The Scotsman is a hotel with real character and the staff are fabulous. This was my second stay at this hotel and I loved it as much this time as before. I love the fact it is a converted Newspaper building and you see the clues all the way through the hotel. It all feels very classy - lots of... More

Stopped for a drink in the Scotsman on the way back to our hotel. Very relaxed atmosphere. Not outrageously expensive, lots of people in and out, seemed a good place to meet people for drinks. Might be a lot to stay there, but was a nice treat over an anniversary weekend. Staff were friendly as well, making a change.

My granddaughter and I were spending an overnight in Edinburgh this week and I was able to book a night at The Scotsman. We arrived by train and Waverly Station is just across Market St. There is a special entrance to the hotel at this level--just press the button and they release the lock. Reception is on the 4th floor... More

This is a very friendly hotel in a great location for both the old town and the Princess Street area - all within easy walking distance. This boutique hotel has loads of character from its days as The Scotsman newspaper so there is plenty of historic wood paneling and marble stair cases. The room we had, on the 5th floor... More

The Scotsman is an excellent hotel. Extremely well located in the Royal Mile. This location allows to go walking to the main tourist sites. We had a very comfortable room with a very nice view. The hotel has a very good restaurant and an excellent room service. The staff is very helpful.

Took my Mum for a leisure day with afternoon tea for her birthday. She had a massage which she thoroughly enjoyed while I tried out the unfortunately quite dated gym. Enough equipment for a one off visit but I wouldn't recommend a membership. The pool area, although impractically dark creates a relaxing atmosphere with an enjoyable jacuzzi and sauna (the... More

We stayed in room 901, on the top floor and were treated to great views of the castle and Calton Hill. They have turned the old printing press area into the spa and fitness center so even if you're not a fitness buff, well worth the visit to see. The hotel and lounges have wonderful marble and the restaurant has... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Scotsman Hotel, resides within the former Scotsman Newspaper building. Originally built in 1905, this majestic building was designed to dominate the Edinburgh skyline and features incredible views of the city´s most famous landmarks. In 2001 the building was transformed into The Scotsman Hotel with careful attention towards preserving the magnificent Italian marble staircase, stunning oak panelling, imposing marble pillars and ornate ceilings.Originally the reception room of the newspaper, our North Bridge Bar and Brasserie features the original oak panelling, a hand carved wooden balcony and imposing marble pillars. The seating area is split into two levels with the balcony offering quieter, intimate seating, with a birds-eye-view below to the buzzing main restaurant and cocktail bar.The newspaper held its giant printing presses in the lower ground floor. The press room now houses our Scotsman Health Club and Spa with a vast state of the art gym. Popular with locals and hotel guests alike. Facilities include a steel swimming pool, steam and sauna, tropicarium, 60-station gym, spa treatment rooms and a relaxation suite. With no two alike, our 69 rooms and suites each have their own quirky features including curved corner window bays with breathtaking views and marble bathrooms and as a guest at The luxury 5 star Scotsman you will enjoy free Wi-Fi access and a complimentary Scotsman Newspaper. ... more   less
