We arrived at The Scotsman after a long day touring and apart from a small hitch with our booking which the front desk amended fairly quickly we were gobsmacked with this hotel. The décor of tall marble columns in the bar and dining area brings you back to the heady days of old when everything was grand! Service impeccable, food... More

We booked an “executive room” for one night at the Scotsman as we arrived in town to watch the military Tattoo event on Saturday 13th late evening. Scotsman’s location proved perfect, being just 15 min. walk away from the Castle.  Upon arrival, in the early afternoon, we were assigned room nr. 704 and we could settle in immediately.  Staff was... Staff were friendly and professional and food in restaurant was delicious. Our room, 702, while “tired”, had a good layout . I rated the hotel so low because we had a problem with the room that was not handled well -- certainly not even handled well for a 3 star hotel. Our room had a terrible odor – like a... More

I will neber be able to afford to stay in this hotel, but would like to thank the staff who let me sit down and gave me a glass of water when I had an asthma attack this afternoon. It really helped, and I was able to get to the Fringe performance I had booked.

When we checked into this hotel, we were taken to a room that was dingy and old looking. I immediately asked for a better room, it was my husband's birthday trip and the hotel was rated well. The concierge, Barry, was excellent and showed me two other rooms to choose from. I chose one. On our way out to dinner,... More

We had a lovely time here using the spa facilities and had afternoon tea. A first class service with delicious food and drink. Special thanks to Lindsay and her staff in the spa who were excellent and made the experience even better. Looking forward to going back soon

Just landed today and checked in to this wonderful old monument of a hotel. Great views of the town square and castles and churches from our bedroom window. Prompt and friendly service. Hope this experience continues till we check out of this beautiful city

We just stayed for one night and chose an Executive Double which was £230 for the night. I was a little disappointed with the room as it was rather tired and dated looking, but then again reasonably priced considering it is in the centre of a capital city. Tired it may have been, but oh my word, what amazing panoramic... More

I stayed here last spring as a single female traveler and quite honestly it was a fantastic experience. First of all, you can't beat the location, it's directly across the street from the train station, so it's within walking distance of any kind of tour you'd like to take. Most of the major pickup points were five minutes or less... More

The Scotsman Hotel has a convenient and central location to the Royal Mile, shopping, major attractions, museums and Waverly Station. It was an easy walk to most attractions. We spent three nights in Edinburgh before heading out to by car to explore Scotland. This historic building formally housed a newspaper and is quite interesting. Our room was spacious, clean and... Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Scotsman Hotel, resides within the former Scotsman Newspaper building. Originally built in 1905, this majestic building was designed to dominate the Edinburgh skyline and features incredible views of the city´s most famous landmarks. In 2001 the building was transformed into The Scotsman Hotel with careful attention towards preserving the magnificent Italian marble staircase, stunning oak panelling, imposing marble pillars and ornate ceilings.Originally the reception room of the newspaper, our North Bridge Bar and Brasserie features the original oak panelling, a hand carved wooden balcony and imposing marble pillars. The seating area is split into two levels with the balcony offering quieter, intimate seating, with a birds-eye-view below to the buzzing main restaurant and cocktail bar.The newspaper held its giant printing presses in the lower ground floor. The press room now houses our Scotsman Health Club and Spa with a vast state of the art gym. Popular with locals and hotel guests alike. Facilities include a steel swimming pool, steam and sauna, tropicarium, 60-station gym, spa treatment rooms and a relaxation suite. With no two alike, our 69 rooms and suites each have their own quirky features including curved corner window bays with breathtaking views and marble bathrooms and as a guest at The luxury 5 star Scotsman you will enjoy free Wi-Fi access and a complimentary Scotsman Newspaper. ... more   less
