I have just spent 4nights at the Monkbar hotel. Went to York races on Friday and Saturday had a fantastic time. The hotel is excellent good food and great choice of meals. The staff could not be any more helpful. Highly recommended all around.

Really enjoyed staying at this hotel on a very busy weekend, friendly staff. Clean room, comfy bed. The decor of the hotel is modern obviously due to the refurbishment, the bathroom clean, toiletries appear good quality. Loved it, would stay here again, good location to centre of York.

Room 302 in the attic. Nice room but as it was really hot outside the small window was really insufficient. The hotel gave us a fan, but it made limited difference. Go for 100s and 200s in the rooms. Decor beautiful. Communal areas lovely. Outside courtyard was especially pretty. Staff, particularly the restaurant supervisor, were really great. Nothing too much... More

I chose to use BW as I spend nearly 180 nights away from home a year, originally it included early checkin, free newspaper, late checkout, room upgrades and if you qualified two years running as 30 nights stays, you became Diamond member for life. Nearly, having qualified for this they did away with Diamond for life, introduced a new tier,... More

I spent one night at this hotel with 5 other business colleagues and we each had separate rooms. Every room that we occupied was newly refurbished, well appointed and nicely decorated. My own room was large with a modern en-suite bathroom which also contained a walk-in shower. Tea and coffee making facilities were provided together with quality biscuits and bottled... More

Paid £235 for 1 night in twin room. This was not value for money because although a well sized room, bathroom small with no working extractor fan and no window, shower not at all powerful and over bath, non-slip bath mat did not stick to bottom of bath and therefore slid, bath appeared to have been cleaned with something that... Would happily stay again. Stayed for three nights Sat-Mon. Easy to drive to and an excellent location, literally a minute (if that) walk to the city walls and into the old streets. Hotel has been recently refurbished and felt light and bright and well laid out with courtyard. Spacious room, with Juliet balcony; good blackout curtains. No air conditioning, which... More

Having just returned from a few days in York. We were delighted to have stayed in this hotel. We had a room overlooking the courtyard below which was a nice place to have a drink or two. The staff were really friendly the rooms were clean the breakfast was great. If I had any complaint it would be the lack... More

Stayed here for two nights, midweek. It's located just outside the city wall and proved to be an excellent base to see all the touristy stuff. We'd read a few reviews and noted some comments about the busy road. As a result, we asked for a room at the back of the hotel and it was spot on. The hotel... More

Situated just outside the city walls this hotel has been recently refurbished, and the lounge/bar, dining room and delightful courtyard are consistent with 4 star rating, but unfortunately not the rooms. There is no double glazing, aircon, or fridge in the rooms. It was so hot we had to sleep with the windows open (despite being given a fan). Unfortunately... More
