#19 of 86 B&Bs / Inns in Stratford-upon-Avon
Travelers' Choice
This recently refurbished boutique hotel is housed in a 400 year old listed building in the heart of Stratford upon Avon. Located opposite Shakespeare's school, among the ancient half-timbered buildings the town is famous for and only 2 minute's walk to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. This is THE place for a pre-theatre supper - local pianists play at 5.30pm daily and the atmosphere is great. The 12 funky en-suite bedrooms vary in size, cost and view. Try for a room at the front of the building for the perfect view. Great food is served all day, through till 10pm in this buzzy neighbourhood bistro with Afternoon Tea a particular favorite. Champagne Happy Hour is every Friday at 5pm and the bar is packed with a great, upmarket local crowd. The staff make the place and nothing is too much trouble.

Just stayed at this hotel with a friend for 2 nights as part of my 60th Birthday celebrations. From the minute we arrived every single member of staff we met was polite, friendly, professional and interested in where we were from and if there was anything at all they could help us with. Our room was lovely. Comfortable beds. Little bottle of milk in the fridge (instead of the usual small cartons). Lots of different teas/coffees. Toiletries in the bathroom and good sized bathroom with walk in shower. We had a couple of minor issues that we raised with the staff and they were immediately addressed - exceeding our expectations! The hotel is situated on a quiet road but within easy reach of the river and shops/bars/restaurants although the hotel itself serves breakfast and evening meals. I would 100% recommend this hotel and have already told my family and friends. Thank you to every one involved

We arrived at the hotel on Sat, 22 May 21 at 13:45pm. I asked the lady if the room was ready (I know check-in isn't till 3pm but some hotels have your room ready early so thought that I would check). The lady I spoke to said it wasn't and to come back at 3pm to which we did. No problem with that, I just thought they may still be cleaning the room. We went back at 3pm and checked in no problem. The girl showed us to our room and when i walked in, I immediately thought the bed hadn't been made! I could tell the sheets were clean, it just looked like the bed hadn't actually been made. The cushion and pillows had just been thrown on it. The girl left the room and like you do, you check the room out. I noticed we had no cups, milk or anything to make a cup of tea or coffee. There was a fridge but with nothing in it and there was a tray for the cups etc but again this was empty. I went downstairs and explained to the girl that we had no cups, tea, coffee, milk etc to make a tea/coffee. She apologised first and then said "oh sorry we bring you a basket up with it all in". I apologised and said that was fine and I wasn't complaining, just wondered how we were supposed to make a coffee. While we were waiting for our basket to arrive (which took 30 minutes!), I went into the bathroom to have a look. After lifting the lid of the toilet, I was horrified to find the bowl with facieses in it and wee around the top of the toilet! It quite clearly hadn't been cleaned. The girl came back with our basket (which contained milk, tea, cups, 2 croissants and butter, (no knife) 3 pieces of fruit and water which was nice as we weren’t expecting this). I explained that the toilet was dirty with other people’s mess still in it. She went to get her bucket and cleaned the mess and apologised. Whilst sat on the bed after she left, I notice that the bed side cabinets, lamps, desk and everything else was covered in a film of dust! This room had not been cleaned prior to our arrival or it wouldn’t have been like this. The coasters were filthy and were covered in tea and coffee stains. They needed throwing as I don’t think bleach would have even got them clean. Both my husband and I were sat on the bed, my husband on his iPad and myself on my phone when suddenly the door burst open and in walked a complete stranger! She just said “oh sorry, wrong room” and off she walked out! It was like a scene from Faulty Towers! After that, we locked the door which you shouldn’t have to in your own room. An hour later after having a shower and getting dry there was another knock at the door and someone again tried the door. We were both like what the hell is going on! We went out for a lovely meal and got back to our room around 9pm. It was already a little noisy but that didn’t bother us as it was the first weekend people could go out after lockdown and stay out. We knew people would be loud and having a good time. We didn’t expect this to go on till 3am though! We were kept awake by people outside swearing, laughing and joking. We had the window open ever so slightly (and only one stays open) as it was so hot in the room and the fan didn’t work properly as it doesn’t rotate and only stays in one place and was so loud! Right outside our room at the front of the hotel are tables and chairs for people to drink/eat on so don’t expect it to be quiet in room 5! The following morning, I couldn’t wait to leave. We got up at 6am after 3 hours sleep, packed up our stuff, had a coffee and went down at 8am. I couldn’t seem to get out into the bar/breakfast area and tried various doors which were all closed. I waited and eventual the same lady I spoke to about checking in opened the door. I went to hand my key over and explained that if I hadn’t paid £135.00 already the day before for the room, there is no way I would be paying the full amount as the room was filthy. She replied straight away with “The room was not filthy, I checked it myself!” I’m sorry but what part of other people mess down the toilet isn’t filthy. I told her I’d taken pictures of the room and it was filthy. I explained about the dirty coasters, dust on the bedside cabinets and lamps etc. The only thing she would say to me throughout is “Sorry you feel that way!” She was so rude and just kept looking at the wall whilst talking to me! There is no way I would stay at this hotel again. A few colleagues were going to book this hotel once I got back and told them if it was nice. I’ve told them to book the Hotel Indigo on the same block slightly further up. It looks absolutely beautiful so I’ve recommended that. They wouldn’t stay here after seeing the photos! We stayed in room 5, Superior King. Absolutely not worth the money. Worst hotel experience ever!

We arrived for a two day break at the start of the Coronavirus travel restrictions. The staff were very accommodating to our last minute change of numbers. The hotel is in a central location, v convenient for accessing most tourist spots, bars and restaurants. Although there is no on-site parking, it is available at a nearby NCP car park for a reduced rate. Our room was beautifully decorated and v comfortable. Great tea and coffee making facilities. The breakfast choice was excellent, as were the breakfasts themselves. Would definitely return here.

Had a pleasant one night stay here in a luxury room. Loved the Temple Spa products and fridge with fresh milk , a nice touch. Parking 5 minutes away for about £8.50 a night, make sure you go to NCP and ask hotel reception for the override ticket. Slightly disorganised at breakfast as the lady was trying to do breakfast service and check people out simultaneously? Not sure where the other staff were? Wasn’t terribly impressed with breakfast buffet and filter coffee left out on a warming ring, but the hot food was nice and tasty.
