On our recent visit to the George Hotel for a evening meal, we found the staff to very welcoming and friendly as usual. We were served by William who was attentive, helpful, an excellent waiter. The food we ordered was excellent as usual but the choices available were limited. As a vegetarian there was only one hot main option available. This is poor for a hotel restaurant. There was also no chef specials available.we were disappointed and there would need to be a change in the menu for us to visit again.

Attended the hotel for a wedding and stopped overnight, great hotel, good food, friendly staff, parking is private which is good, if car park is full due to an event a pay and display car park is right outside the hotel. Really good location to explore the beautiful surroundings if Lichfield. Very comfortable rooms with room service, each room had all the amenities you would require including mini bar.

SLEEP & ROOM: Stayed last night. Room 20 classed as 'Superior' on the 2nd floor. One of the worst nights sleep I've ever had. Room is pretty well opposite the 'Walkabout' late night bar/club. Doesn't close until 03.00am on a Sunday morning and by the time the noise from shouting drunk revellers outside died down it was 03:30. But let's back track. When I arrived in the afternoon the room was very stuffy with one window open (there are 3 single sash windows in this room with secondary glazing). Only 1 window opened (the others are sealed) and although the room description states there's 'air conditioning' this was not working. (I've now seen on another review site someone made this complaint back in June so clearly staff/management must know about issues with the air conditioning which have not been addressed a month on). Was out until 23:00. Got back and there was horrendous pounding in the room from a DJ and party from a function room on the 1st floor of the hotel. Was informed at the reception that this would stop at midnight (it did), but then there was the issue of the club outside. Reception had said there was a 'fan' in the wardrobe. Put this on to try and cool room down but was pretty ineffectual. Even with all windows shut and the secondary glazing you could still hear the terrible din opposite. This room cost some £130!! Their website states '...you'll feel right at home and enjoy a great night's sleep.' Couldn't have been further from the truth. Whilst it also states 'Due to the city centre location of this hotel some external noise may be heard' this is very misleading. It would be more accurate to say A LOT of external noise may be heard if your room faces the street until the 'Walkabout' club closes... sadly the earliest this venue closes is 23:00 at the beginning of the week, then midnight mid-week and then 03:00 at weekends. I was never informed of this, nor that there was a function on until midnight in the hotel which was extremely noisy and audible in this room too. Very poor. To quote the general manager again from the guest book 'Our aim here is to make your stay memorable...'. Memorable alright... sadly, for the wrong reasons. STAFF - they were ok but nothing special. In front of the guest book the general manager states that there is '... a strong emphasis on personal service and attention to detail...' I didn't find this at all... eg. 1) no-one on reception when I got back to the hotel c. 23:00 (someone came through from the door at the side and asked if anyone was looking after me - I had to say no.. he called over the counter and there was no response from the room off the reception. A guy then did turn up, taking his coat off, looked at me and just said 'yes?' in quite an abrupt manner looking as if The George Hotel was the last place he wanted to be working in; 2) no-one at reception when I went to hand keys in; 3) Staff not knowing what is or is not available for residents on the 24hr menu - I asked for a jacket potato and was told... 'you can only have sandwiches'. I mentioned I was pretty sure I could have jacket potatoes but the young lad assured me I couldn't so I ordered a beef sandwich. Wanted to sit at an empty table away from the bar but 2 tables were sticky and unclean (no member of staff had bothered to clean them after the previous people had left)so I went to the toilets, got some toilet roll and cleaned the table I wanted to sit at myself. The beef sandwich took c. 25 mins to arrive!! In that time I went to my room and got the guest book. It quite clearly stated that jacket potatoes and soup were available 24hrs. I pointed this out to the server who said 'Oh... I'll check'. He came back and while apologising saying I could have a jacket potato after all, by now (after 23:30) I was so hungry I'd lost the will to wait any longer and made do with the sandwich - it was ok; 4) Morning receptionist was borderline rude when I went to check out. No friendly greeting..' Did you have a nice stay?' [if she had of course I would have mentioned some of the above'.. 'Hope to see you again?'... that sort of thing. I'd left the room at 10:45 (you need to be out of the rooms at 11:00 unless you've paid an additional amount) and went down for a coffee. When I went to hand the key in she was more concerned whether I'd asked for a 'late checkout'? [to get more money out of the customer?]... I explained I'd actually left the room before 11:00 and had been having a coffee in the bar since that time. 'Oh... right'... was her response. Not made to feel welcome at this hotel at all. ADVICE FOR BOOKERS: Check what room you're going to be in and whether it faces the front of the street. During the week these rooms may be ok, but bear in mind the earliest the club closes is 23:00 so if you wish to go to bed earlier & want to get some sleep I'd avoid any room at the front. SUGGESTIONS FOR MANAGEMENT: Improve the customer service experience. My experience was certainly not one of '...personal service and attention to detail'.!! Make sure the amenities you advertise are all in working order. Review your charges for that room esp. as you know there are noise issues with it (and currently air conditioning ones) BREAKFAST - This was very good

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review on your 1 night stay with us. I am extremely sorry that your experience was not to our usual high standard. As reviews on this site will testify we receive many compliments about our staff and service. Feedback is important to us and your observations will be discussed with my management team. I do hope you gave them the opportunity at the time to discuss your issues. Please be assured your comments in regards to the noise from Walkabout Bar will be communicated to the local council as we work with them to help reduce noise levels in the vibrant City centre of Lichfield. Once again please accept my sincere apologies for the frustration and annoyance the issues your raised caused at the time.

We regularly go for Afternoon Tea there and it's always a great experience. Excellent food and tea. Cucumber, smoked salmon... Only the best sandwiches. The scones are freshly baked and just tje right texture. The cakes are delicious. The staff is very pleasant and well trained without being pompous. Finally, beautiful setting. We'll go back soon.
