Travelers' Choice
Welcome to The Grand, York's first and only AA five-star rated hotel. This stunning hotel opened in May 2010 following the extensive refurbishment of the former North Eastern Railway headquarters – one of York’s most iconic Edwardian buildings. Originally constructed in 1906 as a ‘Palace of Business’ for what was then one of the most powerful public companies in the country, today it is the region’s leading luxury hotel and has established a global reputation for its first-class service, stylish bedrooms and unique historic atmosphere. Following a £15 million refurbishment in 2017, The Grand now boasts 207 individually designed bedrooms, a beautiful spa to relax, a destination restaurant, a cocktail bar and meeting & event spaces. There is something for everybody to enjoy - we look forward to welcoming you soon!

No valet parking, no turn-down service, a half-hour wait for breakfast with a paper cup of coffee, wrong breakfast order...for £350 a night! OK, so some of this is attributable to COVID-19, although I have stayed in several hotels in recent months in the UK and Europe which seemed to be coping far more successfully with COVID-control measures. Even in normal times, this would not be a five star hotel. The staff are overstretched, inattentive and don't seem to be trained in a good standard of service. The rooms are spartan and feel slightly grimy. My overall conclusion is that the Grand only gets away with calling itself a five star hotel because it markets itself to voucher tourists who don’t know any better.

We have just returned from a 2 night stay at the Grand which my husband booked as a birthdaytreat. He booked the chocoholic package which was brilliant 2 night bed and breakfast, chocolate afternoon tea and a tour of the York Chocolate Story. The afternoon tea was lovely a real treat and the chocolate martini was a nice touch. The room was really nice, clean and spacious with some lovely little touches, fluffy dressing gowns, molton brown toiletries, shortbread biscuits and a bose speaker in the bathroom! The hotel is managing the Covid pandemic brilliantly a little amenity pack was left in the room which had masks, wipes and hand gel in and all the staff wore masks/visors which set a great example . The rooms weren't serviced while we were there (although this would have happened had we requested)but we were left a set of clean towels, toiletries etc on the second day which we didnt gave to ask for.We had lots of emails prior to our stay to inform us of check in times, spa facilities, parking etc which made sure we could book 2 slots for the pool/spa. It may be slightly more expensive compared to other hotels but it is worth the money to treat yourselves. Dont take notice of the few bad reviews on here I think these people are very fussy. I will definitely return and recommend the grand.

Myself and my partner stayed at The Grand York the weekend of the 25th to the 27th September. I would just like to take the time to thank all the staff for the amazing service. We are both NHS workers (midwife and doctor) and fancied a relaxing break in the city. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with a warm welcome and friendly smiles. Our room was an executive room which was lovely. All toiletries provided and restocked, fresh towels before we even had chance to use our clean ones, great choice of drinks. The 2 bathrooms were a great touch and the speakers and underfloor heating added an extra special feel. I have stayed in many hotels around the world and can tell that this hotel lives up to its 5 stars. I also want to comment on how well the staff have adapted to the COVID-19 measures. Hand sanitiser provided in packs in the rooms, wipes, masks, one way system and a fair chance to book a slot to use the spa facilities. The breakfast was absolutely delicious, despite not offering a buffet service due to recent changes, the hot and cold choices were great and we were able to order a good selection of food. We had a slight delay on the Saturday morning but drinks and food were offered while we waited. The waiter in the restaurant was very polite, happy and the service was excellent. Nothing was too much trouble, it started to rain as we were going out and within 10 minutes an umbrella was brought to our room. Thank you to everyone at this hotel for making our weekend one to remember.

Wouldn’t hesitate to book again I booked The Grand for my boyfriends birthday and what a fab time we had. The staff are EXCELLENT. They treat you like absolute royalty and so a 5 star hotel should too. Slightly more pricey than a normal hotel room but definitely worth the extra £40-£50. York was extremely busy when we visited this weekend so I didn’t have a huge hotel choice with it being 3 weeks before the date I wanted to go - so I got lucky here. Upon arrival, the staff booked us in efficiently. They took lots of steps towards the COVID-19 social distancing measures. We were placed in room 504 which was the top floor and a lovely little room. The hotel has continually messaged me in the running weeks to our stay to see if there was any preferences to personalise our stay. I requested a high floor and also more pillows. - which was granted! I had messaged the hotel to leave a balloon in the room for my boyfriend which they did with pleasure. They also left us some lovely chocolates. The room was spacious and ofcourse clean. We were offered a hand with our luggage and every single member of staff greeted you upon passing. The TV in the room was great, it had lots of smart features and the speakers played in the bathroom ceiling. You even had the choice to check out via the TV. The bathroom had under floor heating which was a luxury and also molten brown toiletries. There was robes and slippers in the room where we just popped these on and went straight down to the spa in the lift. I had pre booked an hour slot. There was limited people in the spa with covid - literally 3 or 4 people so it was easy to just sit and relax in the hot tub. The ladies changing rooms also had straighteners (handy!) We went out for food in the evening so cannot comment on the restaurant evening food. We got room service for 2 alcoholic beverages which was delivered to the room quickly. There is plenty of lovely tea and coffee facilities in the room and these are all top standard brands. Bed was comfy. Breakfast was served 7:30-10:30 in the rise restaurant. This was my ONLY issue with our stay - we were made to sit doen and wait to be seated and were sat for around half an hour. It was a bit of a shambles, the poor lady trying to sort us all out was run raggid trying to sort everyone a table. However, On getting in, the breakfast was top standard and the service in there was top quality to match. Quite pricey if you don’t have it included in your stay but worth the extra for breakfast if you have the option. Will most definitely return to this hotel if we come to York again! TIP - room 504 was beautiful. Also - if you go out in York, make sure you book not only a table for food but for drinks too. Big mistake by us! Couldn’t get in anywhere.

After all things cancelled with Covid we had 3 days at this wonderful hotel. 3 nights in heritage suite. The room was only 10 years old but the room had a 1970s Feel with furniture. The staff were great and the hotel was set up well for Covid 19. The ruse resteraunt for breakfast and evening food was great. Trevor was great. Not a lover of afternoon tea but tried it and if you like that kind of thing then you will love it here.
