#19 of 83 B&Bs / Inns in Stratford-upon-Avon
Travelers' Choice
This recently refurbished boutique hotel is housed in a 400 year old listed building in the heart of Stratford upon Avon. Located opposite Shakespeare's school, among the ancient half-timbered buildings the town is famous for and only 2 minute's walk to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. This is THE place for a pre-theatre supper - local pianists play at 5.30pm daily and the atmosphere is great. The 12 funky en-suite bedrooms vary in size, cost and view. Try for a room at the front of the building for the perfect view. Great food is served all day, through till 10pm in this buzzy neighbourhood bistro with Afternoon Tea a particular favorite. Champagne Happy Hour is every Friday at 5pm and the bar is packed with a great, upmarket local crowd. The staff make the place and nothing is too much trouble.

We booked directly with hotel as website and hotel reception said this would mean 'free breakfast'. This was not true - included was 'continental breakfast' which was sadly lacking, full breakfasts cost nearly £18 for two guests. On the plus side, the room was nicely decorated, comfortable, warm and quiet. The shower and loo were not ensuite as advertised but we didn't mind the two minute walk down a private corridor. Unfortunately no-one cleaned it during our three night stay, and I assume that the cleaner didn't know it was there. The view from room 4 is of the dustbins in the yard. So, overall, by all means stay there, but add on the cost of breakfast when comparing to similar hotels, and check that the cleaner knows about your shower room.

Lovely evening at the Townhouse, due to covid and brexit everywhere in Stratford-upon-Avon was fully booked on Saturday night. Luckily got in the Townhouse for 6.00pm . A little early but great full. Friendly Staff and very obliging. Unfortunately the food was disappointing. Starters were ok but main course was not what we expected. We both ordered crispy duck salad which when arrived was a dish full of thinly sliced carrot and cucumber with a small amount of what looked like crispy batter bits on top. The duck was tasty but overwhelmed by the quality of salad. Very disappointed as the waiter had informed us that the menu was new and been brought in only a few days before. Overall a pleasant location with well mannered and friendly staff but disappointing food.

Stayed here recently while visiting Stratford. A beautiful boutique hotel with lovely decor and a cosy feel. We met 2 staff members while here - one at the bar in the evening and the other at breakfast. Both super friendly, welcoming and attentive. The hotel is fantastically located and there are lots of tourist attractions and bars nearby. My only complaint is that the rooms were unbelievably warm - there is no air con and when we realised how hot it was, there was nobody on the front desk. Luckily we were staying for a couple of nights and managed to get a fan the next day. Otherwise a fantastic stay and would definitely recommend to anyone visiting!

This hotel has changed since it was awarded The Sunday Times ‘Best Places to Stay’ Hotel 2017. Their website does not inform you that standard booking which includes breakfast is Continental style and their version of that as well. Cooked breakfast has to be paid for. The restaurant is currently closed for dinner. It is clean and the beds are comfortable. With no hotel parking and the cooked breakfast to be paid for the value is less than other comparable hotels. p.s Take some coat hangers as well.

Stopping off in Stratford on Avon for some R&R on our way back from visiting the family in North Wales and Derbyshire, we discovered that The Townhouse was the ideal location, within easy walking distance of all the attractions. The friendly welcome included an upgrade to a room on the first floor when the lady realised that my husband would find the stairs an effort. Our room was huge, with en suite plus a big bath (though we didn't use it) and an extremely comfortable bed. It was during the really hot spell and there were a couple of fans going. The substantial continental breakfast was excellent and we also enjoyed good dinners on both evenings. Throughout our stay we were impressed by the friendliness of all the staff, in what is clearly a very difficult year for them business-wise. Parking was at an NCP car park a few minutes walk away, with the hotel providing a ticket which gave us a discount.
