Such a lovely and friendly atmosphere, everyone is so considerate of each other. Would not recommend the breakfast they provide but you can make your own food in the kitchen or go to a close by cafe or pub, which you're likely to receive a discount on with the hostel ticket. The pub crawl they organise along the Royal mile... More

We stayed there for three nights, the hostel has a very nice atmosphere, huge common areas and friendly people. Wonderful central location, plus: for a reasonable price you can have a very good breakfast!

Loaction is good since it is at the end of the Royal Mile, that means it is near the centre but still quiet, despite a little climb-up from the train station. Staff are very helpful and efficient. The £4 laundry is the best service I've ever had in my 3-year backpacking experience. It's not DIY and finishes within a day.

Location - amazing, price - amazing, facilities (pool table, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, lounge area, £1.50 breakfast) - amazing, view of Edinburgh - amazing. Superb hostel. And finally there is really secure storage for bicycles should you have them.

After staying at six hostels around the UK and Ireland, this was leaps and bounds the best. The location is prime. We arrived in the evening and the staff showed us around the hostel with its many lounges based on vibe, told us about the beer pong tournament at the hostel and invited us to go on a pub crawl... Stayed here for two nights in a 10-bed dorm. Excellent location in the old town, also close to the university. Staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms and facilities were clean, my bed was comfortable. Only very little noise. A great advantage for travellers who wish to prepare their own food is the very big kitchen. Wi-fi worked well. Would... More

Castle Rock Hostel is a blast to stay at for any traveler. For a very fair price, you get a good bed in a clean room in a hostel with every facility you would need on your trip to Edinburgh. There's a big kitchen where you can cook and may keep your food in one of a number of fridges;... More

So close to everything, whether you want newer architecture or older, you've got both. The people were amazing and the activities and pub crawls were a highlight. The staff was really fun and accommodating, they were also very fun to spend time with.

Castle Rock was a great place to stay. The staff were amazingly helpful. Rooms are clean and comfy. Plenty of clean showers and toilets. Cheap breakfast and free hot drinks in the common room. The hostel also puts on great events. Can definitely recommend the nightly movies for those who want a chill night in. Importantly the hostel is in... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
