Stayed here on a number of occasions. The rooms are great with plenty of space and some rather smart touches. Ordered room service this time and the fries came with the most peculiar coating which left a slightly unpleasant after taste. Sandwiches were great though. Staff are great and happy to help on pretty much anything. Only downside (apart from... More

Entrance to the hotel is through a public walkway where people are hanging out and smoking - not impressive. Check-in was fine and the employees do really care and try hard. The problem is that the place needs significant upgrading. We paid a 5-star price for a 3-star room. Carpet is threadbare and really dirty around the entire perimeter (red... More

The house is pretty historical, but the rooms are very nice and modern. However, the AC did not work and it was very warm during the night. As a German I hate to say - I miss toilet brushes in the bathrooms. Also to place the intercom directly above the toilet was not very practical. A part from these the... More

Wonderfully historic hotel 5 minutes from the train station and walking distance to most attractions, restaurants/pubs and shopping. Local transit buses are also an option as they pass the hotel. The building's architecture is beautiful and the carved wood framework in the lobby is amazing. Staff were all very helpful and very friendly. Very clean rooms with modern bathroom facilities.... Our stay at the Scotsman has been the last leg of a nice UK holiday, and the hotel is just terrific! Check in was wonderful, and by the way we had to add an additional night which was seamlessly accommodated quite promptly via email. The front desk was courteous and helpful. Our bellman was also very attentive and thoughtful....arranging for... More

Having made the reservation through booking.com. We arrived in the evening and were given a room with no curtains facing another building. This meant that we had absolutely no privacy. The only solution was to close the blind curtains, it was like being in a dark cave! I requested a room change but the hotel was full. Finally, we got... More

Spent a little less than three weeks in the United Kingdom, and of all the hotels and cities I stayed in, The Scotsman and Edinburgh was the best. Excellent staff, room, view, and food. Located right next to the train station, and perfect for exploring the city. 5 Star experience

The check-in was rather slow, which was frustrating since we'd been flying for 14 hours and just wanted a nap. Said they would rush our room, but in fact checked in 3 others before us. We had lunch in the restaurant while we waited, the service by the wait staff was very slow--our cocktails did not arrive until halfway through... More

Return visit for afternoon tea at this very Scottish Hotel. Smart without being stuffy or unwelcoming. Lovely tea, sandwiches, cakes and scones it this very smart hotel. The only thing that let the experience down was the wait for the bill (had to chase it up), I know it's a little issue but when you're ready to go the bill... More

Just a quick note. Loved this hotel and its gothic feel, like stepping back in time and the staff were great. Fantastic location, great food, much preferred it to the Balmoral. Very grand in places with great views over the castle.

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Scotsman Hotel, resides within the former Scotsman Newspaper building. Originally built in 1905, this majestic building was designed to dominate the Edinburgh skyline and features incredible views of the city´s most famous landmarks. In 2001 the building was transformed into The Scotsman Hotel with careful attention towards preserving the magnificent Italian marble staircase, stunning oak panelling, imposing marble pillars and ornate ceilings.Originally the reception room of the newspaper, our North Bridge Bar and Brasserie features the original oak panelling, a hand carved wooden balcony and imposing marble pillars. The seating area is split into two levels with the balcony offering quieter, intimate seating, with a birds-eye-view below to the buzzing main restaurant and cocktail bar.The newspaper held its giant printing presses in the lower ground floor. The press room now houses our Scotsman Health Club and Spa with a vast state of the art gym. Popular with locals and hotel guests alike. Facilities include a steel swimming pool, steam and sauna, tropicarium, 60-station gym, spa treatment rooms and a relaxation suite. With no two alike, our 69 rooms and suites each have their own quirky features including curved corner window bays with breathtaking views and marble bathrooms and as a guest at The luxury 5 star Scotsman you will enjoy free Wi-Fi access and a complimentary Scotsman Newspaper. ... more   less
