I loved this hotel. The room was huge for a standard room. I loved being able to open the windows at night for some fresh air and the sound of sea gulls. When I came in from the rain, I felt cozy in the Scotsman bathrobe and I used the pants press and the iron to dry my damp clothes.... More

On the 30th June we arrived in Edinburgh for a two day break. We had chosen The Scotsman because of its central location and interesting previous life (It used to be the offices of The Scotsman newspaper). We had booked through British Airways. When we arrived we were told our booking had been cancelled due to flooding in the hotel... More

We have been to the Edinburgh Festival a few times and thought we would try a different hotel this time. All looked good from the website however we were very disappointed on arrival. The theme of the dark and tired lobby continued through to our room - dark, small, poorly lit and musty - rather like a scene from a... More

Excellent stay in a wonderful hotel. We have travelled all over the world and stayed in excellent properties, however the superb staff at the Scotsman were above and beyond 5 star service. After reading some reviews we were interested to see the true colours of the hotel, but I can recommend this property as 5 stars. We had a two level... More

The Scotsman Hotel is a beautiful building located in the hart of Edinburgh city. First impressions of the lobby was of a 4 star hotel, then from entering the lift it all went down hill from there. The lifts & halls are tired but not as much as the bedroom. When shown our room I was expecting Jeremy Beadle to... More

I really wanted to love this hotel but have mixed feelings From our arrival there were a number of frustrations which when you are tired you don’t need. We stayed on two occasions, a week apart. The location is excellent – the hotel is adjacent to the Waverley train station and there is an excellent lift system from the station... More

The Scotsman is a very well located luxury, old world hotel just off the royal mile. You can walk to any attraction and there are many restaurants nearby. The hotel restaurant is quite nice. They do a lovely breakfast for hotel guests and nice Scottish meals at lunch and dinner. The rooms are a bit old but spacious and have... More

Celebrating a special occasion we stayed at the Scotsman hotel last Saturday evening and were extremely impressed. We arrived in Edinburgh fairly early and our room was not ready yet so we decided to have something to eat in the main hotel bar/brasserie. This is a lovely room to spend some time in and have something to eat or drink.... More

Have wanted to stay here for a long time, but felt the experience was disappointing and the hotel just isnt 5*. The building is great, but the additional touches you expect for 5* (and even some 4*) were lacking. This hotel may tick the boxes for a tourist board or AA 5*, but there is room for improvement. Our editors... More

We chose this hotel for its central location and iconic history as the previous home of The Scotsman newspaper. It is listed as one of Edinburgh's 5 star hotels. Unfortunately, our experience there was poor and I would agree with previous reviewers on two counts. Firstly, the level of intrusiveness of the staff was quite astonishing. Constant inappropriate questioning seemed... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Scotsman Hotel, resides within the former Scotsman Newspaper building. Originally built in 1905, this majestic building was designed to dominate the Edinburgh skyline and features incredible views of the city´s most famous landmarks. In 2001 the building was transformed into The Scotsman Hotel with careful attention towards preserving the magnificent Italian marble staircase, stunning oak panelling, imposing marble pillars and ornate ceilings.Originally the reception room of the newspaper, our North Bridge Bar and Brasserie features the original oak panelling, a hand carved wooden balcony and imposing marble pillars. The seating area is split into two levels with the balcony offering quieter, intimate seating, with a birds-eye-view below to the buzzing main restaurant and cocktail bar.The newspaper held its giant printing presses in the lower ground floor. The press room now houses our Scotsman Health Club and Spa with a vast state of the art gym. Popular with locals and hotel guests alike. Facilities include a steel swimming pool, steam and sauna, tropicarium, 60-station gym, spa treatment rooms and a relaxation suite. With no two alike, our 69 rooms and suites each have their own quirky features including curved corner window bays with breathtaking views and marble bathrooms and as a guest at The luxury 5 star Scotsman you will enjoy free Wi-Fi access and a complimentary Scotsman Newspaper. ... more   less
