This hostel was really truly great. Located right by the castle and close to everything. Showers and facilities were clean and the dorms were big. Breakfast was cheap and the common room and the kitchen were large and had everything you needed + free coffee/tea and chocolate whenever! Staff was very friendly as well. I have really no complaints at... More

One of the best hostels I have been staying at. The location is awesome, just 3 minutes walk from the stunning castle, right in the city centre and the old town and at walking distance to almost everything. The staff was super friendly and helpful and made me feel totally welcome right from the beginning. The building itself is beautiful,... More

I stayed 4 nights at Castle Rock Hostel (end of November 2016) and the stay was very pleasant. - Staff: the staff was helpful and 24/7 available at the reception. - Rooms: the bedrooms bathroom were very clean and the common room/breakfast room was very comfy and nicely decorated. Each room could be locked and each guest had access to... More

My first night in Edinburgh I stayed at the Cowgate Tourist hostel and wasn't impressed. I decided to book at Castle Rock and ended up extending my time in Edinburgh. The location (and view!) are incredible.

I had a great experience at Castle Rock Hostel! Beds were comfortable at a great price, staff and other visitors were extremely friendly, and it was in a great location within walking distance of everything I wanted to do.

Highly recommend it's in an amazing location walking distance to everything! The staff were super friendly and helpful. We stayed in the 4 person female dorm and it was clean, beds pretty hard but other than that good :)

I stayed in the 12 bed women's room. The bed was super comfortable and Castle Rock also offers a safe for your belongings (that is actually safe and closes properly, unlike in other hostels). The showers and toilets were always clean! I didn't try the breakfast, so can't say anything about that. I especially want to mentuon the staff, though.... More

Stayed in a 4 person dorm prior to our tour..and a 12 bed on the way back. I actually preferred the bigger one as the 4 bedroom got quite hot and its a gamble who you are stuck with in small quarters. Location and facilities are great. You get your own locker and washrooms never felt busy. Staff are great

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
