Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.

Stayed at this hotel before and it was fine, however disappointed on this occasion. When I booked it I asked for a room with a bath, I was told the room I booked did have a bath, but when we arrived the only room with a bath was right at the top of the hotel, room was very small and no lift so decided to stay in the booked room, Room decor is starting to looked quite dated, Shower works in a fashion, and I am aware this is an old hotel but the room is very hot even though the supplied a fan and floor boards creak really loud. The worst factor was the noise outside from the building works going on, I would of not booked this had I known, as you needed to keep window open due to the heat in the room. Staff were pleasant and friendly. We will not return unless a renovation was to be done, 2019 and no air con!

The staff are really friendly and the building has lots of great features. The bar down stairs is good fun with free pool. Our room had all the latest gadgetssuch as a 3d tv, sky, speaks in the ceilings, massage chair and a great bathroom. Will be coming back

Found this and booked the Loch Fyne room, which I have to say is lovely, with a stunning view, comfortable bed, and superb looking bath and shower room. We stayed for two nights, and both thought the room and hotel was lovely. Our only gripe really is that the room was Boiling warm, with just an open window for ventilation. On searching the room for air con controls, I was surprised to see there wasn't any - so spoke to reception, who gave me a fan. This remained on for the duration of our stay. Also worth noting, there is NO breakfast offering at all, nothing. I was really surprised at this, though a 2min walk round the corner we found a great little spot that did an AMAZING brekky.. Great staff, lovely decor - the steak house restaurant looked superb, though we already had dining plans. If they could sort AirCon, and brekky in bed - this would be 5 star for sure, and I would be back in a heartbeat... As it is, a very nice, clean, and modern/stylish place - well worth a visit

beautiful old townhouse that has been refurbished and fitted out tremendously with all mod cons.Rooms are medium sized with the bathrooms just as big as the bedroom.Good value given location.Guy on reception was incredibly unchatty and lacked any people skills at all - apart from that though the overall experience was good

We had booked into 4 Picardy Place through late rooms.com for 23/24th October 2013 only to turn up to find the doors closed and occupants refusing to answer the telephone - we had no alternative but to find other accommodation at very short notice! . It transpires that there had been a change of ownership and the new proprietors were refusing to honour any existing bookings - so I wouldn't trust this hotel one iota! When we made further inquiries it appears that this hotel regularly changes ownership and this has happened before!
