I've not visited the hotel yet and really hope it's MUCH better than the phone service. I'm calling to book dinner, the pool etc. and it's not going well. I've called numerous times over many days and either the auto service pushes me round in circles, I'm on hold for over 30 mins with no success or hung up when I do get through to someone. First impressions are lasting impressions.

Stir-crazy after lockdown and no foreign travel, we followed the advice and holidayed in UK, choosing the MacDonald Holyrood, because it boasted a needed Spa. Given the value of half-board, we dined in the stylish Surf & Turf hotel restaurant. Fantastic choice, beautiful food and (what did it for us) amazingly friendly staff. Engaged with us every meal time, interested in us and remembered our likes and dislikes. Nothing too much trouble for reception team and the Spa was really great. Hotel off the main drag but within 10-15 mins walk from Princes St and 2 mins to Royal Mile. Lots of choice in Edinburgh but the facilities, price, value and overall attitude of staff means we’ll come back - a great base in this fantastic city. They even remembered the birthday reason for the staycation (see photo). So great to have this experience on returning to travel. Covid ‘safe & sound’ regime at hotel was firm but not intrusive

Stayed in the hotel for 2 nights as a little treat before becoming parents. It was quick and easy to check in and the staff at the front desk were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was included in our package and was pretty good, although I’m not sure if it would be worth the £18pp as advertised. We never got to try the surf and turf restaurant but it did look very nice. The room was nice and the location is excellent for getting into the town centre. The tv in our room didn’t work, but a helpful man came to have a look at it and, although he was unable to fix it, moved our room to one with a working tv. He also offered to help me move our things, which I thought was a very kind gesture. My girlfriend went for a pregnancy massage which she loved and we went for a swim together after - I couldn’t fault the swimming facilities at all and we both had a nice swim. We did have to book this due to covid limiting numbers in the pool. Only real issue was the air conditioning. I’m not sure if it was ineffective or just not working at all - the fans made a noise but cold air couldn’t be felt. I was hoping the air con in the new room we got moved to would work better, but sadly no such luck. It just so happened to be the hottest day of the year so far during our visit, so without any real working air con the room got very hot. Other than that though, a very good break and a nice hotel. Would happily stay again.

On paper there is lots to like about this hotel. We loved the location and booked for spa & pool facilities. Most staff were very helpful but our stay was not without issues. The room was unbearably hot with the 'air con' being useless. Phoned down to reception to ask for a fan as couldn't sleep but no answer despite multiple attempts. Gave up as after a long day didn't feel like heading down to search for someone. Shower was awful too going hot to cold and back. Check out took ages. Not the staff fault just seemed understaffed for number of guests. Given the price we paid it was probably just about worth it and would stay again for the location as a base in Edinburgh

Where to start? Checkin was absolute chaos, felt very sorry for the few staff left to deal with everyone. Room not ready by 4pm (check in at 3pm). Breakfast was a total shambles with long queues. We had spa treatments booked - changing room was absolutely disgusting, how no one fell on the extremely wet floor was a miracle. It was smelly, no toilet paper, towels overflowing. If this is it during a pandemic, I’d hate to see it normally. The one saving grace was the treatments - well mine anyway - I had Lisa who was very friendly, made sure I was comfortable and gave the loveliest, relaxing massage. My mum had a older blonde lady who was very abrupt, not really interested on how she wanted the massage and she just felt like she was bothering her by having a treatment. We then went for afternoon tea which took forever and was pathetic when arrived. Won’t be back.

Response from Siann Reid, General Manager at Macdonald Holyrood Hotel

Hi IreC97, Thank you for booking your spa day with us last week. I'm very sorry to hear you did not have a great experience with us. Regrettably we did run late in having some rooms available, which impacted on our guests first impressions. Both as a company and individually within the hotel. guest comfort and safety particularly in relation to the pandemic is of huge importance, and I'm very sorry if you were let down in any way. I will continue to monitor and support the team to complete all cleaning and hygiene checks throughout the premises. Thank you for the kind feedback on your treatments and the spa therapist. Again, I'm sorry to hear that this was not consistent and this is something that has been discussed as a team in an effort to improve. Thanks again for sharing your feedback, which is very valuable. I do hope to be able to welcome you back for a more enjoyable visit.
