Stayed in the hotel for 2 nights as a little treat before becoming parents. It was quick and easy to check in and the staff at the front desk were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was included in our package and was pretty good, although I’m not sure if it would be worth the £18pp as advertised. We never got to try the surf and turf restaurant but it did look very nice. The room was nice and the location is excellent for getting into the town centre. The tv in our room didn’t work, but a helpful man came to have a look at it and, although he was unable to fix it, moved our room to one with a working tv. He also offered to help me move our things, which I thought was a very kind gesture. My girlfriend went for a pregnancy massage which she loved and we went for a swim together after - I couldn’t fault the swimming facilities at all and we both had a nice swim. We did have to book this due to covid limiting numbers in the pool. Only real issue was the air conditioning. I’m not sure if it was ineffective or just not working at all - the fans made a noise but cold air couldn’t be felt. I was hoping the air con in the new room we got moved to would work better, but sadly no such luck. It just so happened to be the hottest day of the year so far during our visit, so without any real working air con the room got very hot. Other than that though, a very good break and a nice hotel. Would happily stay again.

On paper there is lots to like about this hotel. We loved the location and booked for spa & pool facilities. Most staff were very helpful but our stay was not without issues. The room was unbearably hot with the 'air con' being useless. Phoned down to reception to ask for a fan as couldn't sleep but no answer despite multiple attempts. Gave up as after a long day didn't feel like heading down to search for someone. Shower was awful too going hot to cold and back. Check out took ages. Not the staff fault just seemed understaffed for number of guests. Given the price we paid it was probably just about worth it and would stay again for the location as a base in Edinburgh

Where to start? Checkin was absolute chaos, felt very sorry for the few staff left to deal with everyone. Room not ready by 4pm (check in at 3pm). Breakfast was a total shambles with long queues. We had spa treatments booked - changing room was absolutely disgusting, how no one fell on the extremely wet floor was a miracle. It was smelly, no toilet paper, towels overflowing. If this is it during a pandemic, I’d hate to see it normally. The one saving grace was the treatments - well mine anyway - I had Lisa who was very friendly, made sure I was comfortable and gave the loveliest, relaxing massage. My mum had a older blonde lady who was very abrupt, not really interested on how she wanted the massage and she just felt like she was bothering her by having a treatment. We then went for afternoon tea which took forever and was pathetic when arrived. Won’t be back.

Hi IreC97, Thank you for booking your spa day with us last week. I'm very sorry to hear you did not have a great experience with us. Regrettably we did run late in having some rooms available, which impacted on our guests first impressions. Both as a company and individually within the hotel. guest comfort and safety particularly in relation to the pandemic is of huge importance, and I'm very sorry if you were let down in any way. I will continue to monitor and support the team to complete all cleaning and hygiene checks throughout the premises. Thank you for the kind feedback on your treatments and the spa therapist. Again, I'm sorry to hear that this was not consistent and this is something that has been discussed as a team in an effort to improve. Thanks again for sharing your feedback, which is very valuable. I do hope to be able to welcome you back for a more enjoyable visit.

I had a spa day booked at this hotel to celebrate my 40th birthday with my mum and sisters and what a big disappointment it was. I have stayed at many MacDonald hotels and this was by the far the worst. Our afternoon tea took 50 minutes to arrive at our table. The restaurant only had 4 other tables occupied and when we asked where our afternoon tea was after waiting 30 minutes, the waiting staff had no idea. They didn't even acknowledge the fact that we were sitting there with no food at our table. After we asked where our food was, it took another 20 minutes for it to arrive. They gave no explanation as to what had happened. When the afternoon tea finally arrived, it had a very small amount of food, equalling half a sandwich each, no other savoury food and a very small cake selection. When I booked the afternoon tea by email weeks before, I told them we had a vegetarian in the party. No vegetarian options were on the plate, so we had to ask for veggie sandwiches to be provided as well. The only saving grace in the whole situation was the very polite and apologetic waitress Sarah who had just started her shift. When we went down for our spa treatments, we found the spa area to be very outdated and the changing rooms were very dirty. The nappy bin had obviously not been changed for a while and we couldn't see any evidence of much cleaning being carried out, being that we are in the midst of a pandemic. We had to book a slot for the swimming pool, however the swimming pool had too much people in it and it didn't appear that they were following the booking system that other pools are adhering to. Overall, a very disappointing visit.

Hi gemmaj836, Thank you for choosing to celebrate your 40th with a spa day with us. I'm very disappointed to hear it was not the enjoyable experience that it should have been. I have investigated the issues relating to the changing rooms, as we have implemented increased cleaning schedules since the pandemic. I'm very sorry if the facilities were not to standard. We also have maximum guest numbers for the pool of 12 guests which we adhere to strictly. Thank you for the kind comments on our team member Sarah, I will be sure to share this feedback. I hope to be able to welcome you back to Macdonald Holyrood in the future.

This was our 1st night away since March 2020. The checkin was chaotic. Loads of people turning up with a booking which couldnt be found on the system. We queued for about 20 minutes to check in. We trying to book the pool all week however there was no answer to the phone. On the day we were told there was no slots left so that was out the window. The room was not fantastically clean. We found a hair under a cup in the bathroom and the shower hadnt been cleaned thoroughly. The screen had limescale despite we hadnt had a shower yet. Breakfast was disappointing. They had items missing but never said anything about it and when we queried why it was missing we were told they had none left but never bothered offering an alternative item. We werent offered toast so asked and it took about 10-15min to arrive after prompting a few times. Overall really disappointing. I understand they are getting back into the swing of it but some really minors things could have been done to provide a better service when issues have been experienced.
