We had a very nice time at the Grand which is very well located for railway station and central York. The staff were generally very friendly and efficient. Breakfast was good and the evening meal we had was fine. We stayed in a Heritage Suite (306) in the main (old) building which was well appointed. A few issues meant that we cannot give a 5 star rating: - we, in accordance with the hotel's instructions, booked an hour spa slot to go swimming, changing in our room as requested - for 4pm on a Monday afternoon - on arrival at spa - there was no checking of booking - changing rooms for ladies had wet floor and was busy - and between the small pool and the jacuzzi there were 20 people - impossible to swim and in no way relaxing.... we left after five minutes - not acceptable for a 5 star - if you have rules - make sure they apply to everyone - information and coordination of front desk was a little lacking (not told paper and minibar were complimentary) - minor points - missed one night turndown and minibar not refreshed/glasses taken away As a word of warning - this is a city centre hotel in a listed building - so although the bed and bedding was very comfortable and we had no problem with internal noise - the fact that they I presume cannot install anything other than secondary glazing meant that we were woken both mornings at around 5.15 by street cleaning machine sounds.…
Stayed 2 nights bed and breakfast. The food was spot on, the breakfast was good quality and served hot. The staff were very attentive and smart. The room was of good size and the bathroom clean. The spa/pool was a lovely experience and highly recommended. Thanks for making our stay one to remember.
My husband and I had toured the Yorkshire dales twice before with a wonderful man named Alan. We had planned to go again this spring but sadly when I tried to book with Alan I discovered he had passed. We decided to go to york during our stay in the UK and pay our respects to this sweet man. Upon checking in to the Grand, we discovered the head concierge was a personal friend of Alan and his widow. He was kind enough to call her and ask if we could speak to her. We had a wonderful telephone visit. During our two nights and three days at the Grand everyone was friendly, warm, and personable. You just had to ask and each person you spoke to went out of their way to help you with any issue. At the end of our stay we hugged Jordi goodbye and promised to return. That is a promise we hope to keep!…
This impressive pile is near very handy for the city centre and across from one of the main access points for walking the city walls. The liveried staff are very personable and all of them speak to guests; the atmosphere of friendliness is clear and pleasing. The restaurant seems to have dropped certain things since our last visit some five years ago - gone is the starched white table linen. However, service is efficient and friendly. The hotel is equipped by funky taps in the baths and hand basins. These require a certain skill and patience to master and often the settings can cause difficulty; it was on the fourth day that we realised that they really need replacing with something simple and functional. The spa and pool is nice with decent changing rooms and associated facilities. A good class hotel with good standards and lovely staff.…
Highly recommend. The staff are friendly welcoming and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. Perfectly situated for exploring York and only a short walk from the train station. Hendricks afternoon tea is well worth booking too
The Grand is everything you could wish for in a fabulous hotel, location is great, staff is just amazing, so friendly and helpful, facilities excellent, food delicious! I can honestly and confidently recommend to anyone wanting a fantastic, experience, staying here made our visit to York so special and I can’t wait to visit again, thank you
We stayed in room 048 in the newer part of the hotel overlooking the street . Could not fault the room plenty of towels , face cloths decent sized beds spotless. Minor point we had to stir our hot drinks with the handy nail file from the bathroom as there was not a stirring stick in the tray . Oh the fridge was NOT WORKING at all !! light was on everything inside warm . Thought a good idea would be to put a fridge thermometer inside so house keeping could see at a glance if the temperature was incorrect . Door staff excellent very helpful, nice to see this .
Grand by name and nature, proper old school 5* service from the doorman right through to the people in the back ground that you often never see. We have stayed here a number of times now and can’t wait for our next visit. On the Friday night they had a young singer in the bar, she was fantastic!
The Grand has the friendly but discreet service, and comfortable luxury one would hope from a 5 star hotel. Excellent dinner in the lovely restaurant. Its location very good for walking to the city centre, or the station, but it was quiet at night.
What a fantastic hotel. A short walk from the train station and right by the city walls this hotel is a delight from start to finish. The service is impeccable, very warm, courteous and with great attention to detail - nothing is too much trouble. I particularly appreciated the concierge who showed me to my room telling me the history of the hotel and pointing out the original features. The room was a great size, very spacious, including a large bathroom with Milton brown products. Super comfortable bed and a fantastic nights sleep. I’d asked for a quiet room and they certainly delivered. The 1906 bar had a good selection of cocktails for pre dinner drinks and you’re only a short walk from the multitude of restaurants in the city. Breakfast was a sumptuous affair with everything you could possibly want to eat including the best croissants. I didn’t get to use the spa facilities or the cookery school which are also on site. My only wish is that I couldn’t have stayed longer.…
