Just back from an overnight stay with my mum at The Merchant Hotel, faultless absolutely amazing rooms, facilities as I'm a wheelchair user and was looked after like a Queen didn't want to leave, cloth ear food outstanding and food all staff should be proud of themselves at the hotel made us feel so welcome,a special mention to Jack in the cocktail bar who was only there two days he's a real asset to the Hotel and a keeper.

As other reviewers have commented, The Merchant is a top class hotel with fantastic rooms, facilities, service, and food and drink options - cannot fault anything there. But, one of the core markers of a great hotel for me is how well I slept. Unfortunately, is was not well at The Merchant, due to two aspects: 1. Mattress and Pillows: I like firmness for both - the room we occupied had a soft mattress and soft pillows. 2. Heat: The room was too hot to sleep comfortably. Yes, there is air conditioning, but it was noisy and not something you'd have running through the night. The bathroom in particular was like a sauna. I appreciate that that neither of these may bother a lot of people but, for me, it resulted in a sore back/neck and a feeling of dehydration when I got up.

My elderly mum , son and myself attending an awards evening in Belfast decided to push the boat out and go for a pleasant stay. Well, when we arrived, there was no- one to greet us at the door and after we booked in to reception the girl simply handed us our key and said we are room such and such and then turned away from us. I was flabbergasted ….so I had to ask her how to get to the room and had to ask for help with our luggage. When we got to the room it was ok but after using the bathroom the mirror was fIlthy with finger marks and the bathroom window blind hanging off it’s rail. What do household managers do I ask? I remembering watching a programme about the Merchant on local television and decided to try it ourselves. Well don’t bother …..we even went to the jacuzzi and the cover was still over it and it wasn’t even a strong jet in the jacuzzi…my bath at home is stronger. My advise….for a supposedly 5 star hotel you shouldn’t have to ask staff for basics…..do NOT waste your money. If you want to look at interior just come on off the street and look around and save a fortune. The 3 of us paid a ridiculous amount of money for a very poor experience. The hallway to each room is soooo dark and dingy too. AVOID SAVE YOUR MONEY a 3 star would be better !!!

This was our first stay in what I can only describe as the heaven of hotels. From entering the front door we where greeted by Ian one of the Concierge,a gentleman and a huge asset to the hotel with his manner. Onto reception we where welcomed by Mark who again another seasoned professional in hospitality and couldn’t have been more than welcoming and gave us all info we required. We stayed on the third floor our room was beautiful with a balcony and a bathroom big enough to put another double bed into. We had dinner in the Cloth ear (separate review done ) Breakfast was in the great room, what an experience that was. Decor amazing, food and staff to match. We look forward to returning for another visit here soon. Do yourself a favour and treat yourself to the Merchant you really won’t regret it. P&E

We love the Merchant hotel and have stayed many times including our honeymoon. We have unfortunately not been able to visit for the past 2 years due to Covid, we had to cancel our New Year stay last year, so we were really looking forward to staying 3 nights this New Year. There were a couple of issues during our stay, one regarding noise from a bar across the street and a couple of housekeeping problems, but I'm almost loath to even mention them because of the way they were rectified in such an exemplary manner. The standard of service and friendliness we received from the staff was second to none, particularly the duty manger on duty on the night of the 29th December, his name escapes me, apologies. Managers Sarah and Eve, who treated us so well and more than compensated for the issues, such lovely people who really know the true meaning of hospitality and have the skills to really look after their guests. Our room was beautiful, the beds are so comfortable, the bathrooms are very luxurious and the turndown service a lovely touch. Breakfast was beautifully presented and delicious as was our meal in Berts, we had a great night and the live Jazz was fantastic. The hottub on the roof is gorgeous. We have already booked for New Year this year but we hope to he back before then to our favourite hotel.
