Even before the arrival of the instantly iconic Shard, the riverside scene in Southwark had moved well beyond any up-and-coming phase of development. For quite some time, locals and out-of-towners alike have loved browsing the boutiques of Bermondsey High Street, foraging through the bounteous stalls at centuries old foodie haven Borough Market, and flocking to the banks of the Thames to enjoy some of Britain's biggest attractions such as Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe. Despite Southwark's many popular draws, instant calm can be achieved easily by turning down almost any side street. For more urban buzz, a quick stroll across famed bridges like the pedestrianized Millennium Bridge or the ever photogenic Tower Bridge yields access to the very core of Central London. And with London Bridge Station as this neighborhood's main transportation hub, getting across town (or to anywhere in England for that matter) is a relative breeze.

Booked this hotel 6 months ago when we decided to go to Wimbledon this year. I am so glad we chose the Shangri-La at the Shard. Amazing views from every corner. Our room overlooks the Thames, city of London, London bridge and a glimpse of the Tower bridge. Check in was smooth and the lobby is located at the 35th floor, again with expansive view of London. The room was beautiful and modern with a large bathroom. It was nice to have 2 bottles of water. My partner was slightly upset that we did not get the 3 amenities that we have chosen 2 days prior to arrival. Breakfast was not as extensive as some of the Shangri-Las in Asia but the view and service made up for it. On the 2nd day, we were seated at the same table as the first day. The wait staff saw that we were disappointed with the same table, he took the initiative to find and move us to another table with a different views. We were really impressed by the service. The Doorman was excellent as he helped us with our luggages to get pass the construction site next to the hotel and up to the cab. We will stay here again the next time. If we are going to Winbledon again, we will remember to borrow the binoculars in the room to Wimbledon and check out the celebrities at the Royal Box. We forgot this time.

Cost aside, as I do not think it is relevant for this review, this was probably by far the best hotel experience we have ever had (we haven't put all hotel stays on TripAdvisor), which I think is saying something when we have travelled across the World, and live in Dubai. I will admit I had some reservations about staying at the Shard, due to its stature let's say. However, I cannot fault one single thing about our short stay. From the minute we arrived, to the moment we left, we were made to feel extremely welcome, nothing was too much trouble to any of staff we encountered during our 4-day stay. To be honest, I am shocked and surprised that people have left negative comments on Trip Advisor. The recent complaints I have read are pathetic to be honest. Tyrone (in particular), the staff at the Bar on Level 34, and the English Doorman (apologies for forgetting their names), were probably the most hospitable people we have ever come across during a hotel stay. The reservations team prior to and after making the booking were first class also. The view from our room (on Level 40) was breathtaking. The clear and sunny weather in London, certainly helped. The room itself was fantastic, and full of all mods cons, including a heated toilet seat. The binoculars in the room are a nice touch. Great toiletries, and a lovely little gift for my son when we arrived. The room size was more than sufficient and probably larger than most in central London. The Pool on Level 52 is definitely worth a visit, and the two timings daily for children to swim is more than sufficient. We experienced breakfast in-house on one day, and also room service, and no complaints at all. There are plenty of options within walking distance nearby for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and beverages of all types. The construction work next door, has no impact on your stay whatsoever, although it would have been nice to have been warned about it prior to the booking. Great location, great access to Public Transport and Borough Market, and the Vinegaryard, which I think will be a very popular place in the months to come.

The most enjoyable stay in our tour of Europe. From start to finish the experience was exceptional. The friendly doorman and his friends were very welcoming and attentive. Our room was a little late but in true customer service we were treated to the cocktails and nibbles at the bar on the top floor. Our room was large, clean and filled with light. The views over tower bridge, Tower of London and the Thames was phenomenal during the day but breathtaking at night. Even the small things like complimentary glass bottled water on a hot London day and the boxed binoculars for our 3 yr old to use just added to the outstanding experience. This was our return leg to London before boarding a long flight back home - so a chance to unwind for a few days. I must say that Shangri la has nailed the formula with this one.

We've never done the tourist thing in London so figured a great way to see it from above would be from a room in the Shangri-La hotel within the Shard. We'd normally go for Manderin Oriental, but whilst the hotels are always fantastic, the view would be just so so! We chose an Icon City View room, and it didn't disappoint! its a very large room, with a massive bed, large bathroom & fantastic views. The first room I've had that comes with binoculars and a viewing guide! Our room overlooked HMS Belfast, Tower bridge, Tower of london and a general view to the east to Docklands. Drinks in the bar is a must, and they have a policy of rotating people so everyone gets a window seat at some point. We had dinner in the ting restaurant one night and again it ticked all the boxes for taste and service. We also had dinner at the Ritz on the same trip and we both preferred Ting. If I were to be really picky, it's a shame the bathroom TV can't be seen from the bath, it's in the mirror above the sink, however sitting in the bath looking across London is difficult to beat so i suppose it works. Some of the views on the corner of the building are partially obscured by steel-work but it doesn't affect the overall impression. You can see into other rooms, although in our case we and our neighbours could only see each others seating areas. Once we'd figured it out it didn't bother us. I would recommend this hotel and it's location is only part of what makes it great!

Dear Braddy, Thank you so much for your brilliant feedback and lovely review! We are so glad you chose Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London for a change, and thrilled to hear we lived up (and even exceeded!) to your expectations. The views from the hotel are indeed mesmerizing, and you are absolutely right to say that our amazing location in the iconic building of The Shard, just south of the River, is certainly part of what makes our property a fantastic venue. Our Iconic City View Rooms are a great choice, with the 180 degrees views they offer of the city, and the comfortable space they come with, and we are so pleased you loved them! What a pleasure to read that you also enjoyed our fabulous Gong Bar and our beautiful Ting Restaurant. We will certainly thank all our colleagues for looking after you so well! We would also like to thank you for your constructive feedback about your experience, notably regarding the bathroom television and the view from the room. I have previously stayed twice at this hotel but on my most recent visit I just took my mother and son (neither of whom had been before) for drinks at Gong followed by dinner at Ting. I had carefully planned to see the sun get close to setting over our drinks and then night to fall while having dinner, with the glittering lightscape of London around us as it got dark. The views were great and the hotel absolutely delivered as well. Everywhere we went the staff were delightful: super-helpful and very keen to assist. With the singular and jaw-dropping views this hotel offers this is all the more surprising - you might expect the welcome to be less warm but this is not the case. Very professional, slick and totally worth its recent Forbes 5 star rating. And for any readers concerned about the location, take it from me (I live just 20 miles west of London) this is one of the most exciting and interesting parts of London to stay in and still easily accessible to the West End (traditional tourist haunt). Also if you cannot manage an overnight stay or dinner and want a treat, I have seen they do an amazing looking afternoon tea with great window views too. Highly recommended.
