We were 5 couples visiting Whitby for the weekend who spent quite a bit of our visit in different bars and restaurants. We visited the Duke of York on a number of occasions for food and drink,on all visits the staff were friendly, polite and good at their jobs. The food was good value for money, freshly prepared and well presented we particularly... This pub is one of our favourites in whitby and we have been calling in for over 25 years... in that time it has hardly changed... It is located at the bottom of the 199 steps that lead upto the church and Abbey above Whitby and has excellent views across the harbour and up to the West Cliff opposite or... More

Spent a weekend at the Duke of York. The rooms are small, cheap and perfectly acceptable with a great view of the river (at least from Room 5). I wouldn't want to spend a long time there but I'm sure that is not the intention. These are great pub rooms.

Prior communication with this place suggested poor parking across the whole of Whitby and no booking confirmation received except after a verbal enquiry. You can, in fact, drive up there and drop your bags off. Bar staff supplied room keys and took bill payment so still not sure who owns this or is in charge here. Room 4 (£65.00 and... More

We stopped in room five for two nights, it was a little bit quirky, the room was odd, everything seemed at an odd angle, but we loved it, it was a very old building, so full of character, the room was just the right size, very clean, with a great harbour view, it had its own entrance at the pub... I have to say I have spent time in better places to eat. There were flies everywhere. Very hot as no air con. Decor tired and toilets need checking more often as paper all over the floor. However it was an exceptionally hot day. And very busy If you can see past all of the above I would recommend this... More

For the money we thought it was dear and no breakfast included. Poor service in our opinion for people staying overnight as just over the bar communication.. Whitby is a lush place, What we got a was bed with nice view. The room was poor but the view over harbour was nice. I hope this helps. :)

The place seems to have a black fly infestation and needs treating, I've seen similiar flies in scruffy places, didn't know what was worse the flies or staff attitude in dealing with the concern. I pointed the flies out to staff but didn't want to know !
