Stayed 2 nights. Lovely hotel with excellent facilities. Close to centre of Oxford bus stops on the road outside easier than parking in centre. Excellent food in the restaurant and good selection for breakfast.

Following a complete mess by the hotel regarding our booking in the first place, we arrived today and having settled into our deluxe room with balcony after a long drive, we were assailed by loud banging. On enquiring about this, we were told that the hotel was being refurbished and that this took place FROM 9AM - 5PM each and every day of our 4 night stay. Yes, we were shown 2 other (smaller/poorer) rooms, one had no a/c (it seems that many don’t here) and the other had a small window only from shoulder height up. Neither had a balcony. I find it extraordinary that a hotel charging these rates does not have a/c, but more importantly they think that it is acceptable to say that you can’t reasonably use rooms from 9-5 because of the noise. There must have been many other guests affected by the noise. On deciding that we could not stand it, we left the hotel. We were reluctantly offered free parking for the 2 hours we were there and on leaving were told “enjoy your stay” by one of the robotic members of staff who was dealing with our issue. It would also be helpful if the staff on reception could speak better English. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

My daughter and I visited Oxford for a couple of nights. The hotel was okay and served its purpose but a little clinical. The continental quilts on the beds were very thin and the quilts were ripped which wasn’t a great advert for the hotel. It was very convenient to be able to walk along the river in to the city of Oxford as you do not really want to be taking a car in to Oxford so that was a plus. Thought it was expensive for what it was.

This place was in need of some maintenance and repairs. They were in the process of installing AC in the rooms. The water pressure was anemic. The bed was lumpy. Many broken pieces on the window latches. The food was pretty good, but there was no gift or sundries shop in the hotel.

We've stayed in most of the hotels in oxford over the past few years, and this is probably the best decent standard modern one near the town. Many of the others are more old style with limited parking. This hotel charges £7.50 per day to park, but for Oxford, which is not a car-friendly town, that’s not bad. Some of the other hotels have no parking at all. Principles is in a great location, a few yards from the Thames path so its super for walking. The buildings sprawl and the rooms vary a lot. We stayed for a long weekend for a wedding with a group including a lot of friends and family members/couples . The wedding wasn’t at the Principles, but the hotel staff were very helpful regarding wedding cars and buses arriving to pick up folk etc It has been under new ownership for the past few months and they seem to be struggling with some things. Air con is being upgraded, so our room didn't have any which wasn't a problem as weather had cooled off, but I suggest check first if it’s important for you. The only number published is answered in USA and they know nothing about which rooms are which, air con etc. so you have to email and hope for a meaningful reply. Of the 3 suites, 2 are located in a second floor section which does NOT have a lift. Some other rooms also do not have lifts. So again check that if you are booking a suite/room and stairs are a problem. The suite was roomy but décor etc could be better, especially in the sitting room which was a bit drab, no pictures or any lamps or soft lighting or any frills, not really a room where you’d want to sit for an evening. We also stayed a couple of weeks previously in a room. The IHG website and central bookings by phone (in USA not at the hotel despite what they try to pretend!) both said it was full, but rooms were available via Trip Advisor and Booking.com etc which no one could explain. There seemed to be no way of actually phoning the hotel itself. So overall we will stay again, but will check which room we are offered and where it is before unloading our luggage. Note also the hotel used to be called/owned by the De Vere, and before that the Four Pillars and some travel companies , guides etc still have the old names. Some rooms have balconies. The rooms facing the river can suffer from noisy parties along the river bank, outside the hotel grounds. Also at present some rooms suffer from noise due to refurbishment works.
