This is probably my 3rd time staying at this hotel and was pre-COVID. This time I stayed 4 nights (Monday to Friday morning) and have no plans to stay here again. There has got to be better options even if you have to drive further in the morning before heading to the office. The water pressure for the shower was terrible but great out of the bathtub faucet - which does make it very difficult to wash your hair. Speaking of showering, the metal mini-blinds in the bathroom were absolutely, embarrassingly terrible and did not have any curtains to cover them. All the slat ends were horribly bent out of shape and went in many directions. When you have the lights on in the bathroom early morning or at night and are using the toilet or shower - anyone can see directly in through the bent blinds.I ended up having to get creative to get privacy. I actually grabbed a stool from the bedroom, stood on it, and hung toilet paper and light day pads (cut into strips to make tape) to hold the blinds in place (my pictures are hilarious). You would think that the staff would report it and that it would have been repaired immediately. As I was leaving early each morning and getting back late each night, I didn’t have time to deal with it. Overall, this was very annoying and completely nuts that I had to do this to get privacy in the bathroom (room 210). On a more positive note, the staff were very helpful in booking taxi’s, providing restaurant suggestions, and meeting any other need. A couple of other minor irritants - no refills were provided on the shampoos / bath gel (so I ran out) and the maid left the master key in my room. Another colleague tested the master key on her own room’s door and they were able to get in. While we were having dinner later that night, I handed it over to one of the staff. I also could never get the room cool enough — it always felt over heated no matter what I did. At check in, I requested a room with a safe. If you want a safe, be sure to do this as not all rooms have one. The room did not have any drawers for unpacking and not enough closet space/hangers. I Had to lay all my clothes for my two week business trip over the chairs. Overall, it would have been smarter to stay at a better hotel in town and take a car service to the office each day. To be fair, I did not report any of these issues due to lack of time.

Dear brendas329, Thank you for your feedback following your recent stay at the hotel. We are delighted that you have enjoyed your previous stays at the hotel but were deeply saddened that you did not enjoy this recent stay under these most different of circumstances. We were somewhat surprised at the comment about the water pressure and the heating/cooling as we have not had these comments raised before. Our maintenance engineer has investigated and has not been able to find any problem and certainly we have not had these issues raised again since your visit. Nevertheless, thank you for bringing them to our attention as it may well be an intermittent issue and as a result we are continuing to monitor them, so that, if necessary, we can take prompt corrective action. We also appreciate your comments about the bathroom blind and we are sorry that you had to take the corrective action that you did. Please rest assured that we have since replaced the blind and as a result, we are confident that the situation detailed by yourself should not occur again. We are pleased that you found the staff to be helpful and we were able to meet all of your requests and needless to say, this has given us all much pleasure to read. In terms of the non-replacement of shower gels etc. then as per the welcome letter and due to the current pandemic we are not going into bedrooms daily so thus are not aware of guests need fresh supplies of anything. A quick word to reception would have enabled fresh supplies to be promptly delivered to you. We are sorry if this was not clear in the welcome letter. As for the maid leaving a master key in your bedroom, then please rest assured that this matter has been dealt with in the firmest manner possible. In conclusion, we are sorry that these issues were not reported at the time as we would dearly have liked to have taken corrective action during your visit. However, we do understand that time constraints can prevent this from happening. We do trust that when some form of normality resumes in the future that we may have the pleasure of welcoming you back to the hotel, especially as until this last occasion you have enjoyed your previous visits. Yours sincerely, Andrew J M Oxley General Manager

Rooms not as expected, no mention of paying for parking, supplement to eat breakfast in restaurant, not told about different menus on different days, coffee pods left in machine. Staff tried, room was OK, nice bed and TV, but overall experience fell far short of expectations

Dear Surveyor47, Thank you for your comments following your recent visit to the hotel. We are pleased that you found the bed to be comfortable but we sorry that you felt that experience fell short of your expectations. Obviously, things are a little different at the moment due to the current pandemic but we do trust that when things return to normal, we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back to the hotel so that you may see it in all it's glory. Please, when you wish to return, please do contact us so that we may make the necessary arrangements in order to ensure that everything will be as we all would wish it to be. Yours sincerely,

If you are thinking of having your wedding here don't bother, the food was awful, hardly any staff, very unhelpful receptionist who was hard to understand, Restaurant not open for breakfast so had to get takeaway from Ryka's cafe over the road, couldn't even get a cup of tea or coffee, bedside light in room didn't work and room itself had very little natural light as gardens so overgrown, Balcony hadn't been cleaned in weeks, furniture was very dirty. How this is a 4* hotel I dont know, its at best a 2*. Such a shame as it used to be lovely

Dear Janice0283, Thank you for your feedback following your recent visit to the hotel. We are sorry that you felt that the wedding was not good as this is particularly surprising as we have done a number weddings since the lockdown measures were initially eased and we have received the most wonderful reviews from Brides, Grooms and their friends and families so we are exceptionally surprised to read this review. Please feel free to elaborate so that if there is corrective action to be taken then we can look into it. The restaurant is open for a cooked breakfast from Tuesday to Saturday, although in order to maintain social distancing then tables do have to be pre booked. The gardens are looked after and the grass is cut once a fortnight and there are no weeds or overgrown grass around the estate. Please rest assured that we will ask the gardener to make doubly certain that this is the case, but it really is looking most lovely at the moment despite the inclement weather. Once again, thank you for your comments.

I stayed a couple of nights recently a treat to myself. There was some kindness, but I was also puzzled about the difficulty of discovering which rooms had a view of Box Hill - something really important to me for various reasons. Worse, I have just received a car park fine for £60-100 - I had no idea - no idea - no idea that the car park was not part of the hotel, and no-one told me about this eg on arrival. I am now told it is 'obvious' - I arrived when it was dark. I don't see super well, so didn't pay any attention to notices because I assumed all was OK, being parking at the hotel. What a super drag. I appreciate difficulties due to covid, but really. Horrified.

The website is misleading. Too few staff have been brought back from furlough to bring the hotel and ground up to anything like a reasonable standard. Our room was in tired. However what was particularly disappointing was that it hadn't been cleaned properly. Cigarette butts remained in an ashtray on the balcony, the balcony didn't appear to have been swept or mopped for weeks, the shrubs in front of the balcony hadn't been tended to and were growing into the balcony and a drinks can was clearly visible. A room service tray with the remains of a meal sat on the floor in the corridor for at least 10 hours on the day of our arrival. Please employ a gardener and increase the housekeeping hours. The pool was drained and the area around it was overrun and untidy. Breakfast was a selection of 4 items left in a paper bag outside the bedroom door. Positively, the few staff on duty were friendly and helpful, rushing around to try and keep guest happy.

Dear London-Barney, Thank you for your comments following your recent stay at the hotel. In terms of the grounds then the grass is cut at least once a fortnight, the weeds are all removed and there are no overgrown hedges or bushes around the estate. The gardener will investigate this further but the grounds are looking lovely at the moment despite the inclement weather. We have also brought in new housekeeping team members to address the housekeeping issues and this now appears to be reaping rewards in the improved standard of housekeeping. The pool has been drained since before lockdown and is now beginning to be filled back up again but sadly in readiness for 2021. Of course, the surrounding area of the pool will be tidied up in readiness for 2021. We are pleased that you found the staff on duty to be friendly and helpful.
