We had a room with an unobstructed view of the Edinburgh Castle...need I say more? Seriously though, this hotel was amazing from the minute we walked in until we left 2 days later. The room was so comfortable, with every amenity you could want, comfortable beds, great linens and a very modern, spacious bathroom. Also, a very nice workout facility... More

This hotel is in a perfect location with a great view of the castle. It is easy walking distance to the Castle and gardens, National Gallery, and the Royal Mile. The walk along the Royal Mile will bring you to the Scotch Whiskey Experience ( A MUST). The staff at the hotel is fabulous, very helpful and courteous. The rooms... More

My husband & I visited (7-6-15) for a Champagne Afternoon Tea given to us as a Christmas gift for our 3 children. On arrival, a member of reception staff pointed us in the right direction, which unfortunately was the wrong direction!!! This didn't put us off....we had a little giggle about it! A gentleman kindly took us to the Peacock... More

Stayed for 3 nights over the Edinburgh marathon festival weekend. Had a lovely stay overall our room was lovely, not enough milk to make more than one hot drink which was a slight annoyance, also internet access was poor and TV in room was temperamental. These are small points to mention. Our bathroom was lovely. The Pompadour was amazing -... More

This was our second stay at The Caledonian and we were quite pleased again. Excellent service from the time you enter until when you leave. Location is fantastic near shopping and across from the castle. Castle view rooms have truly spectacular views of the castle. My only complaint was breakfast. While a good buffet with plentiful choices, on the first... More

We stayed for 3 nights as a family of four (4); we booked via the HHonors website, and requested a family room. Positives. 1.) The room was extremely, extremely spacious, and we had no issues fitting two adults, a teenager and a 10 year old. The room overlooked Prince's Street...another perk. 2.) As a Gold Hilton member, we enjoyed a... More

After 9 months of long distant commute we wanted to indulge ourselves for our last night before we left the city for our new home. Great hotel, perfectly located for visiting Edinburgh. Staff were friendly and attentive. Useful car park (limited spaces) charged at £20 per 24 hours. Room was lovely and very equipped with a great view of the castle. We didn't eat at the hotel but used the Caley Bar which was superb and nice live music

This hotel has been renovated since it was called The Caledonian. Generally this is successful with an improved lobby and lounge and rooms are definitely much much better. The exterior, hallways, stairs, staff, all are delightful until you put your key in the lock and discover the disappointing room you're actually staying in. In most other hotels this room would be adequate but at almost £180 a night it is unacceptable regardless of location. The bottom of the windows were about 7 feet above the floor making them... Staying in West End

Neighborhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighborhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theaters and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, or the "Caley" as it has become affectionately known among Edinburgh folk, was and still is the epitome of style and excellence. The large, rose-coloured Permian sandstone facade, quarried in Dumfries, dominates the skyline of the city's west end. The hotel has not only remained a focal point for more than one hundred years, but a symbol of the very best of Scottish hospitality. The Caley's pivotal position at the very heart of Edinburgh has always been its greatest asset. Created out of the 19th century railway boom, the five star hotel is looking to the future with confidence and pride in its ability to keep pace with the times. The hotel's reputation is as justified now as it was when the hotel first opened its doors in 1903. ... more   less
