As many have said, it is a very grand hotel but it really does need updating and a bit of TLC put back into it. Parking is chargeable which is shocking considering the price of the rooms, should be included. The rooms themselves albeit dated do the job and the bed was nice and comfy, but the room was so stuffy! Unable to open windows and the aircon switched to ‘heat’ resulted in a very uncomfortable night, even when we had a fan. The receptionist just shrugged this off in the morning, saying ‘they are automatically changed to heat’ and ‘we should have asked for a fan’ (which we had, and the noise of it only contributed to the bad sleep!). Not what you’d expect for a hotel which charges so much! We really enjoyed the spa treatments and facilities, indoor and outdoor pools, and couldn’t fault the spa staff either. Yes there are a few tiles missing here and there but otherwise it’s well kept and felt clean and COVID safe - as did the rest of the hotel may I add. The quality of the food I wouldn’t say was of ‘AA rosette’ standard or ‘award winning’ other than the prices. We’d booked a package that specifically stated a ‘two course dinner’, instead of a package ‘with a contribution towards dinner’, but as we sat down we were told it was a £30pp contribution, which barely covered the main meals! Thankfully both the restaurant manager and the night receptionist were very understanding and said the manager would settle it in the morning. Nevertheless this did put a bit of a downer on what was supposed to be a relaxed birthday meal. That aside, couldn’t fault the restaurant manager and his assistants, all were very personable and attentive, and they also arranged a birthday dessert for me which was really sweet of them, thank you to the chap who brought it up to our room, really made my birthday! Granted the hotel settled our dinner bill, but we felt we couldn’t enjoy dinner as much as we’d have liked as we didn’t know if we’d be charged for something we’d already paid for, or not, in the morning. We were told two other parties had this problem the day before, so it was a shame the hotel acted none the wiser to it, and tried to only offer us the £30pp contribution. When we pointed out in the morning that the same package, and others that they ‘don’t offer’, were still on sale, it again was just shrugged off. There didn’t seem to be any urgency of doing anything about it, so goodness knows how many more people will have/had the same issue! Overall we’d have expected better hospitality than received considering the circumstances (would have thought they’d want to deliver 10/10 service for the guests they are getting through the door - I again repeat, hats off to the restaurant manager), and the hotel itself was COVID secure with plenty of sanitiser and clear procedures in place. Just a shame about the heat in the room and ridiculous parking costs, no matter how clear they make it.

We stayed for two nights at the hotel and could Not recommend it highly enough! Beautiful building very clean and clear Covid guidelines and precautions in place. Although it is annoying having to pay the parking fee this is made very clear when you book so shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. The room was lovely. Big. Clean. Well equipped with refreshments and toiletries. Staff were friendly and approachable. Spa and pool were lovely. Everything was very clean and due to booking your own slot we were able to use all the different sauna/steam rooms without waiting. Breakfast was very nice. Good choice good portion and good service! Absolutely no negatives with our stay and we would love to return!

I stayed here for a two day family break in October. Firstly the positives. The location is good - it's only a 10-15 minute walk along beautiful Bath streets to the centre of the city; the reception staff were very welcoming and polite; the hotel is definitely in the 'grand' category; the spa / pool were lovely, especially the hydro spa and thermal suites (though do note you have to book in advance due to Covid restrictions - we only managed to get one slot and I saw quite a few people being told that there were none available); breakfast in the restaurant was good (though they could do with a few more staff on duty as service was slow and they had run out of pastries by 9:15am); the fluffy robes for the spa were particularly nice; lots of COVID related precautions (gel / staff with masks / visors etc) The negatives. The hotel is tired. I think it was refurbed in 2007, and to be honest it looks like it has been well used. The rooms had plenty of scuffed paint / peeling window sills; the duvets were heavy polyfibre rather than breathable feather / down as would be expected these days in a hotel that charges £250 per night; the main lounge / bar area lacks imagination / atmosphere / staff (we had to go to reception to get someone to order a drink); the bathrooms are dated (and we had to clean a few hairs from the bath before use); the furniture and decor in the rooms is unimaginative - we had a 'Garden View double' which was 'ok' but again nothing special and certainly did not look like a £250 room. The hotel in general seems to lack the necessary extra touches - for example why not light the large fireplace in the entrance hall in autumn / winter months? I suspect this hotel is suffering from being part of a large chain (MacDonald) and whilst I fully understand the current issues with COVID the problems discussed above would have predated the crisis. Essentially I suspect the parent company is reluctant to invest / maintain the hotel and sadly this means that people will seek other options, so it will become a vicious circle of underinvestment vs falling numbers. Finally as discussed on many other reviews the £15 parking charge is a bit much given the room prices. Yes I know that parking in Bath is expensive etc etc, but this is a 'country house hotel' on the outer edges of the city with plenty of parking available. It's easy enough to regulate parking without charging guests for the pleasure.

Response from Bath Spa, General Manager at MacDonald Bath Spa Hotel

Thank you for your review. Our patent company is currently investing in the refurbished of some of our room to bring them up to scratch. Unfortunately many of the extra touches have had to be removed from the rooms due to covid, but we shall certainly reinstate as soon as we feel it is safe.

For the price I was a little disappointed with the size of the room and the bathroom cleanliness/scale/dis repair. Managed to get room service once but other attempts failed as calls were not answered. Everything took a bit of effort to be honest. Even had to ask twice for toilet roll in the ladies loo in the gym/pool changing. The breakfast was good and the pool very nice and big. 15 quid for hotel guests parking per day is a bit excessive on top of room cost. Wouldn't stay again based on that really.

A really fabulous hotel we have visited over 20 years. Rooms excellent, food exceptional, well run spa despite the Covid rules and ...... after a wonderful trip to Cornwall with mediocre hotels this was a refreshing experience
