Old Waverley is a very centrally located hotel where we stayed for about 5 days. The positives were good housekeeping, wifi and central location. Biggest problem was that the bathroom used to smell very badly. Second problem was that there was no cooling. This year August was very warm and it used to be very difficult to sleep. Option was... Good hotel in excellent location, very central for everything, superb room. Would have liked the air con to have run during night but think it was switched off centrally, it was a very hot night, unusual for Edinburgh, but they do get them! Breakfast was good, also great to be able to store luggage before & after check in/out.

Hotel room is nothing special, no air con, stuffy room, noisy with window open. Bathroom was modern but very impractical unless you were an Olympic gymnast to swing into the bath off the toilet seat! Ridiculous, wouldn't stay here again! Charged twice the rate for booking an extra night - over priced and a rip off! Very disappointing 😖

Location is fantastic on Princes St and it's clean but everything else is mediocre. Entrance is pokey, room is small. Free wi-if drops out. View awful. Everything else OK such as TV, en-suite, iron, tea making, etc. So if you only want a room in a great location then go for it just don't expect luxury.

Although "old" is literal, the hotel has tremendous worn charm. It has all the conveniences of a large modern hotel and the location cannot be topped. Stayed 3 nights and we were very happy. Will come back again.

We have stayed at this hotel twice and it a great hotel for short stays. Our room was very small and had no view apart from the wall 4 feet away, but no issues as we only stayed here one night. Central location makes it a very good spot, right opposite Waverley Train Station and a tram stop not too... More

A very imposing and attractive looking hotel. The inside is classic and comfortable. I did notice some somewhat bizarre features inside my room, and I suppose I found these things baffling, but not sufficiently irritating to mention to the staff. For example, the hair dryer was plugged into the wall via a hole in the back of the desk drawer,... More

The drawbacks of staying at this hotel are few compared to the benefits of staying in an area that is so close to everything there is to do in Edinburgh! To begin, the train station is across the street as well as the hop-on hop-off bus. Many of the shops, restaurants, and sites are within walking distance. The hotel is... More

We were looking for a central hotel near the Royal Mile and Princes St. This one was ideal with it being about 200 yards from the St. Andrews Square tram stop directly from the Airport - around 13 pounds return. Cannot ask for a better location. Staff were very helpful. Price was fair but we were fortunate/unfortunate to be there... More

I had stayed in this hotel many years ago and so knew it was in a good position for accessing all that Edinburgh has to offer. It is close to the railway station and transport from the airport stops close by and is very regular. Our booking was room only and it did cost more than I expected but then... More

Staying in Princes Street and Gardens

Neighborhood Profile
Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.
