3 nights here. Very good location next to Caldon hill green area with outstanding city views. Not on a busy street and rooms in rear have full views of the green area. Very good breakfast staff. Very large room #9 with 15' ceilings but the windows don't open for fresh air so it can get a bit stuffy. Cost is... More

We drove up to Edinburgh thinking as it was September we would get a room easy. Not so we booked this Hotel at the information centre near the railway station. After a long search. We found this hotel and were able to park outside. The guy on the reception told us we had got the last room. He showed us... More

Booked here at short notice. After receiving key I went down to room. WoW is the word for how disgusting the bedding was there was stains all over it, plus I had to kill 5 bluebottles before checking rest of room. Never again will I come here. I am glad that they wanted a cash transaction in the morning as... More

Thank you for your review..but we are a bit confused as why you stayed if it was bad. We wash all bedding in house and if you thought it wasn`t clean all you had to do is say and we would have gladly changed it for you. As for blue bottles...that also confuses us as we have never seen one... More

Positive points: central position, only 10 minutes walk to the heart of the city; restaurants and a Tesco nearby, very friendly staff, good wifi, clean and large room, and breakfast with continental (little option) or cooked on demand versions (I liked their porridge). And staff, I want to tell it twice! Negative points: No elevator, the triple room has a... More

A charming hotel within walking distance of Edinburgh City centre, Waverley Station, City Sightseeing Tours, restaurants etc but be warned Edinburgh is built on a hill which needs to be negotiated. There are, however, bus stops at the end of the road. The hotel itself is a Georgian Town House built around 1820 and doesn't have the convenience of a... More

We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights. The hotel is relatively close/within walking distance to the Edinburgh bus station, Rabbie's meeting point and the North Bridge/Princes Street. It is up a small hill, so careful with your luggage! There are several restaurants nearby, as well as a Tesco express. The room was spacious and clean. From my point of... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
