Nestled in the heart of Bath, The Gainsborough Bath Spa garners acclaim for its prime location, within easy reach of local attractions, though the central setting can bring some noise. Guests celebrate the hotel for its spotless environment and commend the staff's outstanding service. The rooms are lauded for their cleanliness and comfort, yet some visitors have noted temperature control and noise issues. Despite the posh spa amenities, the value is debated due to costly extras and underwhelming breakfast options.

What a refreshing hotel. Not cheap as it’s Bath and a spa but worth every penny. Had a lovely 3 nights with my daughter to celebrate our birthdays. Staff very well trained and made us really welcome. Spa treatments were superb. Didn’t use the restaurant but it looked great! The twin room had 2 double beds and everything we could want with no laminated signs to be seen!

Brilliant location in the centre of the city so you can walk everywhere. The spa is a great bonus which you can visit early morning and during the evening if you are staying in the hotel. We visited at 8am on two occasions and whilst nice, it does get quite busy. We upgraded to an exec room although on reflection I’m not sure it was worth it. The room was fine but quite small and I think the only benefit is the mini bar is complimentary (beer and soft drinks). Our continental breakfast was included as we booked directly although anything cooked was an extortionate £40! All in all a good stay in a nice hotel - just not quite the ‘wow’ we were hoping for.

This is a lovely hotel and the pool is spectacular. They gave us a bottle of wine in our room. The water in the pool makes your skin feel really soft and there are various small rooms with different spa’s in and the water is lovely and warm. We really loved our stay.

We had a two night stay in the hotel and were impressed with every aspect of it. The staff in particular were wonderful and we liked the convenient position in the centre of Bath. The spa is very special with a main pool and two thermal baths. There were also two types of sauna and a steam room. The Georgian chocolate drink was much appreciated. We both had spa treatments, probably the best we ever had.

I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this centrally located and quiet hotel, which is within easy walking distance from the train station too . The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Spa treatment great and relaxing. In fact, so relaxing that I fell into a slumber. Thank you Alexandra! Breakfast variety and quality exemplary. Room spotlessly clean. Towels soft and lovely Elemis toiletries supplied. Complimentary soft drinks, water and beers supplied. If you have the time then do go on the Mayor’s Guides Bath walk. If you think you know all about Bath then you probably have no idea until you’ve joined one of the guides who give their time and knowledge for free. Thank you Paul!

What a lovely place to stay. The location is ideal, down a quiet street but within walking distance of plenty of restaurants and shops. Valet parking is available but very expensive so we parked in Southgate car park and 5 minute walk from hotel, a lot cheaper and secure for our 3 night stay. Very comfy bed and pillows, comp mini bar with soft drinks and plenty of tea and coffee (Nespresso machine). Bath is beautiful so much to see, take one of the guided walks which are free and meet outside the Pump Room very interesting.

I have been grappling with what to rate the Gainsborough because in reality, I would like to give it 3.5, reflecting the numerous issues we had for our 2-night stay. We were altogether 6, and had a King Suite and an Executive Room. We booked through American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts which has benefits of room upgrades amongst other things, but at check in, were told that they could not upgrade either room because the hotel was at full occupancy. That is perfectly understandable. The young person checking us in though was fairly new on the job and kept making errors. In fact, he came up to our rooms a few times because he forgot to hand us this & that. Although we greatly appreciated his efforts and eagerness to make right his inexperience, we felt that our check in was conducted in a haphazard manner. First up, the hotel is beautiful, elegant and classy. I chose it because of its classic, yet contemporary style, and the rooms look soothing and luxurious. However, there were shortcomings in the design, particularly in the King Suite. Firstly, the sofabed in the living room had a mattress which was the thinnest ever; you could literally feel every single spring underneath. In the bathroom, there were no bars nor hooks to hang towels, bathrobes and your clothes aside from the heated towel rail. Even that was a challenge to hang two towels and more. Thirdly, the wooden bedside tables can prove to be a hazard because a glass top was simply put on top and it is so easy for it to slide off. A few times, I was reaching for something and accidentally nudged the glass top, causing it to move sideways easily (see photo attached). Any stronger push, the glass would have toppled down and could have broken. Fourth, there was no ceiling light in the living room area and the table lights were simply insufficient to light up the room for any reading whatsoever. Lastly, still on lights - I was puzzled that the wardrobe did not light up when it was opened, a function of all typical standard hotel wardrobes. It was dark and there was no light in the area outside the wardrobe either, making it extremely difficult to see the contents of one's suitcases. I assumed that the light inside was not working, so went down to alert the front desk, who said they will send someone to rectify or replace it. The next day, I followed up again at the end of the day when there was nothing done to it. Again, they told me the same thing. This time, I decided to inspect the cupboard more thoroughly and found that actually, there isn't a light there in the first place! Why then did they tell me, on two different occasions, that they will come and "fix the light", when there isn't one to be fixed? There was no knowledge that the cupboards don't have lights installed and no follow up on my request twice. Another major kink (and this took all of 2 months to solve) was that we were charged an amount which was much higher than what we booked on the American Express Platinum travel portal. We did not find this out until we came home after our trip and found the erroneous charge on our card statement. When we booked the rate online at Fine Hotels and Resorts for the two rooms, we chose to "Pay at Hotel" that particular rate in GBP but saw that the rate Gainsborough charged us on check in day was at least GBP300 higher. We were also not given an invoice or receipt of the bill during check in and check out. I understand nowadays that hotels don't necessarily give you "a bill" upon checking out since the credit card number is already in their system. We also did not incur any additional charges throughout our stay. So, what followed was 2 months of back & forth with Amex Travel and Gainsborough Bath. I just could not understand why it took them such an effort and so long to find out what went wrong. Eventually, Amex refunded us the excess amount which was charged by Gainsborough, after what seemed like 15 phone calls and 2 months later. Lastly, this incident left a sour note in our stay. My mum used the spa and had a terrific massage with Adam, her therapist. I went to pick her up at the end of her massage because at 85 years old, she needed help in getting back to her room. I was waiting for her at the relaxation area, taking some photos, when the manager came to let me know that firstly, I was not allowed in this area since I did not have a massage (I was in fact shown to this place by a staff when I told her I was picking my mum up) and more importantly, I was not to use my phone to take any photos. She proceeded to ask me to delete the photos on my phone in front of her and promptly asked me to deposit it in a bag she had brought with her. She did all this in a rather curt and condescending manner and I was reminded that I had read another TripAdvisor review (July 2023) by a lady who experienced the same problem. Yes, you can come and let me know that phones & photos are not allowed in the area (mind you, there were absolutely no signs put up for that) and I would have respected that, but you can always do it in a gracious and non-accusatory manner. It wasn't as if I resisted or argued with her. I simply complied and apologised for my ignorance. I put my phone into the bag and it snapped locked. Moments later, my mum arrived and we were going to leave, but the manager had to get the key to unlock that bag with my phone in it. The whole experience just felt as if I was made to feel guilty and was punished for taking out my phone. Seriously, lock & key, need I say more! Like I mentioned earlier, the hotel is really lovely, the staff always friendly (except said spa manager) and willing to help. Breakfast was a highlight; the public rooms and restaurant areas are also gorgeous, and the location of the hotel perfect. So, as much as I wanted to like this hotel and give it a higher rating (I have only given a handful of 3 stars in the almost 300 hotels I have reviewed), given all the small and rather big incidents we were faced with on our short 2 night stay, I can't.

Stayed here for 2 nights over a weekend in January 2024. Initially stayed here in 2017 and vowed to revisit because it was exceptional. The staff went above and beyond and it was truly a delight. However this time around it was not on par. Our room had an unsanitary looking mark on the bedroom wall which we’d cleaned off before really even thinking about it, but really this is not acceptable. Our experience at the bar on a Saturday night was sub par. We ordered drinks and waited more than fifteen minutes for something to happen. Nothing did, and a couple had sat down after us and got served instantly. I cancelled the drinks and left for a restaurant reservation. That isn’t the type of service I’d expect from this establishment. Lift out of service wasn’t helpful with luggage. Spa as nice as ever, even with limited hours for hotel guests. The visit didn’t live up to our previous experience.
