We booked a 3 night stay and were given room 5, ground floor room with garden views, and were delighted! The managers were so friendly and helpful and lovely to talk to. The breakfast was absolutely fab!! Our room was spotlessly clean as was our en-suite. Had a great sleep in a lovely comfy bed. The location is perfect for...

We really enjoyed our stay in Abbey hotel. Not only the location but also the reasonable price and spacious rooms are big plus. The hosts were extremely friendly and kind. I absolutely love the breakfast and the terrace where we had our tea. Highly recommended.

As the title says, friendly and caring people. Clean rooms, excellent level of service. Could not be more helpful. The choice of breakfast should be enough to satisfy all who choose to stay at here. The quality of the food too was excellent. Thank you.

The hotel is clean and tidy but as with a lot of hotels some areas may need a bit of a freshen up but nothing major. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel is in a nice location not too far out from Princess Street, a nice 10 min walk. A little busy at breakfast as it finishes at...

We have stayed in Royal Terrace (a few doors along) before and really like the central position and the grandeur of the houses; then we paid £120 for a double, at the Abbey we only paid £85. Same grand frontage, elegant dining room and a great breakfast for less money! Also use of the charming garden sloping up to Calton...

We spent three nights in this small hotel and were very satisfied. Very kind and helpful staff and a great location within walking distance to most of Edinburgh's sights. The rooms are simple, but clean and with comfortable beds. The breakfast is typical for the country.

Stayed at Abbey Hotel for 3 nights. Arrived by train and the hotel was only a 10 minute walk away. The reception staff were very friendly and advised us of the best places to eat which we tried and were not disappointed. Stayed in room 9 which was very spacious, big bathroom and walk-in wardrobe. It overlooked the rear garden...

My family and I stayed here for 2 nights. The property is well maintained. The room was spacious and clean. The breakfast was excellent. We also enjoyed talking with the owners which was great. It is a bit of a walk for the Royal Mile but not that far.

We chose this property because it was the least expensive for the particular date we wanted. We had meetings to attend and booked in for 1 night. We weren't expecting much since there seemed to be mixed reviews online. The Abbey Hotel is in a terrific location; just minutes walk from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, but...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
