The location couldn't be better. A short stroll to Princes St. Great for shopping and sightseeing. The open top bus is just a few minutes walk and the old city just a little further uphill. We stayed during the fringe festival and attended a play in the hotel which included a three course dinner. It was excellent. Our room was... More

Lovely hotel, GREAT location. Our room was small and very impractically furnished - NO drawer space! We were bumping into our luggage for three days..... Ideal location for good restaurants and seeing the sights. Coffee shop connected to the hotel, too.

Very pleased with the assitance I received from Cameron at Reception yesterday, in sorting out a room at short notice for me to use when meeting people briefly to run through some documents. Much appreciated - thanks, Cameron Sorry I couldn't do more than say a brief thanks when I left as i was in a hurry and you were... More

Centrally located within walking distance of all sights ,this is a high standard ,efficient hotel for both business and pleasure. Staff are efficient and friendly. Room was large and well laid out ,bathroom cramped but ok,corridors ramble a bit . Parking not good and has to be about 10 minutes walk away which on a nice day is OK which... More

We liked the George very much the location is excellent and the staff are extremely helpful, friendly and efficient. However the room we had was very small but tastefully furnished although it would be better if it had a couple of chairs. It did lack drawers which I believe are necessary as we had to keep items in our suitcases.... More

I have stayed in The George several times and always found it welcoming and friendly. In my opinion when you compare it to most of the similar quality hotels in Edinburgh you get real value for money. The location couldn't be better. If you are sight seeing most attractions are in easy walking distance. George street is fantastic for both... More

We were upgraded to a suite and it was a beauty! Great facilities and a terrific bar and cafe. Excellent service! A lot of staff who spoke and understood little English which resulted in some misunderstandings was the only minor issue during our stay.

Perfect location. We could walk to the Visitor Center, mall, and the hop on hop off bus dropped us off just down a block. Parking is only allowed for a short time on George St, but there is a car park within a 10 minute walk. You can drop off your luggage and go park the car. The George had... More

My husband and I enjoyed staying at The George while visiting Edinburgh during the Tatoo. The room was very spacious and had a very comfortable bed and pillows. The bathroom was also very modern and large. The breakfast buffet with full English breakfast was excellent. If I were ever in Edinburgh again I would definitely stay there.

Very recommendable; nice staff, nice bar, very central; quiet location; nice restaurants nearby; breakfast fully adequate; just in a parallel street to the main shopping street of Edinburgh; the people are very open; don`t hesitate to ask for directions, etc.

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
