I recently stayed at this hotel for 7 days. During that time the staff was so gracious and helpful. One person in particular stands out. David Brown, one of the concierge was EXTREMELY helpful with whatever we needed....as an example, the day we were leaving on the train from Waverly the weather was very stormy. We had heard that some trains might be cancelled. David took the time to look up the issues with the trains and was very reassuring that since we were headed south we would be okay. I wanted to thank him publicly for his very kind assistance during our visit. THANK YOU DAVID!

So as any hotel stay is half bed and half breakfast I could not score this stay any higher than an average as I only enjoyed a part of it. On the positive side, the room is of a good size and the bed is comfortable. There is tea/instant coffee and kettle available. The room is on the warm side, and as the window is tied to prevent you opening too much, it closes during the night, however you can get a reasonable night sleep. My only suggestion for the housekeeping staff is to ensure the shower gel is topped up - since the bottle is tacked to the wall. The breakfast on the other hand is awful. The quality of the cooked breakfast ingredients is very low. The coffee was disgusting. The yoghurts all fruit (high in sugar) no natural yoghurt on offer. So my recommendation would be to book the room without breakfast if you can, and head out for breakfast. I was certainly on the hunt for decent coffee straight after breakfast.

This was a nice hotel in a good location at the bottom of the Royal Mile. The staff was nice and helpful when asking questions. Room was large and bathroom was large as well. The only problem we had was the HVAC system seem to only blow out hot air so we slept with the window open for most of the time which wasn't a big deal. Breakfast was also good in their restaurant. If you don't want to walk to the top of the royal mile then this might not be the hotel for you as it is all the way at the bottom of the hill.

Good gym. Modern equipment and good new shower facilities Mens changing room is never kept clean, the lockers are consistently broken, there is never any soap in the dispensers. Swimming pool is small but clean. The temperature can vary depending on the day. The steam room has not worked in a long time so as a paying member this incredibly disappointing. The sauna is ok but temperature is never consistent. Staff can be rude at times. Recently witnessed a member of staff shouting and yelling at a women in the gym for turning the music down (she asked all the in the gym if this was ok) ever since Jamie left (previous manager) standards have dramatically reduced. So - fix the steam room. We after all pay a membership for this to work. Have staff treat paying customers with respect. Keep the place clean. Basic hospitality requirements especially just after a pandemic hygiene should be top priority.

Dear Q8414FKthomasw, Thank you for your review. As a member of our gym I'm sure you are aware of the ongoing investment in this area of the hotel given recent new installations so i do find some of your feedback surprising and also the feedback in regards to team members. The new supervisory and management team in the leisure department are certainly working hard to build and improve on our members relationship with the hotel so we will certainly take your feedback on board. Best wishes, Fiona

The hotel is in a fabulous location. However, the room was not very clean including the bed sheets and the internet rarely worked. The rooms are large but poorly designed (no usb outlets, only one outlet where a converter could be placed, heated towel rack in which could only hold one towel and would burn the flesh off of anyone that touched it-but was the only towel rack available). I understand it is an older building but the mold in the shower and the air systems could use some work. I absolutely LOVED Scotland; however, would not stay here again.

We stayed here in July 2022. It is a clean hotel. Its within easy walking distance to the Royal Mile. Its very close to the Holyrood Palace and Scottish Parliament. The staff are very friendly and helpful. It was good to be off the Royal Mile because its a little quieter.

Good experience, would happily recommend and stay again. It’s at the bottom of the Royal Mile, so in a quiet part of town, a walk down to Holyrood at night was nice and a view of Arthur’s Seat in front of the hotel. Breakfast was great, and they are happy to do fresh items such as eggs. Good experience overall

We really enjoyed our stay. The standard double room was very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The bed and pillows were so comfy that I could have slept for days!! The staff were brilliant - a real credit to the hotel. We used the valet parking service which is excellent value for money. David, in particular, was superb. He went the extra mile to ensure we enjoyed our stay including recommending places to eat at the evening. The reception staff were also so friendly and professional (I didn’t notice names) and went the extra mile for us. The pool is a decent size, changing rooms are good and clean. We paid extra for breakfast, which at £38 for 2, was expensive. We enjoyed the dining room experience but it wasn’t worth the money really. We will definitely stay at the hotel when we are next in Edinburgh.

There was a woman in the gym who put the volume down of the speakers. She asked everyone in the gym if she could put the volume down because she has ADHD so the very loud music from the speakers overwhelm her. The gym trainer shouted rudely at her in front of everyone. She screamed in her face “IS IT YOU WHO KEEPS PUTTING THE VOLUME DOWN?’” The woman was honest and said yes, to which the gym trainer replied “WELL THIS IS A GYM YOU KNOW!” the lady left and was crying in the changing rooms. The gym trainer shouted at her in front of a client she was training. This woman explained she has a hidden disability (ADHD) This type of behaviour is horrendous. I felt like the gym trainer was trying to show off in front of her client. Disgusting behaviour. You would think this 5 star hotel would employ a person who is able to at least speak half decently to a member!
