The hotel itself looks and feels just like a rather grand, 300-year-old town house, complete with richly furnished drawing room, library, parlour and courtyard garden. Our characterful bedrooms are all furnished with genuine antiques and named after real people who lived in the area. Our bathrooms all have period fittings, refurbished, of course, to modern standards of efficiency.

For a glimpse of Georgian and Victorian London at its most pristine, or a peek into what's apt to be the next big global trend, the hipster zone of Spitalfields can provide hours of amazement. Around the clock, this is a haven for early morning bargain hunters sizing up its street markets, foodie foragers throughout the day, or late night revelers hitting some of London's most popular bars and clubs.

Wedged between the business-minded City of London, expressly trendy Shoreditch, and zestful Whitechapel, the lines between traditional and contemporary beautifully blur in this historic East End nexus.

You can leave your luggage with the concierge, we did. I think check in is 3pm. Check their website to confirm.

There aren't but I asked for a tea and coffee when I got their and a fantastic tray was brought up which I don't believe we were charged for. You have breakfast in your room as standard (usually pay extra for!) but can also ask for it to be served in the library, tapestry room etc as they don't have a restaurant. There is also an honesty bar downstairs
