The Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel, nestled in a picturesque location ideal for exploring Bath, receives mixed feedback. While the setting and decor are often commended for their beauty, some guests have called out issues with room cleanliness and maintenance. Service has been a point of contention, with slow responses and breakfast complications impacting stays. Despite the elegance of the spa amenities, many find them outdated and not reflective of the hotel's five-star status, leading to disappointment regarding overall value.

We had our wedding reception at the end of January with 25 guests and had the most amazing day ! Cat Johnson was our wedding planner and we cannot thank her enough for all her hard work organising our day - she is a star ! Beautiful venue, great food, lovely grounds, really good value for money as well and we highly recommend the MacDonald hotel !

Oh dear. What disappointment of a visit. This so-called 5 star Hotel has lost its way and is a serious need of a refurbishment. From the outside, it looks grand. The steps up to the hotel are lined with red carpet that is worn and dirty due to the rain that soaks it. There is an instant feeling of "where is everybody?" As we checked in, we felt welcomed and given our room key. Walking to lift to head up to our room, the corridors loomed tired and in desperate need of a redecoration. With no artwork or pictures on the wall. We had room 310, and when we entered, it instantly looked tired. The double bed was two singles pushed together. The bathroom was presented in marble, chrome taps, and an aged pointless bidet, which I wondered why it was needed these days. After unpacking and settling in for a lovely evening, we noticed that the bathroom had no cold water supply. We couldn't flush the toilet nor shower as the hot water could strip your skin off in seconds. We called to reception in the evening to ask for it yo be fixed, to be told that there were no maintenance services until the morning.. AND if we wanted water to go to the bar! I think the night shift at reception didn't really care. We dined at the restaurant, and the impression was equally the same as the corridor, all a little drab and in need of investment. The dining room is large but lacks atmosphere and has a feel of an oap home dining hall. Heading off to bed for the night washing our teeth in scalding hot water and unflushed toilet. Waking up the next morning, we started to see the room for what it was. Dreadfully mould and damp on windows, poorly painted doors, and cabinets. The carpet needed a good clean. It all felt grubby. Without being able to shower, we headed to reception to again report the lack of cold water, to which the confused reception member if staff didn't know what to do. Cut a highly boring next fee strps out, we finally convinced the hotel to move us to another room. With the same level of enthusiasm, we packed up and moved rooms. We'll technically think the room we moved to was a downgrade as we had two single beds and a lovely view over the car park. When we headed over to the pool using the supplied dressing gown, which was really small. we were underwhelmed by what we saw. A pool big enough for a children's party, an outside heated pool which should be closed down. Tiles are missing from the pool edge and in serious need of an overhaul. Having breakfast there is a con. If you pay for B&B, then you'll get a basic menu and buffet. If you dare to ask for avocado, beans, then they'll be a £6 supplement to pay. Service is ok, we got the feeling as before that they are running the restaurant on skeleton staff. There are just not enough staff to supply the 5* standard that we paid for. Food quality is matched with any other breakfast place, but at £307 a night, we expected higher quality in every aspect of this hotel. When we checked out, they dared to add a "discretionary gratituity" of just over £16. We asked them yo remove that!... It is a shame that this grand building is degrading into a hotel whose owners are obviously not wanting to keep up the standards if a 5* grade. I would avoid this hotel as there are plenty of lovely hotels in Bath at a fraction of the price.

My husband and I came for a romantic break away having stayed here in December and having a lovely time last time. However this time I was so disappointed. We got here at 7pm ish having travelled 2.5 hours after a hard days work. So all I was looking forward to was a nice shower and then a relaxing evening. Our room , when we arrived , seemed to have no cold water, so every time we tried to turn the shower on, or the cold tap for cleaning our teeth, it was scalding hot!!! I managed to have a very very quick shower enough to get me wet, but it was boiling hot!! The toilet didn’t flush either. We phoned reception and was told that no one was available until the following day! We gave them the benefit of the doubt and went down for an evening meal at their restaurant . On coming back to the room , nothing was sorted , so we went to bed without a shower and hoped that in the morning it would have sorted itself out. We brushed our teeth in boiling water and went to sleep. Woke up next morning and nothing had changed. Couldn’t have a shower or bath so had to go down to breakfast dirty and very frustrated. We notified reception again and insisted we needed to move rooms. They didn’t really seem to understand our frustrations but eventually moved us. No help with packing up, and we had to wait ages for the new key. My husband ended up having to go back to reception again where the key was just sitting on reception desk. Once we finally got into our room, we discovered it was a twin room! Not great for a romantic weekend away! We had no slippers with our spa gowns so had to ask for some. I just feel that for the price we paid (which was a lot), we just didn’t feel we got value for money at all! I def wouldnt say this was 5* at all! I’m so disappointed and in the end we went into town because we really didn’t want to stay at the hotel. Our room was run down, there was paint peeling off the window panes, it just looked so tired and unimpressive. I don’t think I will be coming back which is just a shame as we really needed this weekend away for rest and relaxation, and I ended up feeling stressed and frustrated!!

The hotel is a spectacular building but unfortunately we didn’t have a hotel and spa experience to match. There aren’t anywhere near enough staff, the spa is a total disappointment (not sure the people raving about it below can have ever been to a good one), the food was ok and the room was lovely. They need to sort out the spa though, there are sections of the exterior pool wall hanging off and the tiles are a disaster. Having said that, the bed was comfortable, the staff that are there do their best but for 350 pounds per night, I expected a lot more.

Very average experience sadly. Changing room very small and over crowded. We were not shown around the spa so had no idea there was a relaxation room until we went for our treatment. Pool area is tired and the out door pool whilst a lovely temperature not what I’d expect of a 5 star hotel. In fact the area around is dangerous. Whilst the facial I had was lovely the treatment room was cold Afternoon tea in the hotel was lovely but the service again not what I’d expect from a 5 star hotel, despite booking a time slot we had to wait 20 minutes for the food to be brought and had to ask for tea and coffee, which took a further 20 minutes to arrive. Lack of staff is clearly affecting this hotel

Not 5 star at all. We had to wear coats in bar and restaurant it was so cold. Breakfast was better at Premier Inn and less than half the price. No staff to order drinks from bar or lounge. Dinner was bland. Bed was lovely. Really comfortable. Really disappointed.
