This was our first time in Edinburgh, Scotland . We leave here in the morning, and am so sad to be leaving . The Principal has been a real find for us . It's in a great location , the hotel is lovely and the staff couldn't be nicer . You can walk to the hotel from the bus station...

Me and my partner spend 1 night here in February 2017. Requested an upgrade as we were traveling for a special occasion. We were not disappointed. Unfortunately the upgrade from provided had some very noisy neighbours and therefore we had to request to move at 10pm at night. Hotel was fantastic and moved us to a suite straight away. Breakfast...

I spent 4 nights at The Principal in February half term. Check in was a breeze and was told that I had been upgraded, although I was surprised that they took £50 per night from my credit card to cover extras. This was refunded on check out. The staff are lovely and extremely knowledgeable about the city and how to...

Excellent location and comfortable attractive room (overbath shower). Free snacks in room a nice touch. Ongoing refurbishment in public areas - though didn't prove to be a problem. Standouts - friendly helpful hotel staff, convenient casual coffee shop attached to hotel - good for quick breakfast etc.and very central for access to cultural attractions and shopping

Three nights at this hotel for a conference. The first thing you notice is how welcoming the staff are and his continued throughout the stay. My room was small but very well appointed with a good sized bathroom with bath and rain shower. Quality toiletries, if you could get the lids off them, which on occasion I could not, even...

The hotel reception and public areas are lovely but as you move towards the bedrooms it's narrow and grey. Only view from the bedroom window was into the building next door. The hotel was very nice but the breakfast service was a waste of time. We were seated in the middle of two tables at the very back (up on...

We loved the Principal, better known as the George. We had a lovely suite that was comfortable and private. The coffee shop was excellent with a great location and a very short walk from Waverly train station and all of the sites in city. Peter, the concierge was extremely helpful in helping us plan a day trip to St Andrews...

As a regular visitor I highly recommend the Principle Edinburgh. Very comfortable rooms , great food and bar, and wonderful staff. Ideally situated on George St to access nearly bars and restaurants and shopping on Prince's St. Always a home from home and cannot recommend it highly enough.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Principal Hotel in Edinburgh. The room refurbishments have been done very tastefully. There are some nice touches like bottles of water and real milk in the fridge instead of UHT milk, plus a tuck box with crisps and chocolate biscuits in the room. The breakfast was excellent. The staff were all very helpful....

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
