I would probably avoid staying here again until they have restored full service -- it's too expensive as a bed for the night, and not luxurious enough for a pampering break. Pros: - Great central location - Affordable parking nearby (32gbp for 48 hours) - Spacious rooms, comfortable beds Cons: - Currently operating as a B&B (no restaurant serving lunch or dinner). This is not a covid measure: they apparently do not have a head chef on staff at present. - Room fit+finish wasn't up to 5* standard, things like worn-out upholstery on chairs, single glazed windows next to a noisy street, noisy AC. - Breakfast requires advance booking, on one of our days it was 9AM or nothing. 5 minute wait to be seated. 10 minute wait before our coffee was brought. Had to flag someone down to take our food order. Staff were clearly trying but overstretched. - Spa requires advance booking, and on one of our days there was only a spot available at our checkout time, which rather reduces the relaxation of the experience when you have to cut it short to hustle upstairs and vacate your room.

We stayed for one night on our first visit to Bath. On arrival the reception staff were very helpful. The room was beautiful and the bed was like sleeping on a cloud. The location is perfect! We used the Baths spa experience within the hotel which I highly recommend. We had drinks in the Bar which was cozy. We dined at Scallop shell in the town which served delicious seafood. Worth a visit. Breakfast was delicious! Again service amazing! We will definitely be back!! Thank you to all staff!

We had a lovely 2 nights stay at the Gainsborough recently. Our exec room was lovely, very stylish and thankfully it had good air con! We do think they could provide extras like biscuits and a minibar (every other hotel I have stayed at recently have these available still) but otherwise all good. The common areas of the hotel are beautiful and the place smells amazing. Shuka behind the bar is by far one of the best people I have come across in the hospitality industry. He makes everyone feel so welcome, is full of knowledge and really does make the best drinks! Breakfast was just ok, good eggs royale and pastries but terrible full english (sausages dry and the bacon had a strange texture) We are SLH members so we get breakfast on a complimentary basis but otherwise we would not pay £30pp. The spa was our highlight. Stunning pool with various jet spas to relieve muscle tension. They have 2 other pools plus steam rooms and a sauna. I also used the gym which was perfectly adequate.

We stayed for two nights in one of the bath spa rooms. These rooms have access to the thermal spa water so they are on the lower levels and we found that noise from the street was really intrusive, especially on the Friday night. In fact we were woken up throughout the night and into the early hours. If you want a more peaceful room I would suggest going for a different type of room on a higher floor. We didn’t realise until after leaving but our original booking promised a cocktail on arrival - we were never offered this. Our arrival letter also stated that we would receive a PPE pack (we didn’t.). In the room description it promises a candle as part of the arrival package. Unfortunately this wasn’t in our room but we did have a selection of other aromatherapy items. The room itself was lovely. Very clean and spacious. We were surprised that the shower head was so small, as when compared to the quality of the hotel it didn’t seem to match; however it worked fine, so this is just an observation. We enjoyed the spa area. It was as you would expect - very relaxing and immaculately clean. The hotel staff were all very polite and helpful. Overall this is a really lovely hotel and we would recommend.

The hotel has a blink and you miss it exterior. It’s in quite a hidden narrow back street. Tip - no parking. We parked in Avon street car park which is just under a 5 mins walk away. Annoyingly you have to extend your ticket at 8am each morning!! No reminders (even when paid for a text reminder on the app). It was £15 for a full day. The hotel is very quiet. The restaurant is closed and the bar was only open 6-11pm. I’m assuming this is all because of Covid. Again the bar was super quiet. Shuka who works behind the bar was the epitome of what you’d hope for in a place like this. He was an absolute gentlemen and friendly too and clearly passionate about his job. We turned down breakfast at the hotel. £60 for a couple? This seems a crazy price. We did a google search and we had our breakfast 2-3 mins away at The Wild Cafe. Food was amazing here. Our room was ok. Bed was nice and comfy and the ceilings huge. Lots of cupboard and drawer space but nowhere to sit and do hair and make up. The table that was designed for this had a huge TV on it. No instructions on how to use the coffee machine (we have a different brand so weren’t familiar with theirs). No room service menu or welcome pack giving you any information about the spa etc. The shower was probably the most powerful shower I’ve ever stood under! Loved having a shower. However, the bathroom itself is more like a 3 star hotel. We’ve stayed in 4 and 5 star hotels and with many being a slighter cheaper price point than the Gainsborough but either had a copper bath, or a double rain shower, ambient lighting , or had a wow factor etc etc. This was a standard bathroom that you probably have nicer at home (!!) with no frills and not even 2 sinks and had a cheap £3 Asda type bin. Very underwhelmed and definitely not 5 star. We stayed in an executive room and I’m sure the suites may have wow factor rooms but for the price we paid we could have got the wow factor elsewhere. Staff were all extremely polite, friendly and attentive at reception. I met a tradesman in the lift and he even cared my room was to my satisfaction. The spa was lovely. Clean and looked just like it does on the website. You can have a 1hr slot each day you are there. For me an hour was plenty but nobody is checking so I’m sure if you went slightly over it was fine. All in all the hotel is quiet and pleasant with wonderful staff but personally for this price point I’d expect rooms with much better bathrooms and finer touches.
