Had a really nice comfortable room and because of the lousy weather at the time we used the internal entrance to the shopping mall. How very convenient. We had dinner/ lnch/ bed and breakfast at this hotel and could not fault it. The restaurant is more like a frendly family place to eat than an upmarket place. Food is good...

The location is good, the rooms are large, the breakfats is OK, and acutually just like everything else in this hotel, it's ok. Next door is the mall, which can be convenient. Try to get a room on backside of the hotel, it's a lot more quiet

The first place I have stayed in Edinburgh that's not exhorbitant and I would actually return to (I have grandchildren in Edinburgh and visit frequently). A rather austere and incongruous facade within the beauty of Edinburgh but inside its fine. Absolutely perfect location next to John Lewis and a few steps from Harvey Nicks .... Need I say more! Only...

Close to Princes Street and the theatre this hotel is very well situated, with the added bonus of being able to park by the front door or in the neighbouring NCP. Room was small despite being called Deluxe. There was some street noise but nothing too bad. Lots of eating places round about so we did not use the restaurant.

+ Great location, + Reasonable rates + Good breakfast, very extensive - Very out dated location and rooms, like sleeping at your grandma's place. - Real hot rooms and as it was very nosy at the front of the hotel due to lots of traffic it was no option to open the window. - Staff was not very friendly and...

The Thistle is ideally situated for shopping or enjoying the sights. The hotel is ok but the room we stayed in needed a little attention to detail. Some of the skirting board paintwork could have been freshened up and in the bathroom things like rusty shower curtain pole, screws left sticking out where a telephone in the bathroom used to...

Stayed with my girlfriend for a weekend on our first visit to Edinburgh. The room is nice and spacious, and the hotel is vary well located in the city centre. You can easily walk to the castle, the palace, the parliament, the park, the stores, etc. On the negative side, the hotel had just one lift working and know one...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
