights during my visit to Edinburgh. The hostel is a bit hard to find. The room was neat. However, the Wi-Fi connectivity for 3rd floor was poor. Good to have free breakfast. Recommend to travelers which have a tight budget.

i arrived here with 5 other friends expecting, as with all hostels, for basic accommodation. The man on reception (seemed like the manager) was very friendly on arrival. Unfortunately the pleasantries stopped there. Our room had no bunk beds, it was simply 6 mattresses in a room with no ventilation. The windows were nailed shut... The heating didn't work upon... There are a lot of scathing reviews about the staff but our group (6 people) found them to be quite friendly. The bottom line for this place is to honestly avoid if at all possible. It's somewhat cheap but missing a lot of what I consider to be the basics. The beds were OK, the bar was lively and fun,... More

I'm not one to leave negative reviews... but this place is AWFUL!!!!! The blonde owner is extremely rude and the managers there are very very untrustworthy people. Had my phone stolen and my deposit was not returned. £100 a week is a lot of money for a bed on the floor and sharing with 10 people. This is the long... More

Staff smoking in corridors, random drunk people and cheap decorations. Health and safety is something not present at all times. Showers were very dirty, no hot water as well. Never ever will stay there again!!!

I only wish I'm able to give a 5.5 star rating, the 5 stars were for my wholly enjoyable and memorable stay the extra half star for the forward thinking clever initiatives subtly put in place by the Caledonian Backpackers management. My favourite of which being the outreach programme between the hostel and a small Eastern European village where in... More

So a group of us stayed here for 4 nights over new years and it definitely left a lot to be desired. We were supposed to be in a 38 bed dorm (which was fine cause we were a big group and took up most of the space) but they somehow managed to put an extra 2 bunk beds in... More

DON'T. I wish I could give less than one star. I have been in quite a few hostels but this one was by far the worst. There has apparently been a change in management (the new management is terrible) and the whole place was still under construction and not taking care of at all. There were sigarets on the floor... If you are looking for hostels to stay in the city centre, please please PLEASE do NOT book this hostel because it is absolutely horrible. First of all, the entrance to the hostel is creepy and it had a wooden block at the front door that almost EVERYONE who passed by almost tripped over including myself. Secondly, the rooms (basically... More

Staying in West End

Neighborhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighborhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theaters and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
