This recently refurbished boutique hotel is housed in a 400 year old listed building in the heart of Stratford upon Avon. Located opposite Shakespeare's school, among the ancient half-timbered buildings the town is famous for and only 2 minute's walk to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. This is THE place for a pre-theatre supper - local pianists play at 5.30pm daily and the atmosphere is great. The 12 funky en-suite bedrooms vary in size, cost and view. Try for a room at the front of the building for the perfect view. Great food is served all day, through till 10pm in this buzzy neighbourhood bistro with Afternoon Tea a particular favorite. Champagne Happy Hour is every Friday at 5pm and the bar is packed with a great, upmarket local crowd. The staff make the place and nothing is too much trouble.

Stopping off in Stratford on Avon for some R&R on our way back from visiting the family in North Wales and Derbyshire, we discovered that The Townhouse was the ideal location, within easy walking distance of all the attractions. The friendly welcome included an upgrade to a room on the first floor when the lady realised that my husband would find the stairs an effort. Our room was huge, with en suite plus a big bath (though we didn't use it) and an extremely comfortable bed. It was during the really hot spell and there were a couple of fans going. The substantial continental breakfast was excellent and we also enjoyed good dinners on both evenings. Throughout our stay we were impressed by the friendliness of all the staff, in what is clearly a very difficult year for them business-wise.
Parking was at an NCP car park a few minutes walk away, with the hotel providing a ticket which gave us a discount.

This is a well looked after property where attention to detail is met with genuine hospitality.
Dan is a very kind host ensuring you have everything you need for a great stay.
The restaurant has a sophisticated ambiance which is followed through by an efficient dinner service with freshly produced dishes which are of a good portion size and are very reasonably priced.
The hotel is very close to the centre and definitely one of the best in the area.
A boutique class hotel property which doesn't disssapoint.

Had a pleasant one night stay here in a luxury room. Loved the Temple Spa products and fridge with fresh milk , a nice touch. Parking 5 minutes away for about £8.50 a night, make sure you go to NCP and ask hotel reception for the override ticket. Slightly disorganised at breakfast as the lady was trying to do breakfast service and check people out simultaneously? Not sure where the other staff were? Wasn’t terribly impressed with breakfast buffet and filter coffee left out on a warming ring, but the hot food was nice and tasty.

We paid £126 for a room without breakfast, so it was very disappointing to find we had a ground floor small room, next to noisy bar area that was in need of redecoration (dirty marks, peeling paint etc). It also had a kind of back door, which was locked, but which made it very cold. I had been offered an upgrade by email for £10 prior to our visit, which I said yes to, but when I said this the reception just said 'oh yes, they were fully booked'. Obviously, I don't know what the other rooms are like, they could be lovely, I can only go on the experience I had of the place.
We ate here and the food was excellent and well priced. The service was very good and the manager was a great chap, lovely to chat to, professional and knowledgeable about the theatre we were going to see. It was Christmas time and the atmosphere in the bar area was lovely too.
Overall, I would say this place is great, but Room 1 should be much cheaper or simply avoided.

From start to finish an outstanding evening. A combination of excellence from the welcoming attitude of all the staff too a menu that covers all bases. We were a group of four - from pescatarian to vegan coupled with hardened carnivores all three courses wonderfully prepared and presented. The evening was a stand out event great value for money topped by a wonderful young man (Tristan) who played the piano and sang taking requests which i have to say enticed us to linger in the house for longer than intended. Thanks to all concerned.

We wanted somewhere affordable with a lovely, stylish bedroom, good service, tasty food and right in the heart of Stratford-upon-Avon. That's exactly what we got. Once they saw my walking stick they offered us a different bedroom on a lower floor without me having to ask. Recommend.

We booked directly with hotel as website and hotel reception said this would mean 'free breakfast'. This was not true - included was 'continental breakfast' which was sadly lacking, full breakfasts cost nearly £18 for two guests. On the plus side, the room was nicely decorated, comfortable, warm and quiet. The shower and loo were not ensuite as advertised but we didn't mind the two minute walk down a private corridor. Unfortunately no-one cleaned it during our three night stay, and I assume that the cleaner didn't know it was there. The view from room 4 is of the dustbins in the yard. So, overall, by all means stay there, but add on the cost of breakfast when comparing to similar hotels, and check that the cleaner knows about your shower room.

We arrived for a two day break at the start of the Coronavirus travel restrictions. The staff were very accommodating to our last minute change of numbers.
The hotel is in a central location, v convenient for accessing most tourist spots, bars and restaurants. Although there is no on-site parking, it is available at a nearby NCP car park for a reduced rate.
Our room was beautifully decorated and v comfortable. Great tea and coffee making facilities.
The breakfast choice was excellent, as were the breakfasts themselves. Would definitely return here.

My daughter and I recently stayed in The a at Tow house and were very disappointed. I’d seen the hotel on my last visit and decided to stay there next time On arrival the hotel was very quiet as the chef was self isolating so downstairs was shut. This alarmed me but we decided to stay as it was late We we’re shown our room given two keys and told that if we went out we’d need to use the other door as there were no staff on duty and the lady (owner?) was leaving. This seemed strange but we accepted it. We quickly changed, went downstairs to go out but came to a locked door that led to the dining/reception area. There was a small enclosed courtyard but no other facilities. I panicked as I thought of fire and our inability to escape then remembered we’d been told to phone a number if we needed assistance. We did this several times only to be met with an automated message saying the hotel was closed By this time we were both very concerned and we’re trapped with no means of escape. This is not a feeling I have ever had in a hotel before and with the restrictions required for safety not something I expected. After about five minutes a couple came out of their bedroom and so we told them of our situation. They directed us to a back staircase that led to an exit door and this allowed us to get out. We were so relieved to escape to safety and were quite shaken from our experience.
In the morning we were told we had continental breakfast included in our room rate. We only wanted coffee, orange juice and brown toast but were given croissants as there was no brown bread. This was fine but we had to wait as the one lady (different one to previous evening) was on her own making coffee, attending to breakfast guests, new arrivals, people leaving and people coming in for coffee. It was a bit chaotic but we were relaxed and had what we required. When finished we stood up to leave and were told by the lady that we owed her for our two glasses of orange. These were two small glasses filled with ice and some juice. I was surprised at this as we”d had very little for breakfast and I thought juice was standard in a continental breakfast. Anyway I was happy to pay for these and by this time just wanted to leave
We collected our cases and returned downstairs where I told the lady of our frightening ordeal the previous night. I told her it was to enable her ensure it didn’t happen to any other guest. To my surprise she was very unhappy to be told. She said I should have looked for fire exit signs. I suggested showing guests the back circular staircase to avoid confusion would solve the problem She then said she wouldn’t charge us for the orange juice
It was a pity our experience at this hotel did not come up to standard. I will not be returning as there are plenty of similarly priced hotels in Stratford where safety is given a greater priority.

Lovely central hotel, the staff were so friendly and chatty. The room was really nice, had everything we needed. We stayed in room 1, the only room on the ground floor right next to the bar but we weren't disturbed by noise from there. We could hear people walking around above us but it wasn't an issue.
Shower was really nice. Nespresso machine. Fridge. We only stayed one night but would stay again in we were in the area. The hotel has no parking but we parked in the Rother St car park and got a parking voucher from the hotel on departure.

Answer from townhouse17

As we are so fabulously central, unfortunately we do not have our own car park. We do, however, have great reduced rates with the local NCP car park on Rother Street. Come and see us first on arriving in Stratford-upon-Avon. You can then drop off any bags that you may have and we can direct you around to the car park. Our rate for hotel guests is just £4.50 per 24 hours.

Hi Are hairdryers provided in the room? Is early check-in/late checkout available?
Answer from townhouse17
Stratford upon Avon
Yes - there are hairdryers and hair straighteners in each room at the Church Street Townhouse. Our check in time is usually 3pm and check out by 11am, but, if the room is available, we may be able to arrange early checkin or late check out. Of course, you are always welcome to drop off bags early or leave them to collect them later. If you have specific times in mind, why not drop us an email us directly or ring on 01789 262222?
